COVID-19 Testing Consent Forms
|
Currently, any student or staff exhibiting symptoms of COVID-19, during the school day, can be tested using the Rapid and PCR testing in the school health room. In order for testing to be completed, a consent form must be signed by the parent listed in SchoolMax. Completed consent forms should be turned into the nurse or the front office. Consent forms are valid for the entire school year.
Starting Monday, September 27th, testing will be expanded to cover asymptomatic students. This testing will be completed by external vendors. The consent form for the symptomatic and asymptomatic testing are the same, so only one consent form is needed for each student. Approximately 10 percent of students with consent forms on file will be tested.

Proper Mask Wearing and Proper Social Distance
|
Parents, please discuss the importance of proper mask wearing and proper social distance with your students. In order to keep everyone healthy and safe, it is important for each student to follow the guidelines set for mask wearing and social distancing. Key talking points include:
The Do's and Don'ts of Wearing a Mask
DO
- Cover your mouth, nose and chin.
- Make sure your mask fits snugly around your face.
- Use the mask's straps or ties when putting on and removing it.
- Wash it after every wear. Mask can be washed with your other laundry, with regular detergent.
- Put used mask in a closed bin and wash your hands or use hand sanitizer after handling them.
DON'T
- Leave your mouth or nose exposed, or wear your mask around your chin or neck.
- Leave gaps between your face and the mask
- Touch the surface of your mask while wearing it. If you must touch it, wash your hands or use hand sanitizer before and after.
- Wear a mask that is damp.
- Remove the mask to speak with someone.
SOCIAL DISTANCING
- Students should be at least 3 feet apart in the classrooms and lunch rooms.
- Students should refrain from touching other students. This includes handshakes, hugging and any other activities that could cause students to be closer than 3 feet.

Zoom meeting on October 7th at 6:30 pm
|
Dear Parents and Students,
I am excited to announce that I will lead a group of Chesapeake Math & It Academy students on a WorldStrides program to Kennedy Space Center, FL. On this once-in-a-lifetime adventure, students will experience incomparable learning moments while exploring the birthplace of U.S. space travel and some of our nation's most diverse marine ecosystems. This once-in-a-lifetime opportunity will inspire your child to think about the future, pursue goals, and create lifelong memories.
Your child will return home excited to tell you about:
- Feeling the thrill of blasting into space through a launch simulator at Kennedy Space Center
- Learning about the engineering behind roller coasters as you tour a Disney park
- Getting up close and personal with some of the unique wildlife found throughout Florida
I have chosen to travel with WorldStrides because of their exceptional service, their 50 years of experience, their safety record, and their preventive measures that ensure learning occurs in a safe and fun environment. I will chaperone the program with other teachers as needed, and throughout the program, our group will be guided by a WorldStrides-certified Course Leader 24 hours a day. Since this is not a school-sponsored trip, we will not be attending as representatives or employees of the school.
Please read through all the details of this letter, including a sample itinerary on the back of this page, and visit www.worldstrides.com/signup for more details about WorldStrides and our group's trip. If you have any questions via esra.kocaslan@pgcps.org. There will be an online Zoom trip information meeting to discuss on October 7th at 6:30 pm.

SPANISH CLASS HEADPHONES
|
Hello CMIT family
Listening is one of the skills that we are trying to improve with the Spanish language. For that reason starting next week, regular headphones will be required for the spanish class. Students will need them when we do listening classwork independently.

Learning Scientific Method: Hands-On Lab vs Virtual Lab!
|
Eight grade students are learning Scientific Method as preparation for their STEAM Fair project. Students experienced both hands-on lab and virtual lab. In "Coin Lab", students used a dropper to put drops of water on the coins and counted how many drops each coin could hold before the water overflowed. They did several trials by varying the distance of the dropper to the coin, and speed of dropping the water. This hands-on lab aims to show how changes in procedures can cause changes in results.
On the other hand, in the "Effect of Environment on New Life Form" students determined how sunlight, water, and temperature affect the body type of a new life form. This virtual lab aims to let students: design and carry out controlled experiments to investigate how environmental variables affect a fictional life form and explain why a controlled experiment is necessary to determine which variables affect the results of an experiment.
Finally, students joined Google classroom STEAM FAIR. This classroom aims to focus on all communications and instructions regarding students' STEAM Fair project.

Good Mask Practices
|
Parents/Guardians
Did you know that a clean cloth mask increases the likelihood a child will continue using it. Additionally, the cleaner the mask, the more breathable and therefore the more likely the child will comply with wearing it. We urge all parents to regularly wash their child's cloth mask so that it is efficiently working to protect them from this terrible disease. Thank you.

CMIT Uniform Shoe Policy
|
Parent/Guardians
Please be aware of the CMIT requirement of all students regarding shoes. Uniform shoes are to be all black including soles and logos. Black sneakers with white, grey or any other sole color will be considered out of uniform. This is also true of sneakers that have colored logos other than black. Therefore, sneakers that are black that have white soles and a white/or other color logo, for example, white/ other color than black Niki Swoosh or Adidas Stripes will be considered out of uniform. Please help us by complying with this uniform requirement. Starting the week of 9/27 notices will be sent out to parent/guardians if your child does not meet the uniform standard for shoes. Thank you for your help in making CMIT the best school in PGCPS.

FAQs |
|
Q: Is CMIT North MS a public school?
A: Yes We are a public charter school who is staffed by PGCPS teachers and administration, and support staff who work along side of a limited CLF staff. We have access to PGCPS support but also benefit from additional guidance, management and financial support from Chesapeake Light House Foundation, whose educational concept this school is based on.
Q: Do siblings get preference in applying to CMIT?
A: The process of gaining entry to any charter school in Prince George's County is through a lottery. However, siblings of already attending CMIT students are weighted differently during the lottery process. This different weighting gives preference to siblings.
Q: What makes CMIT different then any other school in the district?
A: Although we are a PGCPS public charter, we are given some autonomy over curriculum. This autonomy allows us to fast track students, who are academically ready, through selected high school courses in math, foreign language, science and technology. It is that fast tracking that opens up opportunity to more advanced coursework on the college level while still in high school. Additionally, we offer students supports and enrichments to every student, not available at most schools. Lastly, we are a uniform school which takes away the distraction, the competition and the social stratification that is brought on by non uniform dress in a school.
Our test scores oustrip not only county averages but also state avaerages. This, along with other metrics has made us a 5 star school.
Q: Do you offer everything the big middle and high school's offer?
A: Unlike many school in Maryland, we do not have a full spectrum offerings in sports. Instead, our focus is on STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics). Therefore, our sports offerings are more limited. We offer, boys and girls soccer, basketball, girl's softball, boy's baseball and club lacrosse in the middle school. Additionally, boys and girls basketball, track/field and volleyball at the high school level. With that said we recently (2017) won the girls county basketball championship and made it to the playoffs in soccer. Our high school opened a multi-million dollar, state of the art gym complex, competitive with all schools of their size. The middle school has also added an indoor gym space. Lastly, we do offer special educational services, but becuase we are a school of choice, the amount of service hours we can provide is limited to 7.5 hours a week, split between literacy and math. Services hours are delivered by special education teachers but are limited to literacy and math courses.
