BREAKING NEWS
End of First Quarter | No School Friday
It seems like the school year just began, but this Thursday, October 9th, marks the end of the first quarter. While we hope students have been checking their progress in their classes along, the end of the quarter provides a good opportunity for everyone to take stock of what has been working and what could be working better.

On that note, please be mindful that there is no school this Friday, October 10th, for parent teacher conferences. We hope to see you there!

Respectfully,

CMIT Administration

Dear Parents of Seniors,

Congratulations on your child beginning his or her senior year at Chesapeake Math and IT Academy North High School! Before you know it, they will have graduated from here and will be on their way to college. What better way to congratulate them on this major accomplishment than by purchasing a Senior Advertisement?

Each senior ad is in full color and is designed to be a one-of-a-kind memory. We will combine cherished, and possibly embarrassing photographs with your message of congratulations, love, and support to create a completely personalized ad design. Some parents choose to keep their ad a surprise until yearbooks are handed out. Just indicate that the ad is secret and only those on the yearbook staff will know!

This year, time is of the essence and we will only be able to accept ad reservations until Wednesday, December 6, 2017 or until spaces run out. The sizes and prices are as follows:

$70 for a ½ page ad. For this size, we highly recommend a maximum of 5 photographs and up to 75 words. If you submit less photos, you can include a longer message, up to 125 words.

$40 for a ¼ page ad. For this size, we highly recommend a maximum of 2 photographs and up to 50 words. If you submit less photos, you can include a longer message, up to 75 words.

In order to reserve a spot, please complete this form:

Michael Jackson's Thriller Visits Ms. Cline's AP Chemistry, AP Biology & Human Genetics Classes for Drills

Michael Jackson’s official “Thriller” video came to visit all of Ms. Cline’s classes on the 31st of October, 2017 during the Drill (Warm-up) segment of the lesson only. For the AP Chemistry class, students were to answer: How are dead zombies capable of exhibiting life-like characteristics? Students were, then, to extend the response to include a real-world analogy.

All classes had drills relating to “Thriller,” and its relationship to each class, AP Chemistry, AP Biology and Human Genetics. Regular prepared lessons followed the Drill segment.

Above are a few photos of the AP Chemistry class, joining in on the “Thriller” dance. Bryson, Lindsay, Hannah, Agatha, Omolara, Josephine, Nicholas and Eni show their Thriller moves.

Reina Finch showcases as Michael Jackson, "the Thriller" himself as she stands outside Ms. Cline's classroom in the Science Department.

MS TEACHER ANNOUNCEMENTS
Parent Meetings & Quarter Themes
Beginning October 9, 2017, I began meeting with parents concerned about students' grades posted on the progress reports. To date I have met with 24 parents and I am scheduled to meet with 22 parents on Friday November 10, 2017 at Parent-Teacher Conferences Day. I welcome any feedback you may have about your child's performance in class and it's been a pleasure meeting many of you before- and after-school.

Seven students have been added to my class. If there is any information you may need about my class procedures or the curriculum, please let me know. The best way to communicate with me is through e-mail at jconde@cmitacademy.org. The syllabus is one of the first postings on Google Classroom and I believe all the new students should already have the Google Classroom code for their respective classes.

The class is wrapping up the first quarter curriculum items. Students have read two out-of-class reading selections: Bad Boy by Walter Dean Myers and Anthony Burns by Virginia Hamilton. Bad Boy: A Memoir by Walter Dean Myers was intended to provide a basis for understanding elements of nonfiction with an emphasis on biographies and autobiographies. Anthony Burns: The Defeat and Triumph of a Fugitive Slave was intended to provide an example of historical fiction in which students looked at how authors use facts about a person's life and a historical time period to compose a narrative. The culminating task gave students the opportunity to compose their own narrative of Eleanor Roosevelt whose life they conducted a simulated research study.

In the next quarter, we will begin a new theme and we will read three new out-of-class reading selections. The first reading selection is entitled Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry by Mildred Taylor. Please secure a copy of the novel by the end of next week.

The past week was full of exciting activities!

Lots of students submitted creative and artistic entries for the Poe Mini-Pumpkin Contest and, though it was a very tough choice, winners were chosen. Congratulations to the #1 Winner, Melinda Kern, with her Cask of Amontillado pumpkin! Runners up were: Starr Mabry, Zainab Al-Kidd, and India Miles. Thank you for all the entries and enthusiasm -- it was a fun contest, and the judges loved your ideas! We will have another contest soon, so be on the lookout for a chance to exercise your creativity again!

We began our Gun Control debates and will continue them next week. Students demonstrated their understanding of a variety of topics related to gun control and utilized a variety of infographics, charts, and graphs to convey their ideas and be persuasive to their peers. We are practicing the use of hooks, persuasive elements (especially LOGOS), and identifying logical fallacies such as red herring and slippery slope. I've been consistently impressed with the students' ideas and arguments -- thank you, parents and guardians, for all the help you gave our scholars on this task.

We are also on the verge of completing the first draft of our Poe literary analysis essay. Your student will likely be asking you to review his/her essay, as he/she will be required to get one adult's feedback prior to submitting a second draft. Please be honest in your commentary -- our students need constructive feedback to grow in their writing abilities. Most of the first drafts I've read have been quite good, but students tend to struggle with elaborations and closing sentences.

I'm looking forward to closing the first quarter with our analysis essay. We will not have an Article of the Week in the upcoming week so that students can focus on writing and revising their essays. Please look for an Article of the Week coming home next Thursday (before Parent-Teacher Conferences) which will be due the following Thursday.
