FAST Science Test #1 for 5th Graders
Hi Dear Students and Parents, This coming week on Tuesday, December 8, and on Thursday, December 10, 5th-grade students will take their Science Test which is called FAST Test. The test results will be utilized to measure the academic progress of our program. Please have adequate sleep every day and have your breakfast in the mornings. The aim of the test is to diagnose the strengths and deficits of the students' knowledge, so please prepare a noise-free testing environment for the students and do not provide academic support to the students. In this way, we can capture the true needs of the students. Have a great weekend

What an interesting week we have had back after Thanksgiving Break! This week we were introduced to Amazing Words and Spelling words. This will be our new normal! Social Studies we are digging a little deeper into government and the checks and balances of government. I want to thank our parents for your commitment and help with trying to get your students online. It has been very very difficult and I understand all the frustrations. Remember, WE ARE ALL IN THIS TOGETHER!! Thanks,

2nd Grade Updates!
Hello everyone, from the 2nd grade team! Each class has been hosting a class election with voting for a class president for the school year and we just wanted to say congratulations to all our class president winners!!!! You all truly deserve it! Students are continuing to learn a lot of important material in each subject as quarter 2 moves along! In Reading, students have been learning how to identify the key details of a story as well as how to identify fiction and fable stories. They've been learning about animals in stories such as fables, and how we can learn valuable lessons from these stories! They have also been learning about long vowels, vocabulary, and nouns this week! In Social Studies, students have finished their first chapter from our textbooks about being a good citizen, rules, laws, and leaders in our country. We are also finishing up learning about different Native American tribes! In Math, students are finishing up learning about two digit addition, and they are beginning to learn about time! In science, students have been learning about changes to Earth's surface! As a school, there has been a change in the schedule during students' SEL (Social Emotional Learning) time. In this schedule change, we will now only have SEL on Tuesdays and Thursdays. We will no longer have it on Mondays and Fridays. Mondays and Fridays during the SEL block will now be utilized for independent enrichment! Teachers will not be hosting live Zoom sessions during this block, and students will be assigned enrichment activities such as IXL to work on increasing their skills during this time. This is also a time for students to make up any missing assignments. Tuesdays and Thursdays are now SEL and Health blocks. The students' RELA/Social Studies teacher will teach them SEL, and their Math/Science teacher will teach them Health. For second grade for example, this means students will have SEL one day a week and Health one day a week due to classes switching. Wednesdays are not affected by this change. Teachers will continue small groups and office hours on Wednesdays! If you have any questions about the change in schedule, please reach out to your child's teacher! Thank you, and we are looking forward to another great week of school next week!! Also, we hope everyone had a fantastic Thanksgiving break last week, and we hope you all have a great weekend! From your 2nd Grade Team! :)

Distance Learning Update
Greetings Tiger Family, I wanted to share the updates from Dr. Monica Goldson, CEO of Prince George's County Public Schools regarding distance learning. I want to provide you with some important information regarding our plans for reopening schools. Today, we had planned to release a survey on the number of families interested in moving to a hybrid instructional model to start the second semester and those wishing to continue distance learning through the end of the school year. Due to new cases of COVID-19 surging throughout our state, I will delay the distribution of the survey. Like you, I am hopeful that we will be able to welcome our students and teachers back to in-person learning once it is safe. As we monitor COVID-19, we will continue distance learning until further notice. In the meantime, we are continuing to update and refine our resources for students and families. As part of this effort, we are seeking additional ways to support our students with special needs and English Language Learners, understanding that their circumstances may be different than others. I invite you to attend a Virtual Town Hall for employees on Thursday, December 3 from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. about our reopening plans and how we are supporting staff during this time. All employees will automatically receive a phone call to join the town hall. You may also dial in at 855-756-7520, ext. 70241#. The health and safety of your families is as important to me as the health and safety of my own, and taking this extra time to make decisions regarding resuming in-person learning is for our collective well-being. To better understand COVID-19, I have been meeting with a Medical Advisory Team about the latest health metrics. This team, composed of experts across the medical field, shares their knowledge and guidance on the raging pandemic, and the risks and impacts reopening schools will have on staff and students. This information will allow me to make critical decisions that best support you and your loved ones. You can view a video of this announcement here. Please continue to visit the PGCPS website for the most up-to-date information available on distance learning, meals and digital tools. Together, we can — and we will — get through this unprecedented time. We are one community, one PGCPS. Please continue to take care of yourself, your loved ones and each other. Sincerely, Dr. Monica Goldson CEO

5th Grade Updates
Hello terrific tigers! Here are some quick updates for 5th grade to be aware of: - FAST science testing will be conducted next week. Please look on the Class Dojo page for more updates from Mr. Hawkins. - 2nd Quarter Progress report grading window opens for us on December 11th, so make sure your scholar has any missing work turned in before then to be reflected on their progress reports. - We have been getting a lot of questions about supplementary work. You have the tools at your fingertips! The iXL program that has been purchased for our students is a great adaptive program that changes as your student improves. Having students work on their recommended skills in order to boost their aggregate domain scores is the best way to assist your scholar on their path to success if you are looking for something to supplement what we are doing in class. - GET SOME SUNSHINE! As the sunlight hours are dwindling during the winter months, make sure that you are finding ways to stay active and get some sunshine while staying safe and maintaining mask wearing and social distancing. Sunlight is important for your mental and physical health, so take some time to care for yourself! Check out this picture from the hike Mr. Rowland took to the top of Mount Tammany on the Delaware Water Gap and get inspired to get up and get active! Find ways to care for yourself and others in a safe way. Remember, an empty pitcher can't fill any glasses, so take some time to refill and replenish yourself today and every day! :-D
