Important Upcoming Dates
|
Greetings CMIT Parents and Students,
As the June 2 primary election will be done mostly by mail, PGCPS requested a waiver from the state to change this mandated holiday to an instructional day. The waiver has been approved by the state, making the last days for students and teachers one day earlier (June 15 and June 17, respectively).
Last day of distance learning instruction is June 8th.
Due to the recent schedule change, all missing student work for the 4th quarter is now due by June 15 at 4pm.
I strongly encourage students to submit missing work as soon as possible to ensure teachers have ample time to enter grades into Schoolmax by June 17th. Do not wait until June 15th if possible.

TRAC Bridge Teams School Year 2019-2020 Rock Again!
|
CMIT TRAC Bridge Teams rock again this school year 2019-2020. They made the impossible possible. Congratulations to all of you! CMIT is proud of you. Thank you to everyone who supported, believed, and prayed for their success: from our administrators, teachers, CLF, MDOT, friends, especially their parents.
TRAC Bridge students and their teams for this school year were comprised of Oluwabusoye Okunuga (team captain), Emmanuel Ikeh, and Oreoluwa Adeyemo of Bridge Building Adversaries; Carolyn Silva (team captain) , Francarlo Sosa, Emnet Theodros, and Emely Castellanos of Bridge Legacies; Aimal Abid (team captain), Jehan Idsassi, Jasmyne Wilson, and Leila Ogba of Pont de Voie (PDV); Maranna Nwozo (team captain), Jescie Tinio, and Yashasri Gouda of Savvy Scholars; and Alexander Akinmutimi (team captain), Myles Mckell, Boris Sai-Palm, The Q.E.D’s (Quod Erat Demonstrandum).
The Competition:
The club was created to prepare students to compete in the "2020 TRAC Bridge Competition". This competition is designed to allow students the opportunity to develop a Truss Bridge that will be tested for strength-to-weight ratio. Student teams from grades 7 and 8 will be competing against other TRAC student teams from across the country.
The Problem:
The goal of this competition is to develop a Truss Bridge that will carry as much weight as possible while weighing as little as possible (strength-to-weight ratio). Each team is to research the bridge type, design and conduct experiments to test for strength-to-weight ratio, and then design a bridge resulting from those experiments. The teams are to construct a bridge made only with the materials provided in the TRAC Challenge Entry Kit. As a part of the Design Competition, the team is required to develop a report portfolio describing the design and testing of the bridge and create design drawings using Bentley PowerDraft CAD software. Each bridge will be checked for design according to the rules. The bridges will be weighed and strength tested during the competition to calculate strength-to-weight ratio.
The Challenge:
An engineer’s job is to not only design a safe bridge to carry required loads, but also to make sure that it is cost effective (least amount of materials used to achieve the desired load). To simulate this process, teams will use the following strength-to-weight ratio calculation to develop a bridge that carries a high load relative to the bridge weight. Strength to weight ratio is determined by dividing the maximum load carried by the weight of the bridge.
The teams started to work on researching, experimenting, designing and constructing the bridge. Finally, they end up writing a proposal where all their work was compiled in a portfolio.
The following are the summary of our teams' achievements, preparations, and congratulatory messages:

FAQs |
|
Q: Is CMIT North MS a public school?
A: Yes We are a public charter school who is staffed by PGCPS teachers and administration, and support staff who work along side of a limited CLF staff. We have access to PGCPS support but also benefit from additional guidance, management and financial support from Chesapeake Light House Foundation, whose educational concept this school is based on.
Q: Do siblings get preference in applying to CMIT?
A: The process of gaining entry to any charter school in Prince George's County is through a lottery. However, siblings of already attending CMIT students are weighted differently during the lottery process. This different weighting gives preference to siblings.
Q: What makes CMIT different then any other school in the district?
A: Although we are a PGCPS public charter, we are given some autonomy over curriculum. This autonomy allows us to fast track students, who are academically ready, through selected high school courses in math, foreign language, science and technology. It is that fast tracking that opens up opportunity to more advanced coursework on the college level while still in high school. Additionally, we offer students supports and enrichments to every student, not available at most schools. Lastly, we are a uniform school which takes away the distraction, the competition and the social stratification that is brought on by non uniform dress in a school.
Our test scores oustrip not only county averages but also state avaerages. This, along with other metrics has made us a 5 star school.
Q: Do you offer everything the big middle and high school's offer?
A: Unlike many school in Maryland, we do not have a full spectrum offerings in sports. Instead, our focus is on STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics). Therefore, our sports offerings are more limited. We offer, boys and girls soccer, basketball, girl's softball, boy's baseball and club lacrosse in the middle school. Additionally, boys and girls basketball, track/field and volleyball at the high school level. With that said we recently (2017) won the girls county basketball championship and made it to the playoffs in soccer. Our high school opened a multi-million dollar, state of the art gym complex, competitive with all schools of their size. The middle school has also added an indoor gym space. Lastly, we do offer special educational services, but becuase we are a school of choice, the amount of service hours we can provide is limited to 7.5 hours a week, split between literacy and math. Services hours are delivered by special education teachers but are limited to literacy and math courses.
