College Decision Day
On the first of May, The peer leader held Senior Signing Day! The event started with breakfast for all the seniors in school. Then there was an assembly of the whole student body in the gym where each senior's college choice and their major was shown in a presentation. There was also department awards handed out to seniors who displaced exemplary skills in subjects such as math and the English department. It was a successful event. Congrats to all of the students in the Class of 2018 and best wishes as they move on to their future endeavors. See the attached file for college acceptance data for class of 2018.

MS TEACHER ANNOUNCEMENTS
8th Grade English Honors -- Fahrenheit 451 scenes!
Last week was our Fahrenheit 451-fest and brought us some awesome opportunities to delve into our creative sides! Student groups represented scenes from Fahrenheit 451 in a variety of ways -- sock puppets, original raps, skits, and PowToons being some of the favorites! A few other things from last week... *We took our last F451 quotes quiz (a student favorite, haha!), and students' scores show improved close reading skills and a deep understanding of the complexities of the novel. Our final DISCUSSION (of Chapter 3/the book as a whole) will be on TUESDAY, 5/29. *We held a F451-based "Spelling Bee!" (There are a lot of tough new words we encountered in this novel!) The winners from each class were: -- Hailey Smith -- Anthony Stills -- Dave Jose -- Nevaeh Coleman *We participated in some very detailed rounds of F451-themed TRIVIA! Students were required to review and recall some pretty minute details from the novel -- much more minute and specific than in their quizzes and discussions. It was an active competition, and winners UP NEXT... We are approaching the end of the year -- almost unbelievable. In the upcoming weeks, we'll be reviewing for our final exam (Part 1 = SAT vocabulary and Latin/Greek root words; Part 2 = Fahrenheit 451 as seen through the eyes of Common Core State Standards); we'll analyze some poetry; and we will be viewing and evaluating portions of Fahrenheit 451 (the film) from Ray Bradbury's perspective. Does the film represent the themes of the novel clearly? Does the plot align closely with the book, or does it go off on too many tangents? And, of course, we'll celebrate all the wonderful (challenging) things our scholars have accomplished over the past ten months. On June 4th, students will present their FINAL PROJECTS. As "the book people" in Fahrenheit 451 memorize significant texts to maintain them for future societies, students are currently working on memorizing (200-word portions) of some of their favorite texts. They'll recite these texts (without any notes, but with enthusiasm and fluency) for their peers. Please offer to be an audience for your scholar and provide feedback as appropriate (he/she should have a printed copy of the text, so you can follow along and mark where words are juxtaposed/missed/stumbled upon, etc).
