Safety During Morning Drop-off
|
High School Families:
Please be sure to enter the high school parking lot and circle the building when dropping students off in the morning. We are observing disruptions to the traffic pattern caused by families stopping on Sweitzer Lane to drop students off. This, and cars making u-turns in front of the building or otherwise driving erratically, is making the morning drop off more dangerous than necessary.
We know time is of the essence, but so is safety. Please take your time and drive responsibly.

Ms. Coholic Morning Enrichment
|
Hello Parents and Students,
As some know, I have the morning enrichment in the cafeteria from 6:30 to 7:45 am. As the weather has begun to grow cooler in the mornings, I have had numerous students coming to the doors asking if they can enter the school before 7:50 am wishing either to use the restroom, their lockers, or to sit inside. If a student is not a morning enrichment student, I cannot allow entry.
When speaking to Mr. Avsar, I was advised that only those students who are part of morning enrichment are to be permitted entry through the cafeteria doors prior to school opening at 7:50 am. It is not in my purview to allow other students to enter the school prior to 7:50 am.
If you do require entry prior to 7:50 am, please contact the administration concerning the matter.

Smoking and Biofeedback
|
This week the 6th grade scholars are being empowered with knowledge concerning the immediate effects of cigarette smoking, along with smoking can affect the human body immediately. The heart rate of a smoker as to the heart rate of a non-smoker.
The heart rate of a smoker is the number of times that your heart beats each minute. Most people have a heart rate between 60 and 90 beats per minute. Most smokers have faster heart rates than non-smokers.
What many people don't realize is that smoking does have an effect on your body, and that effect is immediate. It occurs within seconds, and can be measured in several different ways. Some of the things that happen after you smoke a cigarette are as follows: your heart beats faster, your hand steadiness decreases, the amount of carbon monoxide in your lungs increases, the temperature of your skin goes down, and the pattern of your brain waves changes.
Interesting Facts: People who don't smoke and who exercise regularly (for example, marathon runners) may sometimes have a normal resting heart rate as low as 30-40 beats per minute.
Cigarette smoking decreases the delivery of oxygen to the muscles during vigorous exercise, making the effort of the activity more difficult than usual.
Nicotine increases levels of blood lactate. When exercising, elevated levels of blood lactate can make people feel fatigued or feel like quitting.
In some people, cigarette smoke can trigger asthma symptoms, making it nearly impossible to exercise until the symptoms subside.
Things to Remember: The speed at which your heart beats changes throughout the day. Several things can affect how fast or slow your heart beats. They include physical exercise, emotions, relaxation, and cigarette smoking.
Smokers have higher heart rates due to the carbon monoxide and nicotine in cigarette smoke.
People who smoke have a greater risk of heart disease and heart attacks.
Smoking decreases hand-steadiness.
The nicotine in cigarette smoke acts as a stimulant.
Rather than "calming you down," smoking makes you more nervous
Here's a little quiz for you parents:
1. If you smoke for a long period of time, _________builds up in your lungs and makes them look black. (3 letters)
2. Everybody knows that cigarette smoking is ______________. (9 letters)
3. Smoking cigarettes increases your chances of having a ______________ attack. (5 letters)
4. Cigarette smoking shortens your _______________. (4 letters)
5. You may develop a hacking ________________________ if you smoke. (5 letters)
6. The nicotine in cigarettes is a known _____________________. (6 letters)
7. One reason not to smoke is that you will develop yellow ______________ on your teeth and fingers. (6 letters)
8. Cigarette smoking is a major cause of _______________cancer. (4 letters)
9. Smoking cigarettes makes your heart beat ____________________. (6 letters)
10. The colorless and oderless gas in cigarette smoke is called ___________________________________________________________. (14 letters)
11. People who smoke cigarettes every day find that smoking is a difficult __________________________________ to break. (5 letters)
12. Smoking cigarettes has become less socially ______________________ as more and more adults are giving up smoking. (10 letters)
13. Scientists have discovered that sidestream ________________ is potentially dangerous to the non-smoker. (5 letters)
14. __________________ teenagers are non-smokers. (4 letters)
15. Carbon monoxide forces out the oxygen from the body's ____________ blood cells. (3 letters)
How well did you do on this quiz?
Sincerely, Dr. Sullivan-Williams, Ph.D. (a.k.a. Dr. BB) Senior Certified Life Skills/Character Education Educator
