CMIT'S Saturday Academy Special Presentation of Health Informatics with John Hopkins University and Dr. Christopher Chute
On February 12, 2022, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., Dr. Christopher Chute, Bloomberg Distinguished Professor of Health Informatics at John Hopkins University, presented one of the most essential and effective lectures on health informatics and COVID-19 to the CMIT Saturday Academy. Participants were given up-to-date COVID-19 medical data in order to estimate population-level changes and find predictors, treatments, and mitigations. This is CMIT's unique Saturday Academy session on current events that is great for students' critical thinking, forecasting what will happen and providing their opinion on a topic that helped them gain a better understanding of the issue or occurrence of the issue. With 70 participants, 62 of them stayed on task. Meticulous questions were answered and students displayed how they look. COViD 19, in Health Informatics, is a great way to offer ideal opportunities for cooperative-group instruction on a Saturday morning.

Forensics Mock Trial Team for their great achievement!
Congratulations to the CMIT Forensics Mock Trial. CMIT is truly proud of your advancing to the "first round of the Circuit 7 Championships," Knowing that this is the first time in this competition, and wasn't even given a coach-lawyer from the district. yet managed to be in the top 12 among 45 high schools in Maryland. To our loving and ever-supportive parents, CMIT is truly grateful for the trust and support rendered to the team, especially on Wednesday evenings when they have to stay in school until 8:30 in the evening and on Tuesdays and Thursdays, virtually from 6:30 to 7:30 pm for their practice.

ANNOUNCEMENTS
Diving into Quarter 3!
Dear Parents, Guarians, Students and Colleagues - As we prepare to dive into Quarter three more fully, here's a brief update on where we've been and where we're going: - In week 22, -- 9th graders completed the Benchmark #2 --10th graders have collaborated to select "1984" as their Quarter 3 choice novel and have designed a recurring schedule of weekly and quarterly assignments and assessments. - In week 23, --9th graders will collaborate to develop their own cycle of recurring assignments and assessments for the Quarter 3 novel "To Kill A Mockingbird." --- Just a heads up - we're going to start this novel in Week 24, and at the outset we'll establish norms for how we'll handle the topic of racism and its treatment in the novel. You can help put your student ahead of this curve by talking with them ahead of time to help them frame their ideas about the Jim Crow era and the impacts of racism in our history. -- 10th graders will complete the Benchmark #2 - We're rolling out iPads in the classroom. --We've been very lucky to receive Ms. Oz's support to pilot an iPad program in class, and we'll be training the students on this device in weeks 23 and 24. -- As a brief aside, for anyone interested in a brief review of a headline article advocating for more "traditional" - that is, paper and pencil style learning - here's interesting reading: https://cpb-us-w2.wpmucdn.com/sites.udel.edu/dist/6/132/files/2010/11/Psychological-Science-2014-Mueller-0956797614524581-1u0h0yu.pdf If your student has a personal iPad, which is also equipped with a stylus, AND is interested in using this tool in class, please reach out to me directly to confirm system requirements and grant permission to install a managed profile on the device. These devices are provisionally approved for use in Mr. Bevard’s classroom only.

All the Best! Mr. Bevard, MA English 9 & 10 CMIT Academy

Tiger Gaming - Nintendo and League of Legends players to Attend Tuesday 2/15
Hello All, Nintendo and League of Legends players will attend Tiger Gaming club this Tuesday, 2/15, from 3-4 PM in room 222. THIS IS A VERY IMPORTANT MEETING FOR ANY MEMBERS INTERESTED IN PLAYING IN THE PLAY VS. SPRING SEASON. If you are interested in playing on our Smash Bros. or League of Legends Play Vs. team for the spring season please be sure to stop by even if it is only for the first 15 minutes (if you have other commitments). The Play Vs. season starts the following week, beginning the week of February 21st, so we need to discuss where we are at and what options we have if PGCPS IT does not whitelist our games in time. So please be sure to attend if you are even minorly interested in playing in Play Vs. Spring Season. For our other members please review the Google Form sent your email by our very own Walter Railey about other, more casual Tiger Gaming opportunities in Tiger Gaming. Walter is trying to expand our game list and get some fun random game tournaments going that sound really fun. Additionally, Walter and Niyah Belton have brought to our attendance an opportunity to participate in a Smash Bros interest meeting and tournament at Randolph College on Saturday 2/19 from 12-4 PM. Being in Lynchburg, VA it is not necessarily a short drive, but I wanted to provide the details anyway, you can find a link with details below. https://admission.randolphcollege.edu/register/smashbros?utm_term=fall_2022&utm_content=09_app_gen22&utm_source=slate&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=app_gen_2022 Look forward to seeing our LoL and Nintendo players on Tuesday!

Team Illusion VEX Robotics Competition
Team Illusion participated VEX Robotics Competition on Saturday 2/12/22. We won 3 matches out of 6 and ranked 11th among 17 teams. The matches were tough. Robots literally fought each other to grab the mobile goals to their zones. Team members had limited time to complete the robot because of the school closure due to the pandemic. Last week, they worked hard to get it ready for the competition day. It was a great experience and lots of excitement and fun. VEX Robotics Competition Tipping Point is played on a 12’x12’ square field. Two (2) Alliances – one (1) “red” and one (1) “blue” – composed of two (2) Teams each, compete in matches consisting of a fifteen (15) second Autonomous Period, followed by a one minute and forty-five second (1:45) Driver Controlled Period. The object of the game is to attain a higher score than the opposing Alliance by Scoring Rings, moving Mobile Goals to Alliance Zones, and by Elevating on Platforms at the end of a Match.

Student Government Association Leadership Retreat!
The SGA Officers spent Saturday, February 12th at a the leadership retreat led by advisors Mr. Mirza and Ms. O'Donnell. They participated in team building activities, shared leadership skills and had an opportunity to talk to Mr. David Murray, Board of Education Representative for District 1 (our rep). They asked Mr. Murray how to use their voices in advocacy for students, as well as heard about upcoming issues facing education today. It was an amazing day. We can't wait to see them grow and take what they learned at a the retreat to make a difference at CMIT. Great job!!

Elephant Toothpaste Experiment and Bike Frame Design Challenge
Chemistry Honors students experienced Elephant Toothpaste Experiment this week. It is a fun experiment of decomposing hydrogen peroxide into water and oxygen gas. The experiment demonstrates the redox reaction, exothermic reaction and usage of catalyst. On the other hand, students designed bike frame from limited resources with respect to given criteria and constraints. They sketched their design, created the prototype and tested. They practiced the engineering design process and learned about material properties and strength of bonds.
