Teacher of the Month
|
Congratulations to Mr. Mackey, CMIT North Middle School's January Teacher of the Month!
Some students recently asked how teachers are selected for Teacher of the Month. When asked why , many of them responded that they would like to nominate Mr. Mackey. His students advocated for his nomination, which speaks volumes towards the respect, rapport, and learning that is occurring in his classroom. In their words, "He breaks down math concepts in a way students can understand. He is patient, makes jokes that helps them relate to him, and they respect him." Teachers also state that he is a great colleague with great advice for the classroom and for life.
CMIT is very fortunate to have Mr. Mackey as a part of the team and larger community. Thank you Mr. Mackey for being a great addition to our faculty and for building a culture of learning and teamwork within the CMIT.

Big Win for Stem Students!
|
Dear CMIT Family;
I am still deaf from the applause of the audience as Chesapeake Math and IT Academy Charter School North won one of the Grand Awards from the 71st Prince George’s AREA SCIENCE FAIR held Saturday, March 17th. Saloni Patel was awarded the Best Presentation winner and will compete at the 2019 STATE STEM FAIR on BROADCOM MASTERs of the Society of Science and the Public. This is a competition among 35 States of the United States of America.
It has been six weeks that I have been working with these three students, Lennert Bourne, Brigham Pletsch and Saloni Patel after they won the school wide competition. During every one of those days, a great winning spirit was observed. For me, they have already proven themselves to be champions. First, by each of these students being chosen among 175 students from their grade level. Second, then winning the top three positions among 150 students during the CMIT school wide competition. Lastly, to be chosen from among more than 1000 student from the district to compete with more than 400 students surely showcases their can do attitude.
And now, Saloni Patel was one of the grand winners from the junior division (grade 6 -8). She is one of the top winners who will go to the STATE competition representing not just Chesapeake Math and IT Academy, but Chesapeake Math and IT Academy, PGCPS, Maryland.
Truly Yours;
Dr Clarke

End of the Year Trip
|
Many students have been asking about our annual end of the year field trip, Hershey Park. Unfortunately, as of January 2019 we are no longer allowed to go to theme parks per the PGCPS Administrative Procedure on field trips. We know that many families plan for the trip financially as well as plan for the trip in their schedules. As of right now, we do not have another end of the year trip to replace this one but we will keep everyone updated.

Saloni Patel, Leonard Bourne & Brigham Pletsch goes to 71st PGASF
|
Please congratulate the following students who goes beyond the expectations to represent our school on the upcoming Regional STEM fair between three counties Calvert, Saint Mary’s, and Prince George’s on March 16, 2019.
Leonard (Lennert) Bourne (Grade 8 OHIO)
Project Title: Which building designs best withstand an earthquake?
Coach: Dr Clarke
Saloni Patel (Grade 6 NYU)
Project Title: By the Power of The Penny
Coach: Ms Lawal
Brigham Pletsch (Grade 6 James Madison)
Project Title: The Dolphone Project
Coach: Ms Butler
I would like to reiterate that the amount of work these students have vested on their projects made them the champions. The simple facts of difficulty, time, cost and materials spent by them were so excellent and admirable. To be chosen and be approved by the district instructional specialist from the tedious science research, is a prestige that CMIT family should be proud about.
Additionally, salute to the two wonderful and STEMazing science teachers, Ms Butler and Ms Lawal who were the coaches of Brigham and Saloni respectively. Both teachers went above and beyond of what is required of them.
The Prince George’s Area Science Fair (PGASF) 71st Annual Science Fair will be held at Charles H. Flowers High School, 10001 Ardwick-Ardmore Road, Springdale, Maryland 20774. Display and judging of all projects for students in grades 6-12 will begin March 16, 2019, from 8:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. The PGASF Exhibit Hall will be open to the public from 4:00 p.m. until 5:45 p.m. The event will close with an awards ceremony from 7:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. in the auditorium. Doors to the auditorium will open for guests at 6:15 p.m. and for student participants at 6:45 p.m.

3rd Quarter
|
The end of the 3rd quarter is very close! It officially ends on March 28th. Please check your student's schoolmax to get an idea of how they are performing and make sure there are no concerns to be addressed. If you have any concerns regarding your student's grade, please do not wait until the last day of the quarter to address it as it becomes more difficult to resolve issues as the quarter comes to a close. Please contact the teacher to address your concerns and if it is not resolved please email your student's administrator. As a reminder, the 6th grade administrator is Mrs. Linnenkamp (jlash@cmitacademy.org) and the 7th/8th grade administrator is Mr. Screven (jscreven@cmitacademy.org)

Science Olympiad 2019 on the way to STATE COMPETITION
|
It is gratifyingly overwhelming on how the Science Olympiad (ScieOly) team are mastering their test/lab and building events on the upcoming Science Olympiad on Saturday, March 30, 2019 which will be held at John Hopkins University, Baltimore MD.
These events are rigorous academic interscholastic competitions that consist of a series of different hands-on, interactive, challenging and inquiry-based events that are well balanced between the various disciplines of biology, earth science, environmental science, chemistry, physics, engineering and technology. The challenging and self-motivating events of the ScieOly align with the Maryland State Standards as well as the new Generation Science Standards. The events are designed to enhance and strengthen both science content and process skill.
Thank you to all the amazing coaches, Mrs. Natalie Crespo-Montano, Mrs. Sunkamni Lawal, Ms Cristina Cantrell, Mrs. Barbara Cabrera, Ms. Krystel Compton from PGCPS, Mr Hugh Clarke from USVI, Mrs Reynaldo Montano from MD and Mr Simper form University of Maryland.
To all our parents, I knock on your good heart to please continue to bring food for the students. It is very hard to master science concepts with an empty stomach.
Thank you for all that you do.

Experiencing Science in a fun setting is a way to light a fire of science-love in kids. Last Thursday, March 14, 2019, six gifted and intelligent scholars from CMIT academy demonstrate their understanding and love for Science and Math at the Maryland STEM - PI Day Festival. The Event took place in Room 170-180 of the House Office Building at 6 Bladen Street, Annapolis 21401. The audience is the State Legislators, their staff, a group of Annapolis Elementary School students, and a limited number of event guests. There were more than 200 attendees from around the state demonstrating what they learned in science classes. The program kicked off with a few speakers including the Lt. Governor.
The following students displayed their talents on building project that involves equations and science theories learned in class. They also unveiled projects from their science after-school program as well as different activities on how it is in CMIT science classes.

CMIT Prepares students to increase proficiency in STEM
|
The demands to increase proficiency in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) for all students set the philosophical shift of the Next Generation Science Standards which improve not only science education but also student achievement.
In line with this, CMIT curriculum concocts to prepare students the essential knowledge and understanding of science and engineering necessary to engage in public discussions on science-related issues, to be critical consumers of scientific information related to their everyday lives, and to become lifelong learners and global leaders.
The Grade 8 students were busy reviewing for MISA testing which will be administered on Tuesday and Wednesday, March 19 and 20, 2019. Potential essays, mock multiple test and listening & reading skills were prepared for the students so they will have an adequate review for the test.
All parents and guardians are requested to please support our scholars by completing the mock tests and other review materials on google classrooms.
All Grade 8 students are mandated to take Maryland Integrated Science Assessment (MISA). MISA is administered to all students in fifth grade, eighth grade, and high school every spring. The test replaces the former Maryland School Assessment (MSA) in science.

Kudos to All Parents and Guardians
|
Parents and Guardians
Thank you for all your efforts in making sure your student comes dressed in proper uniform items. We have had a marked decrease in uniform violations and that is a great thing. The uniform serves several functions. It shows pride in one's school and one's self. It decreases distractions and keeps the student's eye on the prize, which is great grades, great college and great pay. It levels the playing field, so that students aren't made to feel less about themselves because of not having the latest fashion trend. So, once again, thank you parents we take our hats are off to you. Keep up the great work.
Any questions about the uniform policy can be answered using the student handbook or you can address them directly to jscreven@cmitacademy.org

FAQs |
|
Q: Is CMIT North MS a public school?
A: Yes We are a public charter school who is staffed by PGCPS teachers and administration, along with CLF staff. We also benefit from additional guidance, management and financial support from Chesapeake Light House Foundation, whose educational concept this school is based on.
Q: Do siblings get preference in applying to CMIT?
A: The process of gaining entry to any charter school in Prince George's County is through a lottery. However, siblings of already attending CMIT students are weighted differently during the lottery process. This different weighting gives preference to siblings.
Q: What makes CMIT different then any other school in the district?
A: Although we are a PGCPS public charter, we are given some autonomy over curriculum. This autonomy allows us to fast track students, who are academically ready, through selected high school courses in math, foreign language and technology. It is that fast tracking that opens up opportunity to more advanced coursework on the college level while still in high school. Additionally, we offer students supports and enrichments to every student, not available at most schools.
Q: Do you offer everything the big middle and high schools offer?
A: Unlike many school in Maryland, we do not have a full spectrum offerings in sports. Instead, our focus is on STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics). Therefore, our sports offerings are more limited. We offer, boys and girls soccer, basketball, boy's softball, boy's baseball, boys and girls track/field at the high school. With that said we recently (2017) won the girls county basketball championship and made it to the playoffs in soccer. Our High school recently opened a multi-million dollar, state of the art gym complex. The middle school has also added an indoor gym space. Lastly, we do offer special educational services, but becuase we are a school of choice, the amount of service hours we can provide is limited to 7.5 hours a week. Services hours are delivered by special education teachers but are limited to literacy and math courses.
