Lady Tigers Softball
The Lady Tigers Softball Team are off to a great start this season with the record of 4-0. In just 4 games, Zanai has struck out 17 players. In addition, they had two innings of all 9 batters batting against Beltsville Academy. In the 2nd inning of that game with the bases loaded, Hannah hit a triple, which allowed the Lady Tigers to score 3 runs. In addition, during that game Hannah also hit a double. In their win against Eisenhower Middle School, Hannah and Simone hit a double. In the close game against Benjamin Tasker on Thursday, October 6, Kimaya threw a player out at home plate to end the inning and prevent a run. Jaela caught a pop up to close out the inning and prevented a run as well. Grace, India, Alessa and Miya have been great in the infield throughout this season. Dominique, Atoryia, Ashley, Pamela, Destinee and Jasmine have been great additions to the team. Roshni and Layne are great second year players as well. All of these young ladies are instrumental in this undefeated season. The coaching staff couldn't do it without all of the Lady Tigers. In closing, the coaching staff would like for the CMIT staff, students and parents to congratulate your 4-0 Lady Tigers!!

Uniform Reminders
As the weather begins to change, it seems like a good time to send a reminder about the uniform policy. We are noticing that students are becoming more relaxed in their dress over time, so you may find us reaching out to you with concerns about your student's uniform.

We could use your support to make sure students are fully prepared to learn each day. Please review the uniform policy (attached) and make changes accordingly. It is worth clarifying the following two uniform requirements:

- Gym shirts and pants MUST be the CMIT PE T-shirt with school logo on front with CMIT PE pants or shorts with the CMIT Logo.
- Shorts may be worn ONLY during summer dates from the first day of school through October 31st and from April 1st through the last day of school.
- Outerwear warn inside a classroom or in the building must display the CMIT logo.

We prefer not to disrupt parents during the day or have students miss class to address uniform violations. Please review this policy with students to reduce the likelihood of this being a need.

Respectfully,

Ms. Colandrea

Grade 8 Field Trip: From Dr. Clarke & Ms. Chestang

An exciting and educational opportunity to consider for 2017 this spring is the Science in Motion Trip that may lead a group of interested Grade 8 students to Orlando, Florida. The program is an incredible learning opportunity for your child—it is both educational and fun! The Science in Motion program will give our students a deeper understanding of and appreciation for science and an opportunity to learn in the field.

Before plans can be finalized for this trip, we are looking at all possible grants and fund-raising activities. We need to know how many parents are interested in this program for their child and are willing to assist us in identifying funding sources. Grade 8 parents and guardians are invited to attend this orientation on

When: October 11, 2016
Time: 6PM
Where: CMIT Schools Cafeteria

I hope we can embrace this educational opportunity and allow our children to see, touch, and experience science in a way that is impossible to replicate in the classroom.

Sincerely Yours,

Dr. Gemma Bognot–Clarke

Mrs. Justsen's English 8: Analyzing Anthem
Students have finished reading Ayn Rand's novella Anthem and are spending some time "digging deeper" into the themes and author's message.

This week started with an in-depth Shared Inquiry discussion focused on the main character's primary motivations throughout the book and explored the "what if" possibilities of our world through their discussion... What if everyone was motivated in the same way Equality is in the novel? What would our world be like? (This is something we didn't get to discuss completely but something the students found very intriguing -- encourage them to explain the main character's motivations and explore the "what if" with you!)

In the middle of the week students dissected the Bill of Rights in order to determine which rights are ultimately most important in today's world and which were respected or denied to the characters in Anthem. In this way students are realizing the importance of not only having rights but knowing them and standing up for them!

Thursday was spent continuing Anthem projects (DUE THURSDAY, OCTOBER 13). Students learned how to develop websites using Google Sites, how to plan for/write scripts for podcasts, how to storyboard to prepare for creating videos, and how to use web tools to create completely original interactive maps.

The week came to a personal closing as students worked on their second blog entries focused on the meanings and significance of their own names. As the main character in Anthem (and all characters in his society) are denied names and are instead assigned group labels and numbers, the significance of having one's own name was a topic of discussion. Earlier in the week students were asked to speak with family members to find out how their names were chosen and to do a little research online to find origins and meanings of their names; they used this information to compose personal pieces about the feelings they attach to their own names. Please make sure to visit your scholar's blog and post a comment!

Next week we will finish our study of Anthem and students will present their projects. We will also begin our first literary analysis essay that expands upon our class discussion. We'll experience the entire writing process, including outlining/planning, drafting, reviewing, revising, and editing before submitting a final draft. Students who choose to will have the opportunity to submit their final drafts to the Anthem Essay Contest posted here: https://www.aynrand.org/students/essay-contests

It's been another wonderful, productive week!
