Maryland School Survey for 5th Graders
Dear Parent/Guardian of 5th Graders, Maryland requires that all public schools survey students about school climate. Last year the Maryland School Survey was administered with great success and data has been shared with schools. The purpose of the survey is to gain valuable information about the quality and character of each school’s learning environment so that schools can promote a climate that supports student learning. 5th Grade students will take the survey during regular school hours between March 2nd and April 24th. The survey will take about 30 minutes and will ask students about topics such as student engagement, interactions with adults and with other students in the school, the school environment, bullying, and safety. The survey will not ask about a student’s personal experiences and students will not be asked to provide any information that might violate his or her privacy. The survey is confidential and school personnel will not have access to the responses of specific students. The responses your child provides will be combined with the responses from other students in the school, and results will be reported for each school and district. The Maryland Department of Education (MSDE) is eager to receive this very important information about your child’s school and about schools across the state. If you have any questions about this survey, please contact Peggy Harrington, in the Department of Testing, Research, and Evaluation at 301-702-3860 or email peggyh@pgcps.org Sincerely,

Kindergarten Happenings
This has been an exciting week. The students participated in the Black History Program. They recited a poem and did an amazing job. They were able to see what the other students contributed to the program. It was a fun experience where student celebrated diversity. This week we continued to talk about diversity and similarities. Students became scientists as they observed different color eggs. Each student predicted what the inside of each egg looked like. They wrote their ideas down and then we cracked opened the eggs. We compared what they thought and what was actually inside each egg. Many students predicted that the eggs looked the same inside. It was a great way to discuss diversity in our culture. Students had great discussions about how different the eggs looked on the outside but they were the same on the inside. They made many observations about what is similar and what is different. It was a wonderful learning experience. The weather is getting warmer. Please have your children bring lighter jackets to wear outside at recess. Our recess times are after 11:00 am. Thanks again for all your support.

Black History
We are so proud of our scholars and the wonderful job that they did on their Black History Projects. Let's keep this energy with all assignments! We are however, concerned about the behavior of students in CARTS. Many scholars are disruptive, disrespectful, and some are even fighting. This behavior is unacceptable and it prevents the teachers from teaching and other students from learning. Please speak to your scholar about appropriate behavior in school. Gentle reminders: Please check schoolmax regularly so that you can track your scholars progress. Please check Class Dojo regularly. Please check your scholars homework folder for graded work and important notices. Check your scholars lunch account. Next week in learning: Reading: Scholars will continue to analyze and infer while reading Social Studies: Scholars will learn about cultures around the word Math: Scholars will continue to work on fractions Science: Scholars will continue to learn about the inherited traits

Our Shiloh Chapters 1-4 test has been moved to Monday, March 9, 2020. In Social Studies, students have continued working on their Declaration of Independence and have worked to gain some understanding of the process of checks and balances. Our hope is to demonstrate competence of how our government works and our rights and responsibilities as citizens in the week ahead as we wrap up this chapter. The Math we will be discussing equivalent fractions. If you enter the term 4.NF.1 into google search you will find various resources. Students will have their Unit 2 Lesson 2 exam on Tuesday, March 10, and can use their workbook lesson check and roundup to help prepare. We are discussing “Stay Drug-Free! Build Your Assets” Health. FIELD TRIP TIME!!!!!!!!
Hello Terrific Tiger Supporters! It's that time of the year for 5th grade again! We are going on a field trip next week to the National Geographic Museum in Washington DC to see a matinee showing of the Gombe Stream National Park Documentary about the work that Jane Goodall has done in her life! I am extremely excited for this trip as I went to this exhibit on it's inaugural weekend in the fall and had a blast. There are many interactive learning opportunities in the exhibit as well as 2 other exhibits that the students will have a chance to explore as well as an awesome gift shop at the end (I got my parents' Christmas gifts there). Please be sure to wear your CMIT gear for the field trip. Chaperones and students should plan to be at school ON TIME because the bus will be leaving at 8:30. Feel free to reach out if you have any questions!

Please send your child with a box of Clorox wipes and a box of tissue to help maintain 'germ-free surfaces' in their classrooms. Additionally, remind your scholars of what they can do at school to help stay germ-free. Thank You
