How to Keep Your Child Healthy and Successful Academically
|
Throughout the school day, I encounter several students with illnesses that could have been prevented with proper education of health and wellness. I have compiled a short list of interventions to try at home with your student to help them have a healthy, successful academic experience. Please discuss and reinforce them daily with your student.
1) ENCOURAGE THEM TO EAT A HEALTHY BREAKFAST, LUNCH, AND DINNER
Registered Dietician Kathleen Zelman writes, “Eating breakfast is important for everyone, but is especially so for children and adolescents. According to the American Dietetic Association, children who eat breakfast perform better in the classroom and on the playground, with better concentration, problem-solving skills, and eye-hand coordination”.
Studies have shown that students who eat an adequate amount of fruit, vegetables, protein and fiber, with less caloric intake from fat, do better on tests.
2) STRESS THE IMPORTANCE OF DRINKING PLENTY OF WATER
Eatright.org recommends the following water consumption for adequate hydration and health: Children 9-13 yrs old = 7-8 cups of water daily (8 ounces per cup)
3) ENSURE THEY GET PLENTY OF SLEEP
The National Sleep Foundation recommends the following: Children ages 6 - 13 = 9 - 11 hours of sleep Children 14 - 17 = 8 - 10 hours of sleep.
4) ENFORCE GOOD HAND HYGEINE
The CDC recommends washing your hands: • Before, during, and after preparing food • Before eating food • Before and after caring for someone who is sick • Before and after treating a cut or wound • After using the toilet • After changing diapers or cleaning up a child who has used the toilet • After blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing • After touching an animal, animal feed, or animal waste • After handling pet food or pet treats • After touching garbage

NEW CLF Tigers Basketball Program
|
We are excited to announce that Chesapeake Lighthouse Foundation has established a new partnership program with Bellucci Basketball Academy (BBA). Under this partnership, a new after-school basketball program will be offered to our elementary and middle school students. Players will be trained by professional basketball coaches, and then have a chance to implement these skills by playing in-house games with other CLF basketball teams. BBA has a very unique trainings that applies techniques used by professional athletes across the country. Please visit the website for more information: bba315.com. This after school program is going to be once a week between 3 pm and 4:15 pm in our brand new high school gym. By enrolling in this program, CLF students will have an opportunity to receive training that includes basketball fundamentals like shooting, dribbling, and defense and then advance those concepts by improving speed, reading defenses, and reacting to the play on the court. We would like to hear from you if you would be interested in this basketball program. Great News for Advanced Placement Chemistry!!!!
|
The Advanced Placement Chemistry educator at CMIT-North Public Charter School has attained a partnership with Prince George's Community College to use the college's labs and equipment, along with lab set-ups, to continue laboratory experimental requirements of the College Board for our excellent AP Chemistry students.
This will begin 2nd Semester!
This will prove to be a great achievement for our students!!! Of course, some labs will be conducted in our new high school laboratory facilities. Finalizing our additional labs on the college campus in a college laboratory is an enormous plus for our students.
AP classes are, after all, college classes, so having our students conduct experiments on PGCC's campus brings a higher level of real-world connection to the high school at CMIT-North.
We are so looking forward to our future experiences as we continue to partner with Prince George's Community College, its Science Department and the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Division.

1st Annual CMIT-North HS Mole Day (Avogadro's Number) Celebration
|
Whoa! Guaca-mole! Mole Day is coming to CMIT-North High School!!! Mole Day is held yearly on October 23 from 6:02 a.m. to 6:02 p.m. It celebrates Avogadro’s Number (6.02 x 10^23)! This is a fundamental calculating unit in chemistry. Mole Day was produced in an effort to promote curiosity about CHEMISTRY, and schools through the US, and states around the world, celebrate with assorted activities associated with chemistry and/or moles.
Planned are activities throughout CMIT-North High School shared with every class, presentations during lunch periods, hallway displays, etc. etc. Of course, some tasty treats to be enjoyed at the level of a mole.
HOW DO WE EXPLAIN MOLE??? For any given molecule, one mole is really a mass (in grams) whose number is equivalent to the atomic mass from the molecule.
AN EXAMPLE or THREE... - For instance, water molecule comes with an atomic mass of 18, therefore one mole water weighs in at 18 grams! - An atom of neon comes with an atomic mass of 20, therefore one mole of neon weighs in at 20 grams. - Generally, one mole associated with a substance, consists of Avogadro’s Quantity of molecules or atoms of this substance.
This relationship was initially discovered by Amadeo Avogadro (1776-1858).
