CONGRATULATIONS MS. PHILLIPS!!!!!!!!
Congratulations to Ms. Phillips on behalf of all of our staff and community members for graduating from her graduate program at Grand Canyon University with her master's degree in Educational Leadership. Ms. Phillips is a dedicated teacher and we are so excited to see her take this next step in her own education. It is important to remember that education is a never-ending pursuit. Once one milestone is achieved, another is unveiled. There is always more knowledge to acquire and new application for that knowledge to be used to help others. Again, congratulations so Ms. Phillips on her latest achievement of what are surely many to come.

5th Grade RELA update
5th grade has been all over our school business for the last 3 weeks of distance learning. All of our students are connected and engaged! We have had 4 live sessions so far and have another scheduled for tomorrow. Websites like Newsela and ReadWorks have been extremely helpful in this process and the students continue to work on using evidence to support their reasoning when answering a question. Next week, we will focus on researching and fact checking sources to ensure that a source is reliable.

P.E. - Distance learning review
Dear Parents and Guardians, I hope that everyone has been able staying healthy and active. I also hope that there haven't been too many issues with completing assignments at home. I am trying to keep my instruction to the same style as if we were in school. Guided instruction, followed by a class discussion question, and then some physical activity to reinforce the lesson. GRADES - make sure that all students are leaving a comment on the discussion question each and every week because that is being counted as a participation grade for the 4th quarter final grade. There are two on-going assignments, the activity log (2-5 grade) and food log (1st grade) throughout this quarter to help keep kids accountable with moving and eating healthy. **** Reminder **** Most classes have started doing a better job at commenting on the discussion question in the "add class comment" bar as I am requesting. Students DO NOT have to "turn-in" their comments or submit them to me personally, because then only I can see the submission it and it prevents the class from having a whole discussion together. I am taking participation grades when I see someone's name and if they fully answered the question ( not just a few words please ). I'm also asking students to reply to one other person's comment to help keep the discussion going. Please help students remember to log their activity and food consumption. Only 1 meal needs to be documented a day

Kindergarten Greatness
Wow! It is almost May. Our Kindergartners are almost First Graders! Where has the time gone? We are still getting amazing art work from our students celebrating all of our many heroes on the front line. Thank you to all the families that have worked so hard to keep our community safe. Thank you to all those who have stayed home. It has been a long few weeks. We miss all of our friends so much. We love to hear what you have been doing. Remember the Zoom meetings on Mondays to connect with your teacher and friends. Remember if you need anything, please reach out your teacher. We understand the many demands of life right now and we are all in this together.

Online Learning
Parents/Guardians, This is a reminder to provide support for all students while they are online. I understand that many of you may not get to supervise our scholars all the time. However please remind them that they are been monitored while online. Therefore, they should not be going on any inappropriate sites. Once students log on, they should be completing assigned work and doing so in a timely manner. Let our scholars know that you will be informed of their online conduct/use outside of the teaching-learning program. The more our scholars put into the learning, the more they will receive. Gentle Reminders:- 1. Create a quiet space for the study area 2. Create a schedule and stick to it 3. Monitor (when you can) 4. Have students talk about the things that they are learning. 5. They should also read independently for 20-30 minutes each day. 6. They should write down questions to ask their teachers after they watch the assigned videos etc. Please continue to be safe. We are thinking about you all. Ms. Watkis

A Break from the Monotony
If you are anything at all like me, you're going crazy being stuck in your house! It is important to take time to unwind and break up the repetitive daily grind of this time. Finding virtual activities that you can substitute for your normal activities is a great place to start. I love going to concerts and soaking in the incredible sounds of the DC Music scene. In the wake of COVID-19, there haven't been any concerts to go to (Well duh, Mr. Rowland!), but I have been watching my favorite artists live stream performances and it has really been lifting my spirits. How have you and your family found ways to entertain yourselves during this quarantine? If you love music like I do and are missing live music events, check out the link below. Live Nation has compiled a stacked schedule of artists who are live streaming and where you can catch their performances. It has a wide variety of artists from many different genres including Bruno Mars, Janelle Monae, Diplo, Kenny Chesney, and many others. There is also a Kids Bop Dance Break the happens daily for the kids to work off some of that energy from being pent up inside all day! Check it out! https://www.livenation.com/livefromhome?j=22990836&sfmc_sub=1808875884&l=4027959_HTML&u=501168346&mid=10520839&jb=274&et_mid=GEN_22990836

6th Grade Registration Clarification
Parents/Guardians, Good day. No doubt many of you listened to the town hall meeting with the CEO last night. We are extremely grateful to Dr. Goldson for taking the time to address families' concerns. Because CMIT South is one school, with an elementary campus and a middle/high school campus, all CMIT South Elementary School 5th grade students (currently enrolled 5th Graders) will be automatically enrolled in 6th grade at CMIT South Middle School for the SY 2020-21. Parents do not need to take any action at this. As things evolve with COVID-19, we will keep you informed. Thank You. Sent on behalf of Dr. Washington.

Children's Mental Health Awareness Week May 3rd-9th
Hello Parents! Next week is Children's Mental Health Awareness Week 2020. Mental health refers to a person's overall behavioral, social, emotional, and psychological well being. Mental health impacts how we think, feel and act, including how a child feels about himself/herself, relates to other children and adults and handles change, stress and other life situations. One in five children experience a mental, emotional or behavioral health problem before age 18. These problems affect children of all demographic groups, regardless of education, income, race or culture. This week I will be highlighting the importance of being healthy not just in our bodies but in our minds. The means doing things to help ourselves and others feel better when we are feeling scared, angry, sad, embarrassed or stressed. Students will learn tips on how to help themselves when they are feeling these emotions. You can find additional information at www.childrensmentalhealthmatters.org

Earning Our Stripes: Highlighting Achievements
Thank You to a very Dynamic Staff
We wish to thank our staff members for your flexibility and availability this week. Dr. Donovan and Mr. Metin led the way and demonstrated leadership in their proactive approach to support CMIT SES’s families and staff. Classroom teachers attended, and vigorously participated in the virtual collaborative meetings that were held this week. We applaud your work with students in the distance learning phase we’re in. We heard teachers share how they utilize online tools to benefit our students and meet their needs, both in large, small, and individual groupings. That was phenomenal! We heard teachers share their learning and knowledge of the various technology platforms they are using. We were so impressed! Most importantly, the staff was transparent and reflective about their challenges, struggles, and celebrations! Growth is only possible when we are reflective and transparent. These are FFT best practices. We salute our treasured staff’s determination to ensure that all of our students succeed! Go Tech-Savvy Tigers!!! We look forward to having a similar dialogue with our support staff next week. Please watch for Ms. Watkis’ calendar invite!! We can’t wait!!
