Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration
|
Greetings CMIT Tiger Family!
This week, our CMIT Tigers participated in a Hispanic Heritage Month virtual event that included two wonderful guest speakers. The students started the day by reflecting on their own cultural identity. They answered the questions: Who are you? Who do you want to be? How do you want others to see you? After reflecting on their identities, students complete a Social Identity Wheel in which they explored parts of their identity that they think the most and the least about, that have had the greatest effect and least effect on their lives, and that they might want to learn more about.
Our first of our two phenomenal guest speakers was Dr. Jeannette Noltenius, president and founder of the Salvadoran Cultural Institute. She enlightened our school community about the Salvadoran people and culture--a segment of our society that accounts for the third largest Hispanic population in the United States. Our second guest speaker was a talented playwright from GALA Theatre, Cornelia Cody, who has written a great play entitled "La Llamada de Sylvia Méndez: Separate is Never Equal." Cornelia shared with the students the inspiration for one of her most recent plays being presented at GALA Theatre October 16, 17, 23 and 24. Even though we are not able to take our students on a field trip to see the play, I would encourage anyone interested in seeing a dramatization of a historical figure who played an important role in desegregating schools in the United States to visit GALA Theatre and view the live play.
I want to give a special thanks to the CMIT staff for being so accommodating during the Hispanic Heritage Month celebration. I truly appreciate all the hardwork and dedication by Ms. Colandrea, Mr. Bayram, Mr. McKinley, and Mr. Dorris for really helping to make this event the best it could be. Thank you students for attentively listening and learning about just a few aspects of the vast meaning that the phrase Hispanic Heritage truly has. I am humbled and thankful that at CMIT Academy North High, multiculturalism is valued, appreciated, and highlighted in all we do.
Go Tigers!

PGCPS Quarantine and Testing Policy
|
PGCPS updated their Quarantine and Testing Guidelines last week. If you did not receive the email, the information has been updated on the PGCPS website and can also be found below.
Guidelines-at-a-Glance
-Quarantine is required for (1) any individual who tests positive for COVID-19, (2) displays symptoms and (3) unvaccinated students and employees in close contact.
-Unvaccinated students and employees may return to school after seven days with a negative test and no symptoms. Proof of a negative PCR test on the fifth day of quarantine or later is required. Daily symptom monitoring by parents/guardians is required for 14 days after the initial exposure. Otherwise, they may return in 10 days without testing if they have no symptoms.
-Fully vaccinated students and employees without symptoms do not need to quarantine unless they test positive. They should get tested five days after exposure regardless of symptoms and wear a mask for 14 days.

Mrs. Crespo’s Science Class Updates!
|
In this Programmable Rover Gizmo, students learned the basics of coding using blocks and text, and that different blocks (or text snippets) make the rover perform different functions. First, they used simple code blocks to write programs. Next, they learned how these blocks translate into text code. Finally, they were able to write and optimize code to direct the rover to complete a series of challenging missions.
This experience is part of preparing our students in the conduct of their STEAM Fair project.

Hello CMIT Families,
The school year has started off great for most of the students. They are taking charge and ownership of their education in my class. Most have completed and submit their work on time in Google Classroom.
Grades are submitted by me on a weekly bases both on google classroom and schoolmax.
Please review grades with your student and have a dialogue to ensure they are on task and understanding the material. The students and I have had conversation on taking ownership of their education and being honest about their efforts, as it pertains to the results of their grades.
Next Units covered:
7th Tobacco
8th Safe Dating
Keep up the great work students, I am so proud of many of you that have matured and taking pride in your achievements.

Students Need Water Bottles
|
Please ensure that your student is coming to school each day with a reusable water bottle. There are water bottle filling stations throughout the school. With our bodies being made up of about 80% water, hydration is essential to the functions of our body systems.
Some of the side effects of dehydration are:
Low Energy
Mental Fog
Moodiness
Headaches
Constipation
Stomachaches
These are all issues that could impact a student's health and learning while in school. The school does have plastic water bottles to provide to students that may have forgotten their reusable water bottle for the day. However, we are a Green School and want to ensure that we are contributing to waste reduction.

FYI
|
|
This Monday, October 11th is Parent Teacher Meetings
|
Parent/Guardians
As you know this year's parent/teacher meetings will be virtual. That provides some unique challenges. One of these challenges is teachers being able to schedule every parent who wants to meet. Given restraints on time, classes have had limit the number of parents they can meet with. If you could not get an appointment we have two alternatives to reach out to teacher. One is via email. teachers can share any information a parent needs via email, Therefore contacting teacher's whose class you are concerned with will build a relationship with the teacher and get you the information you need. The other suggestion would be to email the teacher to make a meeting appointment. A meeting appointment with teacher or teachers must be virtual and would provide you more time than the allotted time for parent teacher conferences.

FAQs |
|
Q: Is CMIT North MS a public school?
A: Yes We are a public charter school who is staffed by PGCPS teachers and administration, and support staff who work along side of a limited CLF staff. We have access to PGCPS support but also benefit from additional guidance, management and financial support from Chesapeake Light House Foundation, whose educational concept this school is based on.
Q: Do siblings get preference in applying to CMIT?
A: The process of gaining entry to any charter school in Prince George's County is through a lottery. However, siblings of already attending CMIT students are weighted differently during the lottery process. This different weighting gives preference to siblings.
Q: What makes CMIT different then any other school in the district?
A: Although we are a PGCPS public charter, we are given some autonomy over curriculum. This autonomy allows us to fast track students, who are academically ready, through selected high school courses in math, foreign language, science and technology. It is that fast tracking that opens up opportunity to more advanced coursework on the college level while still in high school. Additionally, we offer students supports and enrichments to every student, not available at most schools. Lastly, we are a uniform school which takes away the distraction, the competition and the social stratification that is brought on by non uniform dress in a school.
Our test scores oustrip not only county averages but also state avaerages. This, along with other metrics has made us a 5 star school.
Q: Do you offer everything the big middle and high school's offer?
A: Unlike many school in Maryland, we do not have a full spectrum offerings in sports. Instead, our focus is on STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics). Therefore, our sports offerings are more limited. We offer, boys and girls soccer, basketball, girl's softball, boy's baseball and club lacrosse in the middle school. Additionally, boys and girls basketball, track/field and volleyball at the high school level. With that said we recently (2017) won the girls county basketball championship and made it to the playoffs in soccer. Our high school opened a multi-million dollar, state of the art gym complex, competitive with all schools of their size. The middle school has also added an indoor gym space. Lastly, we do offer special educational services, but becuase we are a school of choice, the amount of service hours we can provide is limited to 7.5 hours a week, split between literacy and math. Services hours are delivered by special education teachers but are limited to literacy and math courses.
