Arrival/Departure Routine
Please see the attached map of the driving routes and drop-off/pick-up locations. Please note: All parents, carpooling or individuals, must drop-off and pick-up in the rear of the building. The side parking lots are designated for high school overflow and commercial vans/buses only. Only students that ride on a commercial van or bus will be permitted to exit to the side parking lot.
Car Riders MUST be picked up in the rear of the building for their safety. We have personnel directing traffic to ensure the safety of our students. Please be patient and follow their directions.
Walkers must have permission to walk. You can give permission by completing the CMIT Academy North Middle School Dismissal Questionnaire: https://forms.gle/VmURiedh1iud4Lyf7. Walkers are expected to leave from our Front Office and follow the sidewalk to Swietzer Lane. Walkers should not be picked up at the intersection of Frost Place and Swietzer, nor be picked up on the side of the street. It is expected that Walkers are those needing to meet siblings at the High School, Elementary School, to meet parents at their place work along Swietzer Road, or live within 2 miles of the school.
The parking lots in front of Stantec, WSSC (including their overflow lot), and Konterra is not available to CMIT stakeholders for pick up. These are their places of business and we all need to be kind neighbors. Please do not park, wait, or drop students off in their parking lots. WSSC Police is surveilling the area and will issue citations.
As everyone becomes accustomed to the drop-off and pick-up routine the process will become more and more efficient. Typically by the third week all vehicles are gone within 10 minutes.
Please be patient and follow the instructions from those directing traffic. No one's time is more valuable than the safety of our children.

BREAKING NEWS

Tiger Time Updates
|
We all know that the pandemic, school closings, and distance learning has created learning gaps for many students. One strategy CMIT North Middle School is putting in place to address these gaps is weekly Tiger Time.
Tiger Time is a 1 hour block each Wednesday morning to allow students to focus on closing those gaps by learning and practicing required skills. The remainder of the day will have a modified schedule so students can still meet with their teachers to receive instruction and guidance.
Attendance is required and students must still report to school on time.
Students that may not have learning gaps will be able to use the time to complete assignments and extension activities to deepen their understanding of skills.
Our team has completed NWEA MAP testing in reading and math and the results are in. School-wide, 40% of CMIT North Middle School students are below grade level in reading and 57% are below grade level in math. These results were somewhat expected due to school closings and distance learning, however, they are still alarming. Individualized reports will be sent home to each family to see how their children were affected in the coming weeks.
At the next Tiger Time session, students will begin work in a program called IXL. This program provides pre-assessments and individualized practice activities to aid each student with their academic needs in reading and math. It also allows the teacher and administration to view real-time data for each student and measure progress.
IXL can be utilized from home! Once students have been introduced to IXL at school they will be able to complete additional practice and learning at home.
You can learn more about IXL at www.ixl.com

Dear Parents and Students,
I am excited to announce that I will lead a group of Chesapeake Math & It Academy students on a WorldStrides program to Kennedy Space Center, FL. On this once-in-a-lifetime adventure, students will experience incomparable learning moments while exploring the birthplace of U.S. space travel and some of our nation's most diverse marine ecosystems. This once-in-a-lifetime opportunity will inspire your child to think about the future, pursue goals, and create lifelong memories.
Your child will return home excited to tell you about:
- Feeling the thrill of blasting into space through a launch simulator at Kennedy Space Center
- Learning about the engineering behind roller coasters as you tour a Disney park
- Getting up close and personal with some of the unique wildlife found throughout Florida
I have chosen to travel with WorldStrides because of their exceptional service, their 50 years of experience, their safety record, and their preventive measures that ensure learning occurs in a safe and fun environment. I will chaperone the program with other teachers as needed, and throughout the program, our group will be guided by a WorldStrides-certified Course Leader 24 hours a day. Since this is not a school-sponsored trip, we will not be attending as representatives or employees of the school.
Please read through all the details of this letter, including a sample itinerary on the back of this page, and visit www.worldstrides.com/signup for more details about WorldStrides and our group's trip. BOTANY OR ENGINEERING? Growing Plants or Paper Bridge Challenge?
|
All students at CMIT North MS are required to complete a STEAM Fair project. This is a big opportunity for students to gain scientific attitudes and develop many skills like higher thinking, communication, and writing skills, think like a scientist, use problem-solving, build self confidence, and learn how to be independent.
Engineering and Botany are just two of the nine STEAM Fair categories. Eight grade students performed two activities this week to experience doing a project on engineering and botany.
First, students conducted an interactive activity on "Growing Plants" which simulates plant growth. Students can manipulate four variables: seed type (bean, tomato, or turnip), soil additives (compost and fertilizer), amount of water, and amount of light. Students can try to grow the biggest plants they can, or to investigate the effect of each variable individually. In this process, students gained experience in designing fair experiments and following an investigative process that includes asking questions, designing experiments, collecting and analyzing data, and drawing conclusions.
Second, students designed and constructed a bridge to hold as much weight as possible without the bridge collapsing in a limited amount of time and materials. Students tested the strength of their bridge by adding pennies/weights until it collapses. Strength to weight ratio was determined by dividing the maximum load carried by the weight of the bridge.

Introducing Mr. Stefano Patton, RELA Teacher
|
We are once again eager and happy to announce that Mr. Stefano Patton has joined our CMIT family as our newest RELA 7 teacher.
The son of military personnel, Stefano Patton had the pleasure of growing up in Southern California and in the South. Mr. Patton attended Hampton University, and obtained his B.A. in English — Creative Writing from Georgia State University in Atlanta. Bringing a patchwork of experience, from banking and marketing with Navy Federal Credit Union, to vast cultural exposure as a flight attendant with an American airline, to writing experience with an international publication, he is hoping to pull from his lived experiences to make his first year with the Chesapeake Math and IT community successful.

CMIT Uniform Shoe Policy
|
Parent/Guardians
Please be aware of the CMIT requirement of all students regarding shoes. Uniform shoes are to be all black including soles and logos. Black sneakers with white, grey or any other sole color will be considered out of uniform. This is also true of sneakers that have colored logos other than black. Therefore, sneakers that are black that have white soles and a white/or other color logo, for example, white/ other color than black Niki Swoosh or Adidas Stripes will be considered out of uniform. Please help us by complying with this uniform requirement. Starting the week of 10/4 notices will be sent out to parent/guardians if your child does not meet the uniform standard for shoes. Thank you for your help in making CMIT the best school in PGCPS.

FAQs |
|
Q: Is CMIT North MS a public school?
A: Yes We are a public charter school who is staffed by PGCPS teachers and administration, and support staff who work along side of a limited CLF staff. We have access to PGCPS support but also benefit from additional guidance, management and financial support from Chesapeake Light House Foundation, whose educational concept this school is based on.
Q: Do siblings get preference in applying to CMIT?
A: The process of gaining entry to any charter school in Prince George's County is through a lottery. However, siblings of already attending CMIT students are weighted differently during the lottery process. This different weighting gives preference to siblings.
Q: What makes CMIT different then any other school in the district?
A: Although we are a PGCPS public charter, we are given some autonomy over curriculum. This autonomy allows us to fast track students, who are academically ready, through selected high school courses in math, foreign language, science and technology. It is that fast tracking that opens up opportunity to more advanced coursework on the college level while still in high school. Additionally, we offer students supports and enrichments to every student, not available at most schools. Lastly, we are a uniform school which takes away the distraction, the competition and the social stratification that is brought on by non uniform dress in a school.
Our test scores oustrip not only county averages but also state avaerages. This, along with other metrics has made us a 5 star school.
Q: Do you offer everything the big middle and high school's offer?
A: Unlike many school in Maryland, we do not have a full spectrum offerings in sports. Instead, our focus is on STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics). Therefore, our sports offerings are more limited. We offer, boys and girls soccer, basketball, girl's softball, boy's baseball and club lacrosse in the middle school. Additionally, boys and girls basketball, track/field and volleyball at the high school level. With that said we recently (2017) won the girls county basketball championship and made it to the playoffs in soccer. Our high school opened a multi-million dollar, state of the art gym complex, competitive with all schools of their size. The middle school has also added an indoor gym space. Lastly, we do offer special educational services, but becuase we are a school of choice, the amount of service hours we can provide is limited to 7.5 hours a week, split between literacy and math. Services hours are delivered by special education teachers but are limited to literacy and math courses.
