Dream Team? Looking for something different to do with your friends or classmates? Start talking with the ones you think might want to work with you on a big problem using math, and maybe win some money for school. Get commitments from three or four of them, grab a teacher willing to help, and then register online! https://siam.us3.list-manage.com/track/click?u=ab1736c99674e9e40595b9b8a&id=e9374e77a4&e=221ba07be6 Ready for this to be YOUR team? Read on for tips to ace M3 Challenge 2023! Registration is open for 2023 teams! In case you need a refresher: M3 Challenge is a free online math modeling competition for high school juniors, seniors, and sixth-form students. During Challenge weekend, teams spend 14 hours using the math modeling process to analyze, make predictions about, and provide insight into an open-ended, real-world problem. This year $100,000 (~£75,000) in scholarships will be given away! Are you up for the Challenge? https://siam.us3.list-manage.com/track/click?u=ab1736c99674e9e40595b9b8a&id=c8251bfa2d&e=221ba07be6 https://m3challenge.siam.org/participate What is Math Modeling? An abbreviated description of the process for newbies Mathematical modeling refers to the process of creating a mathematical representation of a real-world scenario to make a prediction or provide insight. There is a distinction between applying a formula and the actual creation of a mathematical relationship. Some graphical illustrations of the modeling process can be seen on this one-page flyer. https://m3challenge.siam.org/sites/default/files/uploads/What_is_Modelingflyer_3-19.pdf If you are interested in challenging yourself, get your group and please contact Ms. Keskin.

Advance Placement Exam Ordered
All AP exams were ordered from the College Board as of November 15, 2022. Our school is happy to announce that all Free and Reduced Meals (FARMS) students paid ZERO dollars. We also have an 8% significant increase in the number of students taking the test. Moreover, our school was able to be granted the request to have the following 7 students take the test without payment. These students have signified their interest to take the test but were reluctant in the beginning due to the cost of the exam. They then requested a fee waiver which was granted by the district. This proves that our admin listens to those who ask! AP teachers started reviewing classes and preparing our students for the exam. Strong results from our students are not just part of the student's college admission process but are valuable to show our school's commitment to high-quality education in a challenging curriculum that ensures success. TITLE: U.S. Department of Education Green Ribbon Schools This award is granted by the US Department of Education, through the Green Ribbon Schools program. Maryland currently (2022) has 1 nominee that has submitted. CMIT North HS would be among the first applicants at the Maryland State level. Our school is working diligently to submit the requirements and thesis Official Three Pillars: 1. Reduced Environmental Impact and Costs a. Reduced or eliminated greenhouse gas emissions, using an energy audit or emissions inventory and reduction plan, cost-effective energy efficiency improvements, conservation measures, and/or on-site renewable energy and/or purchase of green power; b. Improved water quality, efficiency, and conservation; c. Reduced solid and hazardous waste production through increased recycling, reduced consumption, and improved management, reduction, or elimination of hazardous waste; and d. Expanded use of alternative transportation, through active promotion of locally available, energy-efficient, and renewable energy options and implementation of alternative transportation supportive projects and policies. 2. Improved Health and Wellness a. High standards of Whole School Whole Community, Whole Child health, including health, nutrition, and outdoor physical education; health, counseling, and psychological services for both students and staff; family community involvement; and b. An integrated school environmental health program that considers occupant health and safety in all design, construction, renovation, operations, and maintenance of facilities and grounds. 3. Effective Environmental and Sustainability Education a. Interdisciplinary learning about the key relationships between dynamic environmental, energy, and human systems; b. Use of the environment and sustainability to develop STEM content knowledge and thinking skills to prepare graduates for the 21st-century technology-driven economy; and c. Development of civic engagement knowledge and skills and students’ application of such knowledge and skills to address sustainability and environmental issues in their community The nature of needing to collect the action data is a two-year program. We already laid the foundation for solid data collection from all the Green School and Flags Awards we received. We built our weather station and are in the progress of building the Solar clock and Aquaponics. We will be writing the completion of our thesis by January and hopefully submit it by February 01.2023 States generally submit their nominees to ED by February 1, annually. They set their own state-specific application deadlines to allow them time to review, select, and submit nominees to ED. The U.S. Secretary of Education announces national honorees on Earth Day, April 22, and honors them at a ceremony in Washington, DC in the summer or fall. States are encouraged to offer additional state recognition titles and events and to partner with the private sector to offer cash prizes, amplifying the impact of their award implementation. Details of what we have accomplished so far? Already a recipient of the Green Schools award under the Maryland Association for Environmental and Outdoor Education (MAEOE), approaching year three. Data from this should help satisfy Pillars 1 and 3 at least. Already a recipient of the Green Flag award as an Eco School under the National Wildlife USA, approaching year two. Data from this should help satisfy Pillars 2 and 3 at least. Composting initiative in the cafeteria. Data collected before, during, and after to measure impact will be a strong case for Pillars 2 and 3 Solar Panel out front capturing and storing solar energy for weather station (demonstrating solar capture and use for a school-wide asset). Pillar 1 & loosely, 3 Work in Progress: Aquaponics garden kit received by Awarded by Schimth Center to the Green School Club. Setting this up to run with Goldfish in the tank, growing lettuce up top, and having the grow light, LEDs, and pump running off battery power charged by solar panels is a demonstrative project at a small scale. Collab between Green Energy Generation Club, and Robotics Club for the educational piece to pillar 3. Pillar two possibility if we talk about sustainable aquaponics systems for growing food in both fish and vegetables (Scale up potential). Pillars 1, 2 and 3 Building the solar-powered clock in front of the school as a learning space for students and a community asset for Laurel. We sent a request to purchase our raw materials and as soon as we got the materials, the Green generation team and Robotic will start building the Solar clock. Pillars 2 and 3 Partnership: Alice Ferguson Schmitt center Earth Optimism Potential Crossover Programs we can attempt that tie into Green Ribbon or give us more Data https://www.healthygreenschools.org/

Caribou International Math Contest
Hello guys,  As I mentioned earlier, there was a conflict about Caribou Contest that could be taken on Wednesday, November 23, and Thursday, November 24 which are the Thanksgiving holiday. I sent an email to inform the Caribou Administrators. They replied that we could take the contest on Tuesday, November 22 at 1:30 am. I know there is early dismissal on that day, but this is what it is. So, if you are not on vacation on Tuesday, I am asking you to stay after school and join the contest. If you couldn't able to join, I understand.  Caribou International Math Contest Who can take it? Any students: 9 and 10 graders take Caribou-10, and 11 and 12 graders take Caribou-12. When? On Tuesday, November 22, 2022, at 1:30 pm  Where? In media center Resources: Website if you have an account (if you don't have an account, let me know): https://cariboutests.comCaribou  Admin Notes: Our next contest will be taking place from Wednesday, November 23rd, 2022 to Thursday, November 24th, 2022. The next interactive question will be MAZES which your students can practice now on our games page. This game is easy but it is useful to know the available tools that are available in the game to complete the maze quickly and have more time for other questions. If you or your students have any problems with the game, please let us know. We also will have a history question about Liu Hui. Please let your students know that they can read about him on our history page. Students who are going to participate for the first time in this Cup need to be given new access codes by me.
