Updates from Ms. James' Art Room!
I just wanted to show off some more artwork! The first one is from Osevae Omoike from Ms. Lambert's class! They had the Abstract Trees project and here is how Osevae describes hers: My picture is a picture of a tree in a flowering meadow. It has flowers on top of it as well. The tree's flowers have fruit juices inside of them. Second is a city from Leroy Ngapeth from Ms. Williams' class! Third is an abstract drawing that had to use letters, shapes, and colors from Omotola Adewunmi from Ms. Brown's class!

Stay happy, healthy, and creative! Miss James

2nd Grade Updates!
Hello everyone, from the 2nd grade team! We hope you all had a great short week this week! Students are continuing to learn a lot of important material in each subject as quarter 2 comes to an end! In Reading, students have been learning how to identify the key details of a story as well as how to identify nonfiction stories. We have been working on comprehension questions about nonfiction stories as well. They've been learning about animal homes and habitats, and how different animals stay safe in nature! They have also been learning about consonant digraphs, vocabulary, and plural nouns this week! In Social Studies, students are in chapter 2 from our social studies books about making choices, goods, producers, and consumers! In Math, students are learning about subtraction within 100, and in science, students have been learning about properties of matter! Students throughout the school are also finishing up their STEM Fair Projects this week! Students are also beginning their winter term of their MAP assessments. This past week, we worked on MAP Fluency, and then we will take MAP Math and Reading Growth in early February! Teachers will be sending scores home soon! Teachers will also continue along with small groups on Wednesdays as well as available office hours during the week. If you have any questions, please reach out to your child's teacher! Kindergarten in January
What a way to start the New Year! I hope everyone is safe and healthy. We are seeing amazing STEM Fair Projects come in. We also have heard encouraging comments about student's excitement about the experiments. We have little scientists on our hands. Hopefully this is the beginning of many more discoveries. This week our students discussed and learned about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. They learned that they too can keep his legacy going, by loving, being kind to all, treating everyone equally and never giving up in something they believe in. I want to encourage each family to decide on something you can do to keep Dr. King's legacy going. The drawings and writings share what the students hope for. It is really amazing to see the world through a 5 or 6 year old 's eyes. Sometimes it is very simple and other times they show us that they really understand what is going on. The Kindergarten team hopes everyone stays safe and healthy this week. Please reach out to us if you have any concerns.

Student Attendance
Parents/Guardians, Prince George’s County Public Schools (PGCPS) continues to follow the state and local guidance in collection of student and teacher attendance. There is currently a procedure in place to identify the process in which attendance is both collected and reported for both students and teachers. Attendance for Students During Distance Learning For all distance learning platforms, students not present on days live instruction occurs will be considered absent. On days when students are unable to attend scheduled classes due to illness, parent work schedule, and child care; parents must communicate the reason for the student’s absence via email to the student's classroom teacher. All work assigned during the student’s absence remains required for submission. Live recordings and student assignments will be made available to students via Google Classroom. During distance learning only, technical issues such as broken equipment or internet outages must be immediately communicated to the student’s teacher and designated school staff so support can be provided as soon as possible. A new absence reason code, has been created to reflect when students are unable to participate in live instruction due to technological difficulties. Although parents may see “absent” reflected in SchoolMax for the day the issue occurred, the student will be considered “present” when the new absence reason code “TC” is entered. Elementary Schools Teachers will take attendance at the beginning of each day in SchoolMax. For Pre-K - third grade students who are unable to check in during live instruction, parents must ensure that the check- in is completed before the next instructional day. If parents are unable to check in that day, please contact your child’s teacher via email so assistance can be provided. Please HELP us get your students to school ready and willing each day. Thanks so much Respectfully,

L. Watkis (Assistant Principal)

Health and Safety for our School Community
Parents/Guardians, PGCPS will consider implementation of small group instruction by identified grade levels and/or designated populations of students (i.e special education, English Language learners) when several factors are met such as: Percent of Positive Cases falls between 5% - 8% Number of New Cases per Day 46 -91 Average daily case rate (per 100,000 population) falls between 5 - 10 These are not the sole determining factors but allow us to safely begin consideration for in-person learning. THE MINDFUL TIGER
This school year has been challenging for us all. I wanted to create a virtual space for our students to visit when they experience emotions that are difficult to overcome. I created a google site, THE MINDFUL TIGERS. Feel free to have your child engage with the web page. I also added a tab where they can complete a google form if they need to schedule a check in with me. I hope this is useful. https://sites.google.com/pgcps.org/the-mindful-tigers/home
