Calling all Artist, Creatives, and Entrepreneurs! We Need Your Creativity at CultureFEST!
Hello CLF Creatives & Entrepreneurs Many of you have experienced CultureFEST before, but this year it's going to be a little different. CultureFEST 2019 will highlight our students, parents, and teachers who enjoy creating! That’s right, we want our community to share/sell their arts and crafts at CultureFEST! This is a unique opportunity to showcase our communities’ artistic talents! Please encourage your students to sign up for a FREE vendor booth or showcase your own artworks. Our educators are the foundation of STEAM, they help to create well-rounded students and for that service, we will provide our teachers with FREE vendor booths at CultureFEST 2019! For our CLF Parents, we are offering booth spaces for the low price of $50 and $100 for any local businesses interested in participating! CultureFEST is an excellent opportunity to introduce your art, crafts, products, or business to all six (6) school communities! Your booth rental is treated as a charitable contribution towards CultureFEST 2020. Exhibit and invite your business network to CultureFEST! We have expanded the festival to provide more opportunities for our visual artist, but we haven’t forgotten about our performing artist! The CultureFEST main stage is the perfect place to perform if you are a dancer, rapper, singer, poet, musician, etc. The performing arts have been a staple at CultureFEST since the very beginning. Our community comes to CultureFEST to see our students and teachers perform! Share this with your young performers and peers. Let's shine a bright light on all of our CLF artists! Join us on Saturday, November 2nd! Fill out our CultureFEST Sign-Up sheet! https://forms.gle/pPpSsheNtfhpUnTi9 Share your skills & talents!

Mr. Conde RELA 7
Amazingly, we are half way through the first quarter. The progress report grades have been submitted and you should be receiving a printed progress report grade soon. As most of you may already know, the class grade is continually evolving and will continue to change until the end of the first quarter. If you wish to receive a more up-to-date report, please refer to your child's grade on SchoolMax. Students have written their Quarter One Narrative Task, which required for students to compose a sequel to the story "The Circuit" by Francisco Jimenez. Students next week will continue to study the quarter theme entitled "Facing Adversity." The students will view non-print text in the form of a video on the Dust Bowl era and they will read an excerpt from John Steinbeck's The Grapes of Wrath. Students will become acquainted the life of people living through the adverse times of the Great Depression and the severe drought suffered by Oklahoma farmers during the depression. Students should be making connections between the fictional characters and real-life individuals in all the selections we have studied: Aimee Mullins, Helen Keller, Panchito, and Wes Moore. Continue to examine how characters face and overcome adversity in their varied life experiences.

8th Grade Science Class in Action: Microscope Lab
"Micro" refers to tiny, "scope" refers to view or look at. Microscopes are tools used to enlarge images of small objects so as they can be studied. The compound light microscope is an instrument containing two lenses, which magnifies, and a variety of knobs to resolve (focus) the picture. Because it uses more than one lens, it is also called the compound microscope in addition to being referred to as being a light microscope. Eight grade students both from Life Science and Biology class performed microscope lab this week. They learned the microscope parts and function, proper use and handling of microscope. They also learned how to prepare a wet mount of the letter "e", and calculate the total magnification of the microscope under scanner, low power and high power objective. They had able to locate an object under the microscope where they had a chance to see the beauty of some sample plant and animal cells.

Big Win For Tiger's Softball
This past Monday The girl's softball team played against Dwight D. Eisenhower. With the score of 9-3, The CMIT Golden Tigers took the win. When Eisenhower got three home runs, CMIT came back harder with 9 home runs. Watching these girls practice and finally play has been incredible, with coach powers expecting nothing but perfection, these girls rose to the bar. The effort put in and support given by these player's parents is very impressive and says something about CMIT Tiger spirit. The girl's softball team has another game this Monday , located at Montpelier softball field (5:30 to 7:30). Please come out to show your support! Hailey Johnson , Student staff writer

FAQs

Q: Is CMIT North MS a public school?

A: Yes We are a public charter school who is staffed by PGCPS teachers and administration, along with CLF staff. We also benefit from additional guidance, management and financial support from Chesapeake Light House Foundation, whose educational concept this school is based on.

Q: Do siblings get preference in applying to CMIT?

A: The process of gaining entry to any charter school in Prince George's County is through a lottery. However, siblings of already attending CMIT students are weighted differently during the lottery process. This different weighting gives preference to siblings.

Q: What makes CMIT different then any other school in the district?

A: Although we are a PGCPS public charter, we are given some autonomy over curriculum. This autonomy allows us to fast track students, who are academically ready, through selected high school courses in math, foreign language and technology. It is that fast tracking that opens up opportunity to more advanced  coursework on the college level while still in high school.  Additionally, we offer students supports and enrichments to every student, not available at most schools.

Q: Do you offer everything the big middle and high schools offer?

A: Unlike many school in Maryland, we do not have a  full spectrum offerings in sports.  Instead, our focus is on STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics). Therefore, our sports offerings are more limited.  We offer, boys and girls soccer, basketball, boy's softball, boy's baseball,  boys and girls track/field at the high school. With that said we recently (2017) won the girls county basketball championship and made it to the playoffs in soccer. Our High school recently opened a multi-million dollar, state of the art gym complex. The middle school has also added an indoor gym space.  Lastly, we do offer special educational services, but becuase we are a school of choice, the amount of service hours we can provide is limited to 7.5 hours a week. Services hours are delivered by special education teachers but are limited to literacy and math courses.
