DEPARTMENT UPDATES
English Department Closing Announcements
Dear Students, Parents, and Guardians, This school year has been interesting to say the least. We’ve faced unprecedented challenges to bring high-quality instruction to our students and strived mightily to do the relational work that good teaching requires. Though with this most unique school year drawing to a close, it’s appropriate to take a moment, to reflect, and to chart a new course ahead. I’ll be assuming the role of English Department Chair for SY 21-22, and I’m excited to help continue the good work Mr. Hommel began in this most challenging of years. This has been a transitional phase for us all, and we‘ve learned a lot about our work. We know which of the traditional models are timeless maxims of teaching and learning, but we’ve also discovered which educational fads are more distraction than substantial. Each of your teachers has been doing the deep and reflective work necessary to ensure your return to the classroom will serve your learning needs. Under his leadership during distance learning, we have continued to grow. Thanks Mr. Hommel fo your diligence this year! Next year, you will observe an unprecedented level of collaboration with your English faculty. Already our work to ensure continuity of instruction has advanced to rewarding levels for your instructional staff. The collaboration has been extraordinary and productive, and you will be the beneficiaries of this labor when you come to class prepared to learn and eager to participate. We’re all ready for the summer recess, but your teachers have done so much work in Quarter 4 to ensure you resume your classes in the fall as seamlessly as possible. We’ll be on a new Learning Management System next year, and some of you have already experienced the workflows necessary to perform well in that platform. For others, it will prove new, and perhaps even a little challenging. I encourage you all to spend some time simply exploring the resource to familiarize yourselves with it. On Friday, all students received time and instruction to login and access their summer assignments. This is the minimum level of engagement you need simply to know what the platform looks like. If you want to hit the ground running in the fall, spend some time walking around in this system. We’ll all have summer assignments to complete, and the department has striven to ensure that these tasks are aligned with your first weeks of instruction and discussion in the new year. Please plan to give ample time to complete the readings and work assigned. When you’re ready to begin, please read your assigned works deeply, questioningly, and with a willingness to grow from these readings. I’d like to thank the other teachers in the English Department for their enthusiasm for our goals next year. Ms. Beamon and Ms. Houston have been critical assets in our establishment of the articulation schedule - the plan to ensure your growth sequences as smoothly as possible from grade to grade. And Mrs. O’Donnell, whose ceaseless energy has been a vital source of inspiration for our whole team, has left her strong impression in the exciting readings we’ve adopted for 9th and 10th grades next year. We’re excited for the summer, and we’ll see you all again in the fall!

All the Best! Mr. Bevard
