REGISTRATION FOR MAKERFEST IS OPEN!
Held on the first Saturday in May, this will be the 3rd Annual MakerFEST, CLF's yearly STEAM Festival celebrating our community's inner genius! CLF schools are now eight programs and six institutions across the State of Maryland serving over 3,200 students K-12! MakerFEST invites these students to participate with staff, parents and our wider CLF STEM community partners to feel encouraged to exhibit and enjoy all the day's inventions, artwork, personal projects, experiments, robots, wild creations, noble attempts, fine solutions to typical problems, and makers making so much more! CLF will also have volunteer opportunities available for anyone who wants to help build the best MakerFEST ever! To register for an exhibition space visit https://www.clfadvancedstudies.org/makerfest For volunteer opportunities visit https://goo.gl/forms/y1qs5zfo8OPOuRo92 This year, the first Saturday in May happens to coincide with May 4th, often celebrated by fans of the widely popular Star Wars franchise. We fundamentally feel obligated since astronomy, space exploration fit all too well into the MakerFEST concept, so Community Partnerships is also encouraging all exhibitors to share their project progress with @CLF_CLF on twitter or @ChesapeakeLighthouseFoundation on Facebook with the hashtag #MayTheFourthBuildWithYou. Until next update, May The Fourth Be With You!

CMIT Goes Back in Time
The 7th graders had a real treat when they got a chance to experience the sights and sounds of the medieval age at Medieval Times in Hanover, Maryland. Not only did the kids see a great show that included, jousting, lance throwing, a battle between knights, a falcon soaring only feet above their heads, but also have a wonderful meal. Experiences like this last a lifetime and the opportunity to see what life was like 800 years ago can be more impactful than reading about it in a textbook. Thanks to the parents who make these experiences happen by supporting these type of events at CMIT MS.

Stunning Retraction of County Policy
Parents and Students, It has come to light that the county has reversed its policy on Amusement park trips and therefore, Hershey Park is officially back on. This is counter to a recent newsletter article stating the opposite. Please be aware that Parents this year will have to sign both a waiver and a permission slip for their student to participate. We are currently in the planning stage and more information will follow. Thanks again for being part of our community and the best part of our day.

Advertising - Character Education/Life-Skills
Session Goal: The entire 6th grade classes of Character Education, are being empowered with the knowledge of awareness of the various techniques employed by advertisers to manipulate consumer behavior and how to resist the techniques. Major Objectives: * Discuss the purpose of advertising * Identify common advertising techniques * Identify and analyze various advertisements (alcohol) * Discuss alternative ways of responding to various ads Vocabulary: * Consumer * Manipulate * Deceptive * Target-Market * Lure Points to Make: * Advertisements may take several different forms. The most common forms are TV commercials, radio commercials, magazine ads, newspaper ads, and billboards. Advertising Techniques: * Celebrity Endorsement- Has a famous or well-known people (for example, movie stars or athletes) talk about how great the product is or even that they use it themselves. Creates the impression that the product must be good if the use it, and if you want to be like them you should use it too. * Voice of Authority: Has experts or authorities such as doctors or scientists (or actors playing the part of experts) talk about the effectiveness of products such as toothpaste or pain medicines. Since they are experts, advertisers count on the fact that consumers are likely to believe what they say about how well the products works. * Scientific Evidence: Presents facts and statistics from surveys supporting the effectiveness of particular products. This is often combined with the Voice Of Authority technique in an effect to make the ad even more convincing. Comparisons Test and Opinion Polls: Presents the results of consumers opinions polls or 'taste tests' involving direct comparisons of similar (competing) products. These ads are intended to show that more people like brand A than brand B, or that product X is stronger, safer, less expensive, etc than other similar products. Demonstrations: Intended to show how well a product works (usually under the most favorable conditions possible). Some of these demonstrations have been found to be rigged by advertisers to make the product look much better than it really is. Frequently used for household products (such as dishwashing soap, window cleaner, floor cleaners, stain-removers, dishwashers, vacuum cleaners, glue, etc.). Bandwagon Appeal: Intended to create the impression that everybody is using a particular product and because everybody is using it you should too. Romance/Sex Appeal: Users very attractive models in a way that implies that using the product will make the person using it more romantically or sexually attractive. Maturity/Sophistication Appeal: Intended to show that if you buy a certain product you will be more grown-up, sophisticated, and fashionable. Fun/Relaxation Appeal: Intended to sell a product by convincing you that it will help you to have more fun or feel more relaxed. Popularity Appeal: Intended to convince you to buy a certain product by implying that if you use it you will be more popular. * The Deal Appeal: Tries to create a sense of urgency and excitement by implying that this is a deal that is too good to pass up. Generally focuses on price and creates a sense of urgency by saying that the deal will end soon because the sale price is only good for a few days and/or there is only a limited supply of the product. Summary: * The purpose of advertising is to sell the product. *Many advertisers do not merely present the facts but frequently exaggerate the claims of their products in order to persuade people to buy them. * TV and radio commercials, billboards, magazines, and newspaper ads are common forms of advertising. * Many advertisers re o effective in manipulating us that often they make us want their products without our being aware of the fact that they have persuaded us. * There are alternative ways of responding to various ads (for cigarettes and alcoholic beverages) such as keeping in mind that advertisers are trying to manipulate individuals by creating the impression that smoking or drinking will somehow improve their lives. * In this lesson students have learned how to analyze advertisements, to identify common ad techniques, and to resist advertising pressure.

Sincerely, Dr. Sullivan-Williams, PH.D. (a.k.a. Dr.. BB) Senior Certified Life Skills/Character Education Instructor

FAQs

Q: Is CMIT North MS a public school?

A: Yes We are a public charter school who is staffed by PGCPS teachers and administration, along with CLF staff. We also benefit from additional guidance, management and financial support from Chesapeake Light House Foundation, whose educational concept this school is based on.

Q: Do siblings get preference in applying to CMIT?

A: The process of gaining entry to any charter school in Prince George's County is through a lottery. However, siblings of already attending CMIT students are weighted differently during the lottery process. This different weighting gives preference to siblings.

Q: What makes CMIT different then any other school in the district?

A: Although we are a PGCPS public charter, we are given some autonomy over curriculum. This autonomy allows us to fast track students, who are academically ready, through selected high school courses in math, foreign language and technology. It is that fast tracking that opens up opportunity to more advanced  coursework on the college level while still in high school.  Additionally, we offer students supports and enrichments to every student, not available at most schools.

Q: Do you offer everything the big middle and high schools offer?

A: Unlike many school in Maryland, we do not have a  full spectrum offerings in sports.  Instead, our focus is on STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics). Therefore, our sports offerings are more limited.  We offer, boys and girls soccer, basketball, boy's softball, boy's baseball,  boys and girls track/field at the high school. With that said we recently (2017) won the girls county basketball championship and made it to the playoffs in soccer. Our High school recently opened a multi-million dollar, state of the art gym complex. The middle school has also added an indoor gym space.  Lastly, we do offer special educational services, but becuase we are a school of choice, the amount of service hours we can provide is limited to 7.5 hours a week. Services hours are delivered by special education teachers but are limited to literacy and math courses.
