First Grade Updates!
|
First Grade has been hard at work this November! Here is what our 1st grade scholars have been up to so far:
RELA - We have continued learning about parts of a story (plot, characters, settings, problem, solution, etc.), as well as sequencing (beginning, middle, and end) and retelling a fictional story in our own words! So far, we have read fables, fairy tales, and realistic fiction. Nonfiction and informational texts have been introduced as well! We are also working on letter sounds such as blends, digraphs, and vowel teams. For writing, we have practiced our handwriting and looked at sentence structure (punctuation, spelling, capitalization) and introduced nouns, verbs, and adjectives .
Math - We are working on Unit 3: Addition within 20! We are practicing addition strategies such as using a number line, making ten by composing and decomposing numbers, using ten frames, and doubles models. Soon we will start Unit 4: Subtraction within 20!
Science - We have started Unit 2: Light and Shadows! During this unit, we will learn about light, sources of light, and the characteristics of a shadow. Soon, we will also learn about sound and communication with light and sound!
Social Studies - We have started Unit 2: Cultures Around the World! We will be discussing the meaning of culture, how it relates to communities and families, and how different cultures have different traditions and customs. We will also learn about the past, present, and future as an introduction to history in this unit.
Other news: We are in the middle of elections for Class Presidents! Each Class President will become a member of the CMIT South Elementary Student Council.

2nd Grade Updates!
|
Hello everyone, from the 2nd grade team! Congratulations to everyone who were celebrated at the honor roll assembly on Wednesday! We know how hard all our students work and we are SO proud of them! Let's keep up the great work! The honor roll assembly recording will be posted onto Class Dojo in case anyone was unable to attend, and you should be on the lookout for the honor roll certificates being sent to parents from their teachers soon! Congratulations again to all our amazing students!!
Right now, students are continuing to learn a lot of important material in each subject! In Reading, students have been learning how to identify the key details of a story as well as how to identify nonfiction stories. They've been learning about animals in nature and how they survive! They have also been learning about long vowels, vocabulary, and nouns this week! In Social Studies, students have finished their first chapter from our textbooks about being a good citizen, rules, laws, and leaders in our country. We are also beginning to learn about different Native American tribes for Native American Heritage month! We are also in the middle of our CLASS PRESIDENT election! Students are running for class president in each homeroom, and they will prepare a speech to present to the class! Students will then vote on one winner to be their class president! The class president should show leadership qualities, have great attendance, work hard in class and turn in all assignments on time, be respectful and caring to others, participate in class often, and always follow directions! Votes will be counted and the presidents will be elected before Thanksgiving break! In Math, students have started learning about two digit addition with regrouping, and in science, students have been learning about bodies of water and maps! Students should have completed the MAP Assessments, so be on the look out for scores being sent to you from your teacher! We will use this data to drive instruction and work in our small groups!
Thank you to everyone who have communicated with us about students turning in missing assignments and making sure they are keeping up with their work. If you ever have any questions or concerns, please reach out to your child's teacher and they will be happy to help! Thank you, and we are looking forward to another great week of school next week!!
Also, we hope everyone has a fantastic and relaxing Thanksgiving break next week!!!! We will only be in school Monday and Tuesday next week! Enjoy your time off!!
From your 2nd Grade Team! :)

Updates from Ms. James' Art Room!
|
Hello!
This week the Kindergarteners and first graders demonstrated their excellent speaking skills and knowledge of shapes by presenting their paper cut-outs projects! Kindergarten went abstract while the next grade up made their favorite meal. Second grade has started on their symmetrical name monsters so get ready for a nightmare before Christmas! All of third grade has finished their Pop Art projects officially so after break, we'll be working on a line based project! Fourth grade will be making abstract trees and fifth grade is exploring one point perspective! Pictured below is a yummy lunch from Neveah Skeeter, a nice composition by Jaiden Powell, a cool use of colors, shapes, and lines by Logan Strong, and a great show of color families by Tremaine Carey!
Stay happy, healthy, and creative!
Miss James

Kindergarten Thanfulness
|
It is that time of year again where we start thinking about all the things we have to be thankful for. Our Kindergarten students have been discussing what they are thankful for. Ms. Derfler's friends, Alana McQueen, Tita Musong and Carter Calloway wanted to share their Thankful Trees.
Remember that next week is a short week. There is no school Wed 11/25, Thurs 11/26 or Fri 11/27. Enjoy your family. Remember what this time of the year is really about...take time, laugh, enjoy your love ones.
Ms. Williams: I am thankful for being apart of a welcoming, loving and warm school community, more specifically my team. I am also thankful for being healthy and safe amongst these confusing times. Lastly I am thankful for my personal community of my family and friends.
Ms. Washington: I am thankful for my health and family.
Ms. Derfler: I am thankful for parents that really are on the same team with me, teaching, loving and doing all they can to make this year successful...THANK YOU PARENTS!!!!
Ms. Herbert: I am thankful for my Kindergarten scholars and their families.
Ms. Curtis: I am thankful for my supportive family and friends.
