CMIT, A RECEPIENT FOR BRONZE AWARD
|
Please take pride in our latest achievement as an Eco-Schools USA Bronze Awardee. I am very proud to announce that we are 75% closer to our Green Flag Award.
Eco-Schools USA Is an international accreditation that has acknowledged and applauded young people's environmental achievements for almost 25 years. Applying for an Eco-Schools Green Flag is a fantastic way to acknowledge, reward, and celebrate the environmental achievements of young people. It shows that our student's efforts are appreciated, and it provides them the confidence and motivation to continue actively engaged in environmental issues in the present and future. It motivates the next generation of environmentalists and demonstrates to the community that our school is proactive in environmental conservation.

The Denney House Ocular Visit at CMIT for the First Pollinator Garden
|
The Denney House (TDH) was at CMIT last Friday, April 1st, for an ocular visit to CMIT's pollinator garden. The Green Schools and Robotics students will be assisted by TDH in creating and putting up CMIT gardens that are sustainable, such as solar and aquaponics. This is their four, seven, and twelve years project proposal. The first model for the solar garden will be available in 3D by April 29th, during the Earth Day celebration. TDH has a partnership with the Prince George's County government, which uses the County Circuit Courts to target truant youth. TDH and the Department of Public Works and Transportation (DPW & T) are also responsible for beautifying the county's 80+ ponds.
The world today is fast-paced and technologically dependent. Students, for example, are prone to overlooking Mother Nature's beauty and soul. Most children and teens spend their days glued to their devices, both at school and outside of it. It is for this reason why school gardens are so vital.

GWU x SNZ Biomechanics Summer Program 2022
|
Dear Juniors,
We are running two week-long in-person bioinspired engineering summer programs supported by a Navy grant in partnership with the Smithsonian National Zoo. All necessary information can be found below and in the attached flyer.
We are seeking bright, engaged, and curious students to participate in a weeklong immersion into bioinspired engineering through independent, mentored research projects. Students will learn principles of bioinspired design, engineering laboratory techniques and measurement tools, creative problem solving, data analysis, and technical communication skills. At the beginning of the week, students will visit the SNZ to meet with curators and keepers to determine an animal of interest and relevant research questions. Throughout the rest of the week at GWU, students, working as a team, will design an experiment to answer their research question, perform data analysis and prepare technical writing on their findings. Finally, they will craft an infographic to be displayed at the SNZ for the general public based on the project.
To apply, the student must be a current junior in a DMV (DC-MD-VA) area high school, at least 16 years old by the time the program starts, and able to get to and from GWU each day.
Applications are open now and are due on April 15th, qualifying students can apply using this link:

Important Announcement: MCAP Review and Mock Tests
|
Starting April 19 (after Spring Break), the Algebra 1 Team will conduct an Intensive Review on Maryland Comprehensive Assessment Program (MCAP) every day during class time until May 10. Algebra classes will use MCAP Algebra 1 Reviewers produced by respective Math teachers during class time. Student's are highly advised to come to Saturday Reviews. The English Department will hold MCAP practice the week before the exam during their classes as well. English extra tutoring (just dedicated to MCAP) will be provided on Mondays and Tuesdays from 4:30-5:30PM, starting April 19. Instructions of the review will be sent to parents and students before Spring break.
The Tutoring and Academic services highly urged parents to support the students to attend the review so they will take the test seriously. Mock Test helps develop proper time management and also relieve student's anxiety that is the most crucial part of taking any examination.
The Maryland Comprehensive Assessment Program (MCAP) assessments of Maryland College and Career Ready Standards (MCCRS) provide a road to college and career preparedness for students in grades 9 and 10.
Parents, please register your students using the link for Saturday MCAP Mock Test.

Team Illusion Competes in Seaperch at Naval Academy
|
There was a time when iron men went down to the sea in wooden ships. This weekend we relived a little of that. Not iron men of course, but Team Illusion. Not wooden ships, though we did see a model of the USS Constitution in Rickhover Hall along with a tiny satellite, but our own hand made boat of PVC, film cases, a couple of motors and some tape and zip ties.
In room R48, where the students at the naval academy practice piloting boats in long tanks of water, Alex Akinmutimi piloted our craft, picking up rings from the bottom of a deep pool and doing timed runs. We did not win, but we had a great time. Here is a video of the practice runs, https://drive.google.com/file/d/1ShKd4JMvySoeiMHyJG5Si5BkfQOOS1cU/view?usp=sharing . We would have filmed the match, but only the drivers were allowed near the large tank.
