CMIT North HS is Proud to Accept College Board's Female Diversity Award for AP Computer Science Principles!
|
CMIT North High School has earned the College Board's AP® Computer Science Female Diversity Award for expanding young women's access to AP Computer Science Principles. This award acknowledges 1,020 schools for their work toward equal gender representation during the 2020-21 school year. Our school is one of only 760 schools to be recognized for achieving this important result in AP CSP. This honor recognizes the outstanding work our school is doing to engage more female students in computer science.
Research shows that female students who take AP computer science are more likely to major in computer science in college compared to female students of similar background and academic preparation who didn't take AP computer science courses. Through our leadership in diversifying computer science education, we're preparing our female students for the high-paying, in-demand jobs of the future and giving them the opportunity to help solve some of society's most challenging problems.
We’re honored that our school earned this distinction and look forward to seeing these young women and others pursue and achieve success in computer science education and careers.

CMIT-Prince Georges' Forensic Mock Trial Wins over St. Charles High School
|
Congratulations to the CMIT-Prince Georges' Forensic Mock Trial. They won on Wednesday, January 19, 2022, at CMIT over St. Charles High School.
I could never be prouder when Judge Kim of Circuit 7 Court announced that Leah Brooks was the best defense attorney in the competition.
While Genesis Edwards and Rachel Salazar were persuasive and were the best witnesses, Lastly, Phoebe Brown was quoted as the eloquent speaker of the night.
The Mock Trial in Forensic Science program objectives are to (1) further understanding of the law, court procedures, and the legal system; (2) increase proficiency in soft skills such as listening, speaking, reading, and reasoning; and (3) heighten appreciation for academic studies as well as career awareness of law-related professions. A Mock trial is "not" a dramatic play, a speech competition, a debate, or a game, though it incorporates facets of all four. Successful mock trial participants possess excellent public speaking skills, an acute ability to think on their feet, a thorough understanding of trial procedures and rules, and a healthy competitive spirit.
When you see these students, please address your congratulations to them as they work around the clock to bring prestige to CMIT.
Lea Brooks, Grade 10 (Counsel/Lawyer 1)
Gabriell Hernandez -Grade 10 (Co-Counsel/Lawyer 2)

Exceptional teachers and students are recognized for their efforts at the state and national level and are invited to attend NEED’s Youth Energy Conference and Awards in Washington, DC (June 25-28, 2022). During the conference, students work with their peers to explore new energy activities while NEED teachers have the opportunity to network and re-energize for the coming school year. There's time for touring our nation's capital and the event wraps with an awards ceremony celebrating student work and achievement!
You must submit a Youth Awards project to participate in the Youth Energy Conference & Awards. Youth Awards Project submissions are due April 15th.

M3C Mathworks Challenge | $100,000 Scholarship
|
Greeting CMIT Academy North Family,
I have an excellent opportunity for us to engage in called the M3C Mathworks Challenge. This year's challenge is Defeating the Digital Divide and will have scholarship prizes totaling over $100,000! This program uses MatLab which is a Math modeling software that we will be looking to use for analyzing our Robotics Data. After speaking with Mr. McKinley and Dr. Clarke, we feel that this will be a strong partnership between the Math department and Robotics Club with crossover into the Green Student Club. This skillset is both highly sought after and would benefit from a variety of diverse perspectives when we look to solve these challenges of today and the future. I strongly encourage you to look through these resources linked above and take a chance at prepping for the competition. We plan on fielding a team in 2022-2023 but are happy to do one this year if the demand is in place. Please note that the registration deadline is Friday, February 18th at 4:00pm EST and the competition is Friday-Monday, February 25 to February 28, 2022. In order to have time to familiarize ourselves with MatLab and the practice problems, I would need an expression of interest by Friday, January 14th at 3:00pm. If you are interested but we do not feel ready to compete, that's totally OK! We will have time to become more fluent with MatLab and data analysis + data modeling to approach next year's challenge. There may also be an opportunity for a Math Modeling Club to form at CMIT around this challenge using the data generated from our various other clubs and programs! So far, we have had interest expressed from both the Team Illusion Robotics Club and the Green Student Club for data modeling.
That's all for now! Please reach out to me with any questions that you have and I hope you have a great rest of your day!

Senior Picture Update
|
If you had your picture taken in December, you should receive an email with your senior proof and package order information very shortly, if you have not already.
I have been keeping in touch with the photographer regarding the second round of pictures--the personality/casual/athletic poses. Here is his response as of last week:
Hello,
I am still working scheduling this. Unfortunately a lot of people in the office and field are in quarantine or recovering at home. This is why it’s taking longer. Thank you for your understanding and patience.
As soon as it is scheduled, I will let you know.
If you have any questions, please let me know.

John Hopkins University, School of Medicine, and Bloomberg Distinguished Professor of Health Informatics, Dr. Christopher Chute, will be visiting CMIT Saturday Academy from 9:00 am to 12:00 noon on February 12, 2022, to provide our students with hands-on knowledge on the importance of health informatics.
If you want to pave your path in a field that combines healthcare and technology, health informatics is an ideal choice. Not only do health informatics occupations enable you to use your technical abilities to better the lives of others, but they also provide competitive income and job stability due to the industry's growing demand for competent personnel. Dr. Chute will help students explore the potential and significance of health informatics in representing COVID-19 medical data to forecast trends at the population level and discover predictors, treatments, and mitigations.
I am also pleased to inform you that Dr. Chute runs on several large national class grants funded by the National Institute of Health in the United States.
Attendees will be given a participation certificate. We urge students to register for the event using the link below to project the room, spacing, and resources.

CMIT 2nd Annual STEM Fair
|
CMIT will hold its 2nd Annual STEM Fair on February 05, 2022
(tentative date, subject to admin approval)
Science fairs might sound like a form of torture. However, science fairs are beneficial for acquiring various life skills that are not taught in school. Science fairs urge students to go above and beyond what is often expected in classroom projects. It gives you interpersonal skills such as research presentation and arguing for your ideas in a research context. STEM contests provide excellent scholarships and prizes and several high-level sponsors and affiliations.
Please upload your 3-5 Minutes Video STEM Summary from the link below. The final Submission is January 28, 2022.

As we approach the spring athletic season, our women's lacrosse program is looking to fill our roster with more student-athletes willing to join us in our mission to become a top-tier high school women's program in Prince George County. Each year we have progressively gone further than the last because our girls have immersed themselves in our program's 'Ubuntu' culture and values (commitment, integrity, perseverance, and sisterhood). For those female students looking to step up to the challenge of trying out for our program, please contact Coach Sok at ssok@cmitacademy.org.
