UPCOMING EVENTS
Science Olympiad Special Informational Night
We have an extra special Informational Night, Parent Workshop and Expo series this year taking place at the High School Media center on October 17, 2019, from 5 - 6 PM. We will have our coaches available to discuss topics that will make you more in touch with our students, what they need to be successful and what you need to know about how you could help them to go to the National Competition. We promise: Getting involved with your child's academic career can be one of the most rewarding aspects of parenting. By assisting with a Science Olympiad team or program, you can share your love of science with your child. Moreover, we will also touch the great benefits of the science Olympiad to your scholars. We ask for your 100% cooperation, assistance, and presence at this event. Thank you, parents, for all you do.

HS BREAKING NEWS
Principal's Message
Dear Parents and Community Members, It is a pleasure serving as a principal for the CMIT North High School. I’m aware of my great privilege in leading such a wonderful team of active and effective community members. When I was officially assigned the position, my first step was reaching out to parents, student leaders, teachers, teacher leaders, admin team members, and community members to see their perspective, concerns, and suggestions for our school. It was helpful to see that our students', parents', and teachers' feedback was supporting the school data including the number of behavioral referrals. I invited teachers, teacher leaders, and admin team members to plan the 2019-2020 school year based on qualitative and quantitative data. Even though it was a last minute invitation, they were dedicated enough to participate in the decision making process as a part of the school instructional team. Our first focus point was school-wide structure and holding all stakeholders accountable to create a ‘ready-to-learn’ environment for CMIT North High School. We started by changing the interviewing/hiring process, reviewing school-wide procedures, communication tools, learning walk schedules, creating vertical and horizontal meeting plans, identifying curriculum needs, identifying professional development areas, searching for an alternate program to ITEC, internship opportunities, etc. Please see the attachment to view a summary of the summer parent workshops. I’m proud that we are improving our community partnership programs to provide more opportunities for our CMIT High School Students. We established a partnership with MDOT SHA internship program. We will start a pilot program this school year and summer for 12th grade students and 11th grade students. It will be a great opportunity for our students to work in engineering fields, and they will be able to use their IT and math skills in real life experiences. I’m glad to announce that there are more internship opportunities coming, You will receive more information soon. We established another wonderful partnership with the Maryland Sister State program. This will be an opportunity to work with the other high schools around the world. CMIT North High School students will have a chance to communicate globally, learn about other cultures, and also work on projects together. Please see this link for more information - https://www.marylandsisterstates.org I would like to say thank you to the CLF leadership team for providing an additional transportation budget for our athletes this year. It is greatly appreciated! Every day, I enjoy observing CMIT North Educators working hard to maximize the learning opportunities in their classrooms during my classroom visits. I believe, with your support, we can truly make a great difference!

ANNOUNCEMENTS
Grade 9 Period 6 Biology Class is Doing Virtual Labs
Asking students to complete a virtual lab experience in a team can accomplish a variety of learning goals. While it is true that laboratory experience is a key factor in technical and scientific education, virtual laboratories have been an alternative solution for students who learn better through pictures, offering a safe environment to build up experience and enthusiasm without geographical limitations. Virtual labs enable students to participate and interact in inquiry-based classes where they can implement and analyze their own experiments, learn by using virtual objects and apparatus. Moreover, employing virtual labs provides students with the chance to develop critical thinking, innovative and team working skills.

Chemistry in the Living Systems
Science is often described as a ‘hard’ subject. By the time our scholars reach secondary schools, success in science depends on the ability to handle abstract concepts and models as well as being numerate, literate, and able to recall a body of factual knowledge. Grade 9 Biology scholars were learning that Carbon is so important because of its unique bonding properties: Carbon forms the basic structures of life. Compounds made up of carbon are known as Organic compounds. During the experiments, our scholars discovered that Carbon is the basic constituent of Carbohydrates, Protein, Fats, and Lipids, which are the groundwork of our body’s structure, support and energy. These compounds are also known as macromolecules. And what makes it more unique and exciting is when they used samples to identify the presence of these organic compounds and how doctors identify diseases through having too much or too little of Carbohydrates, Lipids, and Protein. Our lab has provided structured experiences that help to develop increasingly sophisticated mental models, moving from abstract to concrete understanding that Organic compounds are existing in the Living system.

Ms. Coholic's Science Classes
Hi Students and Parents :) Physics students will take a 2-part test this coming week on Free Fall and Projectile Motion. One day will be a quantification test consisting of problems. The second day will be part 2, which is conceptual understanding. Some students will be taking the PSAT on the 16th, and they will have the option to take both parts in 1 day. BioGeoChem students have begun a unit on the formation of the Solar System and accretion disc of the sun and planets. We will be continuing this unit this week, including some historical tie-ins about geocentric vs heliocentric theories vs the modern evidence. Have a great week!
