BREAKING NEWS
The Green Flag Raising Ceremony
What is a small, mighty club that emerges into a beautiful and strong pillar, and made it happen to fly the Green Flag in CMIT? The joyous occasion on Friday, September 16, 2022 proved that CMIT students are strong and competent leaders in our community and the nation. Chesapeake Math & IT Academy North was recognized by the National Wildlife Federation’s (NWF) Eco-Schools USA program for exceptional achievement in educating for sustainability, and improving the environmental footprint of the school grounds, facility, and curriculum. It is the 15th school so honored in Maryland, and the 5th in Prince George’s County, and currently serving as the only one active certification, to receive the prestigious Green Flag, the Eco-Schools highest honor. We aren't just a certified Green School, but we're co-certified with MAEOE and NWF. We were also the 3rd in the county to earn the bronze and silver awards, respectively. This school year 2022-2023, our four main projects include creating a “Certified Schoolyard Habitat” garden, partnering with PGCPS for compost, creating murals in the Cafeteria, and joining the Green School conference to gear up students' applications for college environmental scholarships and summer internship. https://greenschoolsconference.org/

THE EMERGING STRING CLUB
Hello all, we are excited to announce the start of String Club (Formerly known as Ukulele Club)! As a group, we will be learning and building new and upon already existing skills in order to enhance our musical abilities. We will be a mainly string-based group, but all are welcome to join! The songs that we will focus on will be based on the preferences of those who join us. We hope to use our time together to rehearse in preparation for future performances at events so that everyone (including ourselves) may enjoy the experience. Students will also have the opportunity to showcase their progress through things like newsletters and school-hosted events. We also plan to hold fundraising events along with other occasions to raise money for our club to acquire more instruments for anyone to play. The String Club will be a safe environment for anyone of any skill level to love and share with peers. We will be meeting every Friday from 3:10-4:30. If you don't have an instrument, we can meet to discuss how we can get you one if you're interested :). If you have any further questions, feel free to ask me (jescie.tinio2024@cmitacademy.org) or our other peer leader who will be working with us (jasmyne.wilson@cmitacademy.org). We hope to see you at our club expo this Saturday, September 24, 2022 from 9am to 1 pm!

CMIT ORCHESTRA/CONCERT BAND CLUB RECRUITMENT on Saturday, September 24, 2022
ORCHESTRA/CONCERT CLUB Come out to CMIT's ANNUAL Club RECRUITMENT on Saturday, SEPTEMBER 24, 2022. I will be available to provide information about the Orchestra/Concert Band this Saturday from 10 am to 1 pm at the School Gym. You can find more information about the Orchestra/Concert Band Club below. What Is The Purpose Of The Club/Enrichment/Program? Many of our students at CMIT have performed in an Orchestra/Concert Band in the past but do not have the opportunity to perform while in High School. Many of our students have NEVER performed in an Orchestra/Concert Band setting but would love to have that opportunity. The purpose of the Orchestra/Concert Band club is to provide the students the opportunity to perform in an orchestra on woodwind, brass, strings and percussion instruments while attending CMIT Academy HS North. The club will also provide students an opportunity to play at school events or concerts. The Benefits of students joining the Orchestra: a. Help cognitive development. b. Provides opportunities for socialization. c. Supports efficient brain processing. d. Encourages self-expression. e. Lowers stress levels. Other benefits included eye-hand coordination as well as increased cognitive skills such as concentration and visual recognition. Studies indicate that this tends to give kids who participate in orchestra programs higher success in other learning areas like math and reading. CLUB DESCRIPTION: The Orchestra/Concert Band will consist of students who have a basic knowledge of their instruments. If you do not play an instrument but are still interested in joining the the club, it is recommended (but not required) to obtain a private teacher. Students will perform on woodwind instruments, brass instruments and percussion instruments as well as violin, viola, cello, or double bass. Students are highly encouraged to rent an instrument from a local music shop if they do not have one available. A broad range of musical styles will be explored throughout the year, and instruction as well focus on proper instrument positioning and posture, basic sound production, and reading notes in the basic keys (D, G, C, A, F, Bb, and Eb major keys). Students in the Orchestra/Concert Band will perform one - two public concerts each year. Most students need to practice outside of class time for a minimum of 10 -15 minutes per day to show proficiency in this club. The benefit this club could provide to the CMIT community is to have a Concert Band/Orchestra available to perform at your school function. GOALS: The Orchestra/Concert Band Club will provide students with the experience of Music Making, Literacy in Music, Making Connections, Community and Cultural involvement and Careers and Lifelong Learning by preparing students for successful performances through rehearsal, discussion and analysis of the modern and classical repertoire. In addition, the club will provide students an opportunity to play at school events or concerts. REQUIREMENTS TO JOIN THE CLUB? The only requirement is to own an instrument and have basic instrumental technique. Beginners are welcome if willing to learn. Students are highly encouraged to rent an instrument from a local music shop if they do not have one available. CLUB SPONSOR: Russell Carter rcarter@cmitacademy.org

Student Parking Issue
Greetings CMIT Parents and Scholars! Unfortunately we are in danger of losing our access to the parking lot for our student drivers. We do not own the student parking lot and our neighbors have graciously allowed CMIT students to park in the lot. The owners have complained that several students are parking in spaces that are not labelled as CMIT parking spaces. In addition, students are hanging out, blocking traffic, and throwing trash on the ground. Please note: Cars will be towed if they are parked in non-CMIT spaces. Students may only park in designated approved spaces. Thanks so much for following our parking procedures!

Take care, Dr. Gaskins CMIT Assistant Principal

MOCK TRIAL IS BACK AND BETTER THAN EVER!
Are you curious about true crime and how to find out the truth behind real criminal cases? Mock Trial specializes in the enactment of a criminal trial that will hopefully uncover the causes and motivations behind famous crimes . Students will study evidence and testimony in court cases to put together a case or a defense, and then they execute that trial strategy against an opposing school that has also prepared the case. Winning teams advance through their circuit to regional and state finals. If you're interested in participating in the Spring competitions come to mock trial team meetings, every other wednesday, starting this Wednesday, September 21, in 211 or check out the mock trial table at club recruitment on Saturday, September 24 in CMIT North Gym.

Meet Team Illusion
This saturday, the 24th of September, we will be participating in club recruitment at the school. Team Illusion is working on competing in four events. Seaperch competition that takes place in the spring at the Naval Academy. Students build a remotely operated underwater vehicle and maneuver it through a series of obsacles in the actual test faciities at the academy. Vex competes locally at different schools. Students are given a problem to solve and must used specific components to build a vehicle that is both remotely controlled and capable of autonomous operation on a 12 foot by 12 foot arena. The vehicles must fit in an 18" cube at the beginning of competition. FRC competitions take place on a larger field, 27 feet wide by 54 feet long. Vehicles are required to be no more than 120" around and 48" high at the beginning of the game. This competition takes place with three teams on each side in two alliances. There is a lot more freedom for the students in how they attempt to solve the problems presented to them. The Solar Car Challenge involves a full-sized car designed and built by students on a 1,200 mile road race. The race takes place in Texas and adjoining states over a two week period in July. These programs are intended to help students develop into good team members and leaders.
