Mask Up! Wipe Down!
CMIT teachers and administrators appreciate your support as it relates to our safety procedures. Please continue to practice social distancing and follow CDC guidelines for handwashing and wearing masks. Masks must be worn properly, covering the nose and mouth. We encourage all students to bring wipes and hand sanitizer to school daily. Hand sanitizer and wipes are available in all classrooms and common areas such as the cafeteria, media center, gym, etc. Extra masks are available as well. Thanks again for your cooperation!

Morning Drop Off : LEFT Lane DROP OFF!
Greetings! We appreciate your cooperation, parents and guardians, during the morning drop-off and afternoon pick-up. Here are a few tips and reminders! Please use the LEFT lane to drop off and the RIGHT lane to exit. We're also suggesting that scholars sit on the left side in the back of cars so they can quickly and safely exit on the left side of the vehicle. Students must use the sidewalk and crosswalks as they proceed to the cafeteria entrance. Students may be dropped off BEFORE they get to the cafeteria doors. We're asking drivers to keep moving forward and when traffic stops, they can allow scholars to safely exit on the left. Again, be sure to use the LEFT lane to drop off! The right lane is for cars to exit and we are seeing an increase in the number of parents dropping off from the wrong lane. Thanks again for keeping our scholars safe and following our procedures.

Class of 2022 College Application Updates!
Our Class of 2022 Seniors are on a roll! As of Friday, January 14th, 83% of our seniors have applied to college, with a total of 776 application submitted to 148 colleges nationwide. The average number of applications submitted per senior who has already applied is 6. 80 of our seniors have already received at least one college acceptance, with a total of 210 acceptances that we have already heard about! Our seniors have also received over 60 scholarship awards thus far, totaling $4.8 million in 4-year scholarship awards, which equates to an annual award of $19k per year on average. 71% of our seniors have completed the FAFSA! If you are not one of those seniors, make sure to do your FAFSA as soon as possible. The deadline for Maryland State Aid is March 1st, but if you wait, you will likely miss out on a lot of financial aid (both need-based and merit-based) from colleges, as most colleges will not develop your financial aid award until they receive your FAFSA. Congratulations, Seniors! If you have heard about any additional college admissions decisions or financial aid award letters, please forward those to Ms. Gaudette so that we can add your successes to our list!

M3C Mathworks Challenge | $100,000 Scholarship
Greeting CMIT Academy North Family, I have an excellent opportunity for us to engage in called the M3C Mathworks Challenge. This year's challenge is Defeating the Digital Divide and will have scholarship prizes totaling over $100,000! This program uses MatLab which is a Math modeling software that we will be looking to use for analyzing our Robotics Data. After speaking with Mr. McKinley and Dr. Clarke, we feel that this will be a strong partnership between the Math department and Robotics Club with crossover into the Green Student Club. This skillset is both highly sought after and would benefit from a variety of diverse perspectives when we look to solve these challenges of today and the future. I strongly encourage you to look through these resources linked above and take a chance at prepping for the competition. We plan on fielding a team in 2022-2023 but are happy to do one this year if the demand is in place. Please note that the registration deadline is Friday, February 18th at 4:00pm EST and the competition is Friday-Monday, February 25 to February 28, 2022. In order to have time to familiarize ourselves with MatLab and the practice problems, I would need an expression of interest by Friday, January 14th at 3:00pm. If you are interested but we do not feel ready to compete, that's totally OK! We will have time to become more fluent with MatLab and data analysis + data modeling to approach next year's challenge. There may also be an opportunity for a Math Modeling Club to form at CMIT around this challenge using the data generated from our various other clubs and programs! So far, we have had interest expressed from both the Team Illusion Robotics Club and the Green Student Club for data modeling. That's all for now! Please reach out to me with any questions that you have and I hope you have a great rest of your day! ANNOUNCEMENTS
Computer Science Updates
AP Computer Science A We covered Primitive Types, Using Objects, Boolean Expressions and If Statements, and Iteration units so far. We started Arrays units in January. Students will learn about and create arrays. The use of array objects allows multiple related items to be represented using a single variable. They will learn how to traverse arrays. Iteration statements can be used to access all the elements in an array. This is called traversing the array. Students will take a look at enhanced loops. An enhanced for loop is an alternate method to traverse an array instead of using for or while loops. Students will learn how arrays are used to develop algorithms. They will examine common techniques used in array analysis. Students will take the APCSA exam at the end of this course. You can find the details here: https://apcentral.collegeboard.org/courses/ap-computer-science-a/exam AP Computer Science Principles We are currently working on Digital Information unit. Students learned Python programming language so far. There are two sections on APCSP exam. Students will develop a computer program of their choice in Section II: Create Performance Task of the AP exam. They will also take a multiple choice exam called Section I: End-of-Course Multiple-Choice Exam. You can find the details here: https://apcentral.collegeboard.org/courses/ap-computer-science-principles/exam Introduction to Computer Programming Students are learning about Functions. Functions let us break our program into different parts that we can organize and reuse however we like. Functions are the main building block of complex Python programs. We are also diving deeper into the concept of functions by exploring how to use parameters. Mr. B Computer Science Teacher

Book Clubs start in Ms. O'Donnell's classes
Students chose a book to read from 15 possible titles and next week, their book groups will meet in class. This is an excellent opportunity for students to read (somewhat) for pleasure and discuss the book with their peers. I checked in with students this week and nearly all of them already have access to their title, be it a free pdf, kindle copy or actual book. Take some time this week and ask your student what they are reading. The titles ranged from manga and recent novels to classics and graphic novels. Some of the titles are listed below: Wonder Counting by 7s A Mango Shaped Space The Graveyard Book Black Butler The Long Shot Students will be reading in these literature circles for the next few weeks. Reading is an essential skill in life. We need our students to build their reading stamina, vocabulary and critical thinking. Reading is an excellent way to strengthen these skills. And a good book is a great find.
