End of 1st Quarter
|
The end of the 1st quarter is Thursday, November 5th. Check your student's schoolmax to get an idea of how they are performing and make sure there are no concerns to be addressed. If you have any concerns regarding your student's grade, please do not wait until the last day of the quarter to address it as it becomes more difficult to resolve issues as the quarter comes to a close. Contact the teacher to address your concerns and if it is not resolved, email your student's administrator. As a reminder, the 6th grade administrator is Mrs. Linnenkamp (jessica.lash@pgcps.org) and the 7th/8th grade administrator is Mr. Screven (james.screven@pgcps.org)

My Science Portfolio
|
Eight grade Life Science students created a website from Google as a platform where they will compile their work and what they learned from the subject for the school year 2020-2021.
Students learned cells and its organelles. The human body is composed of about 100 trillions of cells and with more than 200 types of cells ( https://news.ufl.edu/articles/2018/10/mapping-the-100-trillion-cells-that-make-up-your-body.html). Cells are the basic building blocks of all living things. Cells are classified into prokaryotic and eukaryotic cell. Prokaryotic cell is a cell without nucleus, while eukaryotic cell is a cell with distinct nucleus. Cells are also classified into unicellular and multicellular. Unicellular cell comprises of only one cell, while multicellular cell comprises of more than one cell. Cells have many parts, called organelles. Cell organelles are specialized structures that perform a specific function within the cell.
The pictures above feature some of students work and presentations.

Macromolecule Model Presentation
|
Biology students from University of Michigan presented their constructed model of common carbon molecules to highlight the relationship between structure and properties. The collage pictures above feature students' models and presentations.
Macromolecules are large molecules that are built from smaller organic molecules called monomers necessary for life. Macromolecules provide structural support, source of energy, store and retrieve genetic information, and speed up biochemical reactions. Carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, and nucleic acids are the four major classes of biological macromolecules or commonly called "biomolecules".
Building an understanding of models and their role in science helps students to construct and revise mental models of phenomena, which in turn, lead to a deeper understanding of science and enhanced scientific reasoning. Scientists use models to represent their current understanding of a system or parts of a system under study, to aid in the development of questions and explanations, and to communicate ideas to others.

OUR SCHOOL VOTES!
|
There’s a lot going on in the world right now and we all have a lot to say about it. The right to vote is a powerful freedom, and participation in free and fair elections is essential for a democratic society. It’s not about persuading others to vote one way or the other, it’s about encouraging as many eligible voters to vote as possible. Because a democracy cannot work effectively if its citizens don’t participate in the process. Put aside your differences for a moment in the name of championing democracy. We can agree to disagree on many things, but let’s at least agree on the importance of voting!
Election Day, is Tuesday, November 3rd. You can also vote early at one of Maryland's Early Voting locations: https://elections.maryland.gov/elections/2020/2020%20Early%20Voting%20Centers.pdf
Not Registered yet, visit: https://elections.maryland.gov/voter_registration/index.html
For information on where to vote, visit the Maryland Board of Elections site: https://elections.maryland.gov/index.html
Thank You,

CMIT Middle School Will Have Its Own PTO
|
At the October PTO Meeting a vote for CMIT Middle School to have its own, separate, Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) was taken to the floor. The vote was unanimous! As a result, the current PTO is moving forward with establishing the following:
1. Creation of a separate 501(c)(3) status
2. Request for EIN (Employer Identification Number)
3. Separate Bank Account for CMIT Middle School Funds
4. Creation of CMIT MS By-laws
These are the first steps to ensure that CMIT Middle School has viable and sound PTO in good standing that can support the specific efforts of the CMIT Middle School Community. Stay tune for more updates!
If you have questions and/or would like to assist with this endeavor, please contact Adriane Clark, MS Treasurer, at MSTreasurer@cmitnorthpto.org.
Thank You,

|
Are you considered a "SME" (Subject-matter expert) in your field or work? Do you have a passion for something that you think would benefit the parents of our CMIT Middle School Community? Do you like (or semi-like is good too) speaking VIRTUALLY in-front of an audience?
If you answered, YES to any of the questions below, would you consider being a speaker at the Fall's Parent Workshop?
The PTO is partnering with CMIT MS Administration on this year's VIRTUAL Parent Workshops., scheduled for Saturday, December 5th. This will be about a 3-4 hour workshop event for parents to get information and resources specific to Middle School Students. Here are some topic areas to help you decide:
1. Child Development

4. Educational Resources
5. Public Health & Safety
6. Diet and Nutrition
7. Mental Health

Spooktober Donation Drive was a Success!
|
What a great feeling to be able to give to those in need.
Thank YOU to all ALL of the CMIT Families that came out yesterday to donate non-perishables to those in our communities that struggle with hunger and trying to make ends meet. There is a quote by Maya Angelou that reads "I have found that among its other benefits, giving liberates the soul of the giver."
As I have said many times before, I am proud to be a member of this community......THANK YOU, again!
Thank You,

FAQs |
|
Q: Is CMIT North MS a public school?
A: Yes We are a public charter school who is staffed by PGCPS teachers and administration, and support staff who work along side of a limited CLF staff. We have access to PGCPS support but also benefit from additional guidance, management and financial support from Chesapeake Light House Foundation, whose educational concept this school is based on.
Q: Do siblings get preference in applying to CMIT?
A: The process of gaining entry to any charter school in Prince George's County is through a lottery. However, siblings of already attending CMIT students are weighted differently during the lottery process. This different weighting gives preference to siblings.
Q: What makes CMIT different then any other school in the district?
A: Although we are a PGCPS public charter, we are given some autonomy over curriculum. This autonomy allows us to fast track students, who are academically ready, through selected high school courses in math, foreign language, science and technology. It is that fast tracking that opens up opportunity to more advanced coursework on the college level while still in high school. Additionally, we offer students supports and enrichments to every student, not available at most schools. Lastly, we are a uniform school which takes away the distraction, the competition and the social stratification that is brought on by non uniform dress in a school.
Our test scores oustrip not only county averages but also state avaerages. This, along with other metrics has made us a 5 star school.
Q: Do you offer everything the big middle and high school's offer?
A: Unlike many school in Maryland, we do not have a full spectrum offerings in sports. Instead, our focus is on STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics). Therefore, our sports offerings are more limited. We offer, boys and girls soccer, basketball, girl's softball, boy's baseball and club lacrosse in the middle school. Additionally, boys and girls basketball, track/field and volleyball at the high school level. With that said we recently (2017) won the girls county basketball championship and made it to the playoffs in soccer. Our high school opened a multi-million dollar, state of the art gym complex, competitive with all schools of their size. The middle school has also added an indoor gym space. Lastly, we do offer special educational services, but becuase we are a school of choice, the amount of service hours we can provide is limited to 7.5 hours a week, split between literacy and math. Services hours are delivered by special education teachers but are limited to literacy and math courses.
