|
We are excited to announce that Chesapeake Lighthouse Foundation has established a new partnership program with Bellucci Basketball Academy (BBA). Under this partnership, a new after-school basketball program will be offered to our elementary and middle school students. Players will be trained by professional basketball coaches, and then have a chance to implement these skills by playing in-house games with other CLF basketball teams. BBA has a very unique trainings that applies techniques used by professional athletes across the country. Please visit the website for more information: bba315.com. This after school program is going to be once a week between 3 pm and 4:15 pm in our brand new high school gym. By enrolling in this program, CLF students will have an opportunity to receive training that includes basketball fundamentals like shooting, dribbling, and defense and then advance those concepts by improving speed, reading defenses, and reacting to the play on the court. We would like to hear from you if you would be interested in this basketball program. 1st Annual CMIT-North HS Mole Day (Avogadro's Number) Celebration 10/23
|
Avogadro! Mole Day is coming to CMIT-North High School!!! Mole Day is held yearly on October 23 from 6:02 a.m. to 6:02 p.m. It is celebrated during National Chemistry Week. It celebrates Avogadro’s Number (6.02 x 10^23)! This is a fundamental calculating unit in chemistry. Mole Day was produced in an effort to promote curiosity about CHEMISTRY, and schools through the US, and states around the world, celebrate with assorted activities associated with chemistry and/or moles.
Planned are activities throughout CMIT-North High School shared with every class, presentations during lunch periods, hallway displays, etc. etc. Of course, some tasty treats to be enjoyed at the level of a mole with every CMIT HS member.
HOW DO WE EXPLAIN MOLE??? For any given molecule, one mole is really a mass (in grams) whose number is equivalent to the atomic mass from the molecule.
AN EXAMPLE or THREE... - For instance, water molecule comes with an atomic mass of 18, therefore one mole water weighs in at 18 grams! - An atom of neon comes with an atomic mass of 20, therefore one mole of neon weighs in at 20 grams. - Generally, one mole associated with a substance, consists of Avogadro’s Quantity of molecules or atoms of this substance.
This relationship was initially discovered by Amadeo Avogadro (1776-1858).
So, on Monday 10/23, we shall celebrate the value of a Mole as developed by Avogadro, an Italian Chemist/Physicist...formerly an attorney.
We'll see you Monday to celebrate this concept calculated throughout Chemistry for (mole)cules, grams, compounds, etc.
Let's enjoy our celebration of Mole Day throughout the community on Mole Day.

AP Chemistry Students Will be Leaders in Avogadro/Mole Day Celebration
|
On Monday, 10/23, the AP Chemistry students will take the lead in helping CMIT-North High School in our celebration of Avogadro's Number associated with the value of a MOLE.
Our plan is to begin with a presentation of the AP Chemistry students heading off the celebration with 10 minutes or so of demonstrations relative to a mole and how elements, molecules, particles etc. react under particular conditions.
Afterwards, all Departments have been asked to participate, and have been provided lessons, by the Science Department Chairperson, to further express knowledge, throughout the school on Avogadro and the Mole.
Treats will be served, on a small scale, as elements/atoms and molecules are microscopic units. We'll make ours large enough to both see and enjoy!
Our wishes are for the entire CMIT-North (HS) Community to share and enjoy in the very important celebration...academic in nature.

Donation Request
|
In honor of National Hispanic Month CMIT North will be having Semilla Culture Non-Profit Organization visiting our school to put on a show for CMIT North Students.
Semilla Cultural is a non-profit organization that embraces Puerto Rican culture and arts. They focus on raising cultural awareness by teaching and performing the Puerto Rican musical genres of Bomba and Plena, as well as educating the community as to the historical events that shaped Hispanic music.
Semilla Cultural was founded in January 2014 with the goal of giving back to the community: Afro-Puerto Rican music and dance. Semilla Culture is a team of volunteers united by love and respect for Hispanic culture who are committed to preserving and disseminating there legacy left by Hispanic ancestors.
Semilla Cultural connects with the community by using the arts as a medium of unity and empowerment. Semilla Culture collaborates with other artists and groups to forward there mission. They are a grassroots organization, and still growing, they are committed to educating and representing with pride and respect for Puerto Rican arts, culture, and traditions.
Although they are a non-profit organization CMIT would like help their organization with a small donation. Therefore, we are asking every student at CMIT to bring $1 between October 23 – 26 to help their organization defer the costs of providing events for schools. The students will be able to place their $1 dollar donation in a container located inside their Spanish classroom. Thanks in advance for aiding in this cause.

Languages Club
|
The languages club is a group of students who are interested and invested in learning a language, any language. The students in the club look for and find resources to learn the language with the aid of Mr. Hester. Students who are interested can come to room 104 on Mondays, Tuesdays, or both days for the club meetings from 3:00 to 4:30 pm.
Students can use their cellphones to practice the language they choose to learn, their Spanish class notebook to jot down some meaningful notes in the back few pages, and they should also bring ear or headphones to minimize distractions to their peers in the club.
See you there, Mr. Hester

Spanish Class Updates
|
Students are following a blended learning model with technology integration. They have used the Chromebooks to watch videos of native Spanish speakers counting numbers. They then developed their own hand gestures to represent numbers, which they will present soon.
Students are allowed to use their earphones in class now that Chromebooks are being used. Please allow them to bring them to class; it will be a great help.
Thank you, Mr. Hester

Science Class in Action
|
Students in CMIT science class had been working their Science Literacy aside from their subject content last week, and their essay is due this 24th of October. The details of the said work was described in Google Classroom.
In addition to their hard work, students are preparing for their STEAM (previously STEM) Fair Project which is a requirement for each student in CMIT Academy to be presented in STEM Fair. Before students could conduct their experimentation, their project is subject for approval by submitting their Project Proposal. As per school STEAM Fair Timeline, Project Proposal is due on October 27, 2017.
To avoid confusion from the science content assignments and STEAM Fair Project, CMIT science students must be in the STEAM Fair Google Classroom aside from their Science Google Classroom. Students who are not currently in my class since the first week of this month are already invited, all you have to do is accept the invitation.
