FROM THE PRINCIPAL'S OFFICE
New Member to the CMIT Team!
I am excited to introduce Mrs. Emmanuella Nhyirani (in-sure-on-ee) to the CMIT Family! Mrs. Nhyrini has accepted our open science position and will be teaching 6th grade science to NYU and 7th grade science to Tulane, Duke, Stevenson, Cornell, and Morgan State. Ms. Nhyirani comes to us from Tallahassee, Florida with experience teaching science in middle and high schools. She is excited to begin this chapter of her career with CMIT and has been preparing to meet your scholars. Ms. Nhyirani will be meeting with Ms. Lawal to get an analysis of where the students are so that instruction can continue with limited time lost. Please allow Ms. Nhyirani the first couple days to get to know the students and to establish classroom norms and procedures before diving into content. Our gratitude and thanks go to Ms. Lawal for maintaining rigor and learning in the classroom while we searched for a permanent teacher. Her efforts allowed us time to select the most qualified candidate for the position. Ms. Lawal will still be at CMIT as a substitute teacher and her email will remain active should you need to contact her. Feel free to contact administration if you have any questions or concerns as we make this transition. Ms. Nhyirani’s email is active and she can be reached at enhyirani@cmitacademy.org. Thank you for your continued support.

BREAKING NEWS
A Reflection of Joy – Science Olympiad, the CHAMPION!
As I watch the sun barely peeping out over the horizon, I drove to John Hopkins University for the STATE Science Olympiad Competition. My heart was full but, my mind was worried. I knew I had the Champions! When these scholars volunteer to participate in the upcoming science Olympiad, they showed me their ability and dedication. Working for long hours after school and on weekends, they entered the Regional competition against 52 schools and triumphed to secure a seat to enter on the STATE tournament. It’s fiercer! It’s stiffer! How can CMIT champions fare against these odds? “They did great!!!” They competed fearlessly winning 13 ribbons in six (6) Categories. Let’s congratulate and celebrate our Science Olympiad participants. Thank you for making CMIT proud again! March 30, 2019

See the World from below the Surface - CMIT at the National Aquarium
After a summer spent doing field studies on teacher’s orientation workshop, I was granted an all-access passport for the students to discovering the world's aquatic treasures. In March, we use this "passport" to send one hundred fifty (150) sixth graders to an interactive experience with 20,000 animals at the National Aquarium in Baltimore, Maryland. Students explore Maryland’s estuary and virtually traveled to the depts of the oceans and even experienced a live dolphin show. Thank you to the wonderful parents and teachers who supervised the students on this field trip.

Teacher Student Basketball Game
Fun was had by both teachers and students at the first annual Teacher-Student Basketball Game held March 29th at the CMIT High School gymnasium. The event was attended by many students and families alike. An amazing game was played by both sides with Micah Webb and Ms. Jessica Linnenkamp the unofficial MVP's for their respective teams. These kind of events highlight our desire to create a more family oriented school community and a stronger teacher student bond at CMIT. A special thanks to Ms Kiara Colston for all of her hard work and dedication in putting this event together. She is truly a valued member of our school.

FAQs

Q: Is CMIT North MS a public school?

A: Yes We are a public charter school who is staffed by PGCPS teachers and administration, along with CLF staff. We also benefit from additional guidance, management and financial support from Chesapeake Light House Foundation, whose educational concept this school is based on.

Q: Do siblings get preference in applying to CMIT?

A: The process of gaining entry to any charter school in Prince George's County is through a lottery. However, siblings of already attending CMIT students are weighted differently during the lottery process. This different weighting gives preference to siblings.

Q: What makes CMIT different then any other school in the district?

A: Although we are a PGCPS public charter, we are given some autonomy over curriculum. This autonomy allows us to fast track students, who are academically ready, through selected high school courses in math, foreign language and technology. It is that fast tracking that opens up opportunity to more advanced  coursework on the college level while still in high school.  Additionally, we offer students supports and enrichments to every student, not available at most schools.

Q: Do you offer everything the big middle and high schools offer?

A: Unlike many school in Maryland, we do not have a  full spectrum offerings in sports.  Instead, our focus is on STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics). Therefore, our sports offerings are more limited.  We offer, boys and girls soccer, basketball, boy's softball, boy's baseball,  boys and girls track/field at the high school. With that said we recently (2017) won the girls county basketball championship and made it to the playoffs in soccer. Our High school recently opened a multi-million dollar, state of the art gym complex. The middle school has also added an indoor gym space.  Lastly, we do offer special educational services, but becuase we are a school of choice, the amount of service hours we can provide is limited to 7.5 hours a week. Services hours are delivered by special education teachers but are limited to literacy and math courses.
