Aquaponic - U.S. Department of Education, Green Ribbon Awards
This school year our school, CMIT north high school will be applying for the U.S. Department of Education, Green Ribbon (ED-GRS ) Awards. Our school will introduce aquaponics, composting, and green generation, e.g. solar clock/garden, as an array of programs to demonstrate their progress on sustainability. The ED-GRS recognition award is not a certification or benchmarking program, although nominees may use an array of other programs to demonstrate their progress toward the award’s three Pillars Recipients of the award are invited to a ceremony in Washington, D.C. where they receive a plaque; are the subject of media attention, and have their efforts celebrated. Other schools, in turn, learn from our practices. In addition to communicating school sustainability practices, the award uses a small number of honorees each year to share resources that all schools can employ through its Green Strides School Sustainability Resource Hub. Last Saturday, November 12, 2022, Mr. McKinley, our school's Green generation advisor, and Dr. Clarke, our STEM Program coordinator started the first move to this project by attending one of the most prestigious professional development through the University of Maryland Aquaponics Garden and the William S. Schmidt Center at the UMD campus. This course provides an introduction to aquaponics and user-friendly guidance on operating aquaponics systems and maximizing their educational potential.

TEACHERS UPDATES
Ms. Coholic's Science Classes
Greetings Parents and Students, Last week, Physics students performed an activity-lab on forces and torque using the heavy classroom doors and working in small groups. They discovered the importance of the relationship of 'level arm' distance and the force applied by hand placement. A homework packet that was due Friday, Nov. 11 was pushed to Monday, Nov. 14 due to students being on a field trip last Thursday. BioGeoChem students learned about Carbon-14 dating and calculating the age of fossils using a quick method of tracking radioactive half-life. The students also took a brief 10-point quiz demonstrating their understanding of how to multiply the number of half-lives by the number of years per half-life. This coming week, Physics students will continue with recitations involving the homework packet and practice problem sets in order to prepare for upcoming assessment (TBD). BioGeoChem students will be investigating planetary motion and gravitation. Have a great week!
