FROM THE PRINCIPAL'S OFFICE
Warm Weather and Uniform Reminders
The weather is finally beginning to warm up and this often means shedding layers of clothes worn all winter. As a reminder students are to wear the orange or blue CMIT polo and long solid khaki or dark blue pants. Girls may wear Skirts or skorts however, they must be khaki or dark blue and no shorter than knee length. Students can wear a stretchy headband that is a solid orange, black, white or blue only. An exception would be head gear that is worn for religious purposes. Nothing that is multicolored, ties or would be classified as a bandanna. Belts must be all black. Additionally, all black shoes are required for the exception of gym days. Additionally, on gym days students can wear the CMIT approved t shirt and approved CMIT dark blue shorts. No fanny packs, mini backpacks, or school backpacks are allowed to be worn around campus during class hours. A clutch purse or pencil pouch is allowed. If you have any uniform questions consult the CMIT Student Handbook.

UPCOMING EVENTS
Earth Day Fest 2019 Volunteer
The science teachers were busy preparing for the Earth Day Fest, which is scheduled on Friday, April 26, 2019. The Friday, just right after the spring break. This year’s theme is “Protect our Species”. We believe that all living things have an intrinsic value, and each plays a unique role in the complex web of life. During the celebration, we will have speakers from the Alice Ferguson Foundation who will educate us about Exploring Biodegradable Properties of Trash and Dorian W Janney, Senior NASA Earth Science Education and Communications Specialist who will describe how and why the Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) mission measures global rainfall. There will be exhibits and demonstrations to teach our students the importance of science on earth. Other events are Science Olympiad tournaments like elastic launch Glider and Bottle rocket and etc. We will also have science magic, which is actually the display of a scientific principle or concept but looks like magic. Some of the tricks are stunts from our science lessons, while others are tricks that have secrets based on scientific principles. We are hoping to have many fun-filled activities on this whole day event. We encourage parents and guardians to celebrate with us. Please click the link to sign up as a volunteer to help supervise students during one or more of these events https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1FNI6t_31jxAxAj4kaWW6_kgawV1WxhPjpe2i-q9-kDc/edit#responses

Character Education/Life-Skills --- Violence and the Media
SESSION GOAL: Upon returning from Spring Break, the entire 6th graders shall have their knowledge increased as well as made aware of how the media influences their perceptions about violence and to teach them how to check media presentations against reality. MAJOR OBJECTIVES: *Define media * Identify that the media influences behavior * Identify that homicides and other forms of violent behavior are not as common as people think * Identify that the media distort our ideas about violence * Identify that the media create attractive images as models for violent behavior * Identify the reason for media violence * Discuss violent imagery in games and music * Discuss the harmful effects of media violence * Discuss ways to resist media influence VOCABULARY: * Media * Role model INTRODUCTION: Television, movies, newspapers, music, music videos, video games, and computer software are powerful forces in our lives. They present images of attractive people acting in exciting, glamorous, and often violent ways. By learning to check these images against reality, they will be less likely to use them as models for their own behavior. POINTS to MAKE: * Seeing characters in movies, TV show, and other media smoke and drink can influence us to these behaviors are attractive and appropriate. * Homicides and other forms of violent behavior are not as common as many people think. * Popular characters are usually shown as powerful, respectful, and attractive to others, * The media influences us by creating attractive characters to identify with. They serve as our role models, the kind of people most of us would like to be. * Media characters show us ways to respond and interact. * I shall ask students what do they learn when they see their role models act violently..... * Violent role models teach that 'might' makes right that violence is the best way to get what you want, and that violence solves problems quickly and effectively. * Violence is popular * Movie and TV producers profit from showing violence. * Some video and computer games and some popular music present violent images which distort reality. * Many studies show that children who watch a great deal of media violence are more aggressive and violent, even when they grow up, than children who watch less. SUMMARY: *Violence is common, but not as common as many people think. * The media try to influence our ideas about the attractiveness and appropriateness of smoking, drinking, and violence. * Media role models can influence the way we behave. * Portraying violence is profitable for the media, but can have harmful consequences for viewers. * Reality checks can increase our resistances to media influence. 6th Grade Technology Updates
Hello Parents of the 6th grade technology students, In Technology class we are working on our Technology for Dummies Books. The series for Dummies Books is an extensive series of instructional/reference books which are intended to present non-intimidating guides for readers new to the various topics covered. The series has been a worldwide success with editions in numerous languages. The students are making the books so that they can leave a little piece of technology help behind for those that are technology deficient. Parents thank you for all of your tissue boxes and hand sanitizer. As the students are in the classroom and touching the computers, germs are easily passed. I appreciate all of your help. Have a Happy Spring Break!

Honors English 8 -- Mrs. Justsen
Welcome to Spring Break! We left for break on a tasty note, trying over 20 different "limited edition" flavors of snack foods! Yum (or yuck, in some cases)! Students read/analyzed food and drink reviews to gain an understanding of various styles and formats for review-writing, taste-tested all the flavorful snacks, and then wrote their own reviews of the foods they "enjoyed." Please ask your scholar to see the review and offer any feedback you feel would be useful -- we'll be posting them on the internet the week following Spring Break. Also following Spring Break, we'll be discussing Fahrenheit 451: Chapter 2. We took the Chapter 1 Quiz and had our whole-class Discussion in the past week. Grades for this (and feedback) are in SchoolMax. Students should annotate Fahrenheit 451 Chapter 2 over Spring Break (and those who want to get ahead and finish the book with Chapter 3). We are on our last set of vocabulary for the year -- please encourage your scholar to review the words for the entire year, with a special focus on our last set! Happy Spring Break!

FAQs

Q: Is CMIT North MS a public school?

A: Yes We are a public charter school who is staffed by PGCPS teachers and administration, along with CLF staff. We also benefit from additional guidance, management and financial support from Chesapeake Light House Foundation, whose educational concept this school is based on.

Q: Do siblings get preference in applying to CMIT?

A: The process of gaining entry to any charter school in Prince George's County is through a lottery. However, siblings of already attending CMIT students are weighted differently during the lottery process. This different weighting gives preference to siblings.

Q: What makes CMIT different then any other school in the district?

A: Although we are a PGCPS public charter, we are given some autonomy over curriculum. This autonomy allows us to fast track students, who are academically ready, through selected high school courses in math, foreign language and technology. It is that fast tracking that opens up opportunity to more advanced  coursework on the college level while still in high school.  Additionally, we offer students supports and enrichments to every student, not available at most schools.

Q: Do you offer everything the big middle and high schools offer?

A: Unlike many school in Maryland, we do not have a  full spectrum offerings in sports.  Instead, our focus is on STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics). Therefore, our sports offerings are more limited.  We offer, boys and girls soccer, basketball, boy's softball, boy's baseball,  boys and girls track/field at the high school. With that said we recently (2017) won the girls county basketball championship and made it to the playoffs in soccer. Our High school recently opened a multi-million dollar, state of the art gym complex. The middle school has also added an indoor gym space.  Lastly, we do offer special educational services, but becuase we are a school of choice, the amount of service hours we can provide is limited to 7.5 hours a week. Services hours are delivered by special education teachers but are limited to literacy and math courses.
