BREAKING NEWS
Welcome Back to SY 2021 -2022
Dear CMIT North High School Parents and Guardians, I am excited to begin this 2021-2022 school year! We look forward to being back together on campus for in-person learning! My mission as your principal is also my passion: to maintain and grow a rigorous teaching and learning environment that provides every student with a sense of belonging while helping students to grow intellectually, emotionally, and socially even in these unusual circumstances. I am happy to announce that we improved our SAT scores and AP scores last two years significantly and CMIT North High School ranked number two in PGCPS and 75th in the State of Maryland by US News and World Report. We will continue providing the best opportunities to our students to grow academically and socially. The CMIT North high school team worked hard to improve school resources and the building environment, in order to be ready for the reopening of our doors for our students. I am proud to announce that our classrooms will have SmartBoards and document cameras to increase student engagement. While we already received the document cameras, SmartBoards will be delivered by mid-September. It was my dream to have established a library and media center for the last two years and finally this year we will have a library and media center fully established. All of the library furniture and computer deliveries are scheduled for mid-September. We will also have digital library access for all teachers and students. I believe providing these resources will increase the academic focus and engagement of our students. Please check the school newsletter, website, and emails. More exciting news and updates are coming. As we are excited about all the new additions to our school, we still all experienced an unprecedented time in education in the last two years. I need to acknowledge one more time that all of us have been impacted by COVID 19, both in our personal and professional lives. Many of us and our loved ones struggled through changes in our workplace and spaces of learning. Although we have experienced many uncertainties, there is one thing I am assured about - CMIT North High School is a place where we come together, feel safe, care for each other, and support one another in the joy of being a member of a professional learning community. This is an environment that we established together and will continue to build upon. At the same time, we are all aware that we should keep following the CDC guidelines to stay safe. The guidance from the County Department of Public Health and the Prince George’s County Public Schools is that all staff and students are required to wear masks while indoors. Summer is ending. CMIT North High School Teachers started professional development activities. I assure you that the CMIT staff is working diligently to ensure the academic success of each student. As educators, we are aware of the challenges the past school year has brought to our families. We are committed to working with our students to address any issues that might impede student success in our classrooms. We know that the school year ahead will bring a new set of challenges to how to operate as an institution of learning. We are recognizing these challenges and acting with a sense of urgency to support our students as they return to school. I am confident that together we will succeed! Sincerely, Gonul Ozturk, M.Ed Principal CMIT North High School

Welcome to CMIT, Dr. Gaskins!
Greetings! I’m Dr. Rosalynn Gaskins, new Program Coordinator for CMIT Academy! I’m excited to join the CMIT family! I love Math and Science! Even when I was teaching elementary grades, I had a secret mission to make all my students fall in love with STEM! My love for STEM led me to middle school where I taught Math and Science. Throughout my 20+ years as an educator, I have been able to hold numerous positions such as Math Department Chair, Leadership Coach, Testing Coordinator, Math Coach, and Character Education Program Coordinator. I am a team player who knows when to step up and take lead. I accept challenges and do not shy away from taking risks! I look for opportunities to improve school culture, support students and staff, and involve parents. I have been able to collaborate with teachers and parents to coordinate after-school programs and create ongoing service projects and partnerships within the community. I may be Dr. Gaskins at work, but at home, I”m just Mom and Sweetie! My husband and I have two boys who keep us busy! We are a scouting family which means I love to go camping and being outdoors! On the weekends you can find me relaxing at the beach, volunteering with my Sorority, or serving at my church. I look forward to meeting everyone and catching the CMIT Spirit! Go Golden Tigers!

BRAND NEW PTSO FORMING! Join us!
Welcome back families and welcome to our new 9th grade families!! CMIT North High School is forming a different kind of PTA/PTO than ever before. This is a PTSO-Parent, Teacher, Student Organization. We have all survived virtual learning and are looking forward to implementing the lessons we learned from that experience. One thing we realized is that we NEED a strong PTSO to help our students be successful and to support the work of CMIT North High School teachers and staff. That is why we are including STUDENTS in the organization. They deserve to have a voice and we need to hear from them what they need from US to make their year a success. So we need you parents. We need leaders. We need voices. We need thinkers and doers who are willing to shake things up and make things happen. THIS IS A BRAND NEW ORGANIZATION so we are all starting in the same place. Please consider running for an office. We are accepting nominations from NOW UNTIL SEPTEMBER 27TH. We will hold elections the first week of October. Here is the link for the position descriptions: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1826vMpBM20QcZ8vwWnV7zhVAt3PopoLq7po3WQg5H78/edit If you would like to nominate yourself or someone else, please complete this form: https://forms.gle/Q8SzBQ8STYyR8edh8 SINCE THIS IS A NEW ORGANIZATION, YOU MAY NOMINATE YOURSELF OR ANYONE ELSE WHO CURRENTLY HAS A STUDENT AT CMIT NORTH HIGH SCHOOL. Two Week Virtual Summer Workshop
The Virtual Two Week CMIT Summer Workshop Program for 9th graders was a HUGE success! Thank you to all the 9th graders who participated in the program. They worked on strengthening their MAD math skills to be CMIT ready for fall with Mr. Mirza and he provided them with some new tools to add their to their already growing toolbox. There were games played, problems solved and most importantly a chance to see each other before school starts. In English, Ms. O’Donnell tried to alleviate some of the bad stereotypes on essay writing and provide students with a foundation for writing better essays as they enter 9th grade. She showed us how NOT to make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich (ask your student about this) which was a lesson on providing detail in writing. She showed us the middle of a movie without providing the introduction or ending of the movie to illustrate the importance of a strong introduction and conclusion. Students used Neil Gaiman’s short story “How to Talk to Girls at a Party” as the subject for the two weeks. All in all, 88 9th graders registered for the program and 64 attended. Thank you to the students who participated and took time out of their summer to get as CMIT ready as possible before we return to school. Mr. Mirza and Ms. O’Donnell are looking forward to seeing you back in the building!!

CMIT Summer Workshop--Hands on edition!
The two day HANDS ON CMIT Summer Workshop was held for 9th graders on Monday and Tuesday, August 16th and 17th and for 10th graders on Wednesday and Thursday, August 18th and 19th. This was a chance for the students to COME TO THE BUILDING after being away for 19 months and have fun with STEM activities. Thank you to Mr. Bayram, NSBE and Science Olympiad for making this program a success! Students were able to create bottle rockets, solar powered cars and solve fun STEM problems. They also worked with Ms. O’Donnell on the expectations of 9th and 10th graders upon their return to school. Time management, schedule making and a tour of the building seemed to help in easing some of the high school jitters the students may have been feeling. We had 53 9th graders participate and 22 10th graders. It was a JOY to see students face to face (or at least mask to mask) once again and even better to HEAR them talking to each other and helping their group solve problems, like how to put a lego set together without the directions! We cannot wait to see them in action back in the classroom. Thank you to all who participated!

STEM at Summer Workshop
STEM activities during the 3rd week of the Summer workshop were really fun and engaging. Monday was water rocket day. Science Olympiad Captains Anthony Stills and Samuel Opoku planned and led the sessions successfully. Students built and launched the rockets during the sessions. Tuesday was the day of NSBE activities. NSBE coaches led the activities and informed the students about the upcoming year`s NSBE teams. Students received information about the Solar car team, FIRST Robotics, and CAV on Wednesday. They had a chance to drive CAV, learned about welding and solar panels. Thursday was the Science Olympiad day. Science Olympiad activities were led by CMIT Science Olympiad Alumni who will be coaching High School Science Olympiad team this year: Reina Finch, John Ikegwu, Joshua Ikegwu, and Carvengy Milford. Many thanks to all who contributed to the STEM activities.

HS BREAKING NEWS
Welcome Back!
After nearly a year and a half of distance learning, it is finally time for us to come back together to learn and help each other grow. I cannot express how excited I am to have this opportunity to connect with all of you in the coming weeks. It is going to be a great year! Although this was one of our longest summer breaks, it seems to have gone by quickly for me. Still, I was able to fill it with some relaxing experiences - mostly outdoors with family and friends on my bike or in the water. I also had a couple growth experiences. For example, I spent a fair amount of time attending workshops and reading books about deeper learning and instructional strategies to support it. I also participated in an 8-session leadership program and became Dare to Lead certified. You may hear me talk about some of these experiences throughout the year. More importantly, you will see me putting them to good use. We have our work cut out for us this year. During 9th grade home visits, many students indicated some concerns about being out of practice with in-person school. There are questions looming around safety due to COVID and the Delta variant, and there are concerns over learning loss. All of this is to be expected and allows us an opportunity to develop a plan and come together as a community to support our students. We will be sharing updates about the start of the year in this newsletter and via email to help in your planning, and you can feel free to contact us if you have questions. I want to take a moment to thank the 9th grade families that set aside time to meet with us during home visits this summer. We had a wonderful time getting to know you and making plans for the school year. Similarly, I want to thank the students who participated in the Summer Workshop. It has been exciting getting to know you, and we look forward to meeting all of our students in-person in a couple weeks. Please be aware that there is an in-person orientation on the morning of September 3rd for all 9th grade, 10th grade, and new students. We will use this time to get to know each other and become familiar with the building and daily routines. You will receive more information about the schedule shortly. You can also be on the lookout for the date and time of our Back to School Night, which will also be in September. Wishing you all a joyous end to August, Ms. Colandrea

Welcome Back Tigers!
Welcome to the 2021-2022 school year. I am looking forward to another wonderful school year at CMIT North High School. A new year is a time for inspirational dreams but more importantly a time to set your goals to see the dreams turn into a reality. I am always impressed with the professionalism and dedication of our CMIT staff, the parental support and the students' curiosity and enthusiasm for learning. I join in the partnership of all stakeholders involved in working together to ensure that our students experience success each and every day. During the summer home visit program, I had a chance to meet with most of our 12th-grade students and their families. I was impressed to learn about their post-secondary plans and how the CMIT community supports these plans through offering summer college test prep sessions, essay workshops, individualized guidance, college searches, and visits. We hope to continue to provide these added services to our scholars as they aim to create better future opportunities. I look forward to an outstanding year of watching our scholars flourish. Lastly, please remember that the most successful schools are those with the most active and supportive parents. Let’s work together to provide the BEST possible education for our students.

ANNOUNCEMENTS
Mr. Ricci Introduction
Hello CMIT students, families, parents, and guardians. My name is Justin Ricci and I will be the AP World History teacher this upcoming 2021-2022 school year. I am very excited to begin my journey at CMIT and am looking forward to meeting all of the community members that invest their time into making CMIT such a wonderful school. I recently moved to Maryland from Nevada where I obtained my Bachelor’s degree in History and my Master’s degree in Education, both from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. I previously taught history at a charter school in Henderson, NV for four years prior to relocating to Maryland. My colleagues at CMIT have been incredibly kind and helpful with my transition to a new state, which has solidified and strengthened my love for teaching young people about history. In addition to world history, I will also be teaching two elective courses: a global issues course in the fall and an African American studies course in the spring. Therefore, I will be working with students in all grade levels throughout the high school. I am very much looking forward to the beginning of the school year and know that with continual communication, perseverance, and a positive attitude that this will be a great year!
