5th Grade Character Education Month of November

Character Education - Smoking: Myths and Realities
INTRODUCTION:
* This month we will talk about smoking and the effects it has on our bodies.
We will also discuss reasons why people choose to smoke or not smoke.
LESSON GOAL:
To weigh the pros and cons of smoking.
OBJECTIVES:
* Identify basic facts about the effects of smoking
* Discuss reasons why people choose to smoke or not to smoke
As you know, children are experimenting with tobacco at younger and younger ages. Even before students actually try a cigarette they are developing attitudes about smoking. Society and the media contribute to the development of positive attitudes about smoking. Children see other people smoking and see actors on television and in the movies smoking. Being children, they naturally wonder what they are missing.
Studies show that if a person has not started smoking by the time they are twenty-one years old, they probably won't start. In the past, teachers have tried educating high school and middle school students about smoking. What they found is that, in many cases, they were too late. By the time the children got to middle and high school, even if they hadn't tried smoking yet, they had already formed their attitudes about smoking.
The new research about tobacco suggests that students need to start learning about tobacco in elementary school. The tobacco education they receive will help counteract the information they are exposed to from society and the media. This months lesson introduces the class to the basic effects of smoking. Students will also get the opportunity to discuss reasons why people smoke and choose not to smoke. This is the first step in demystifying smoking and tobacco.

Happy Friday!
|
Fourth Grade Parents,
This week we have wrapped up the 1st Quarter. This means all grades have been updated in SchooMax for your review if you so desire. Report Cards are to be distributed November 19, 2019. Parent Teacher conferences will be held this Monday, November 11, 2019 between the hours of 7:30 am and 2:15 pm. All time slots have been filled for the 4th grade team. We look forward to speaking with you to address any concerns or needs; and more importantly work together to ensure students are equipped to be successful this year. Students, and parents, received a homework break this week but we will be back to our norm upon our return. Please remind students that a new quarter has begun and they are given a fresh start. Though 2nd Quarter is the shortest quarter of the year, encouraging discipline, hard-work, and accountability will help make this quarter as effective as possible. Enjoy your weekend.

Kindergarten Fall Fun
|
This is the best time of the year. The students have been having so much fun learning and growing. Thank you again to all our wonderful chaperones. We had such a great time on our field trip.
Last Friday our students dressed up as characters from their favorite stories. They marched around the school to show case their favorite stories and help get the school excited about reading. Our banner said "Watch Out...New Readers!"
Our students are learning more and more each day. It is amazing to watch them become more excited each day.

3rd Grade Greatness
|
This week in third grade students continued with basic multiplication. In getting ready for the upcoming season we created Multiplication Strategy Turkeys! On each feather of the turkey we used a different strategy to solve a specific multiplication problem. Students have really started to develop an understanding for multiplication and are looking forward to diving deeper into it in a few weeks!
Before, we jump into multiplication deeper and keeping up with our curriculum students will explore 2-D shapes. We will also be reviewing telling time to the nearest minute. Please continue to work with your scholars at home to practice telling time. Anytime you can ask your student what time it is? Or work with them to know what time you are leaving to go somewhere, or what time an appointment is can help practice this skill and keep it fresh.
Students have also been learning about different types of communities, and what makes a community! Learning about these communities can help us also learn and understand about our very own community here at CMIT South Elementary.
Thanks again for all you do in supporting your scholar!

End of First Quarter
|
Fabulous Parents/Guardians,
The end of the 1st Quarter came quickly, can you believe it? Learning is taking place, and we will stay focus on meeting our goals. In September, I shared our School Performance Plan and how you can be a part of student success. I have summarized a few ways-listed below. When a child reads with understanding, it becomes easier to connect learning into other areas such as math and science. Keep reading-it's a healthy habit to pick up.
1. Encourage reading each and every day.
2. Have students share the topics/objectives that they are learning in class
3. Sign up and become a school max user-check for missing grades/past due work
4. Support the activities provided through the PTO.
5. Have our scholars become a member of a local library and support visiting and checking books to read during leisure time
6. Check homework not just for completion but also for accuracy.
7. Insist on clean, neat work for work from scholars; students should read over, check spell, etc.
8. Encourage and motivate students to set personal goals, and support them as they work towards these.
9. Have family reading time (if you haven't started)
10. Talk about books, and Celebrate all successes
Welcome to the 2nd Quarter and Thank you for supporting the TOTAL curriculum.

Classroom Visits!
|
Hello,
In the next few weeks, by county mandate, I will be discussing personal safety with the kindergartners, 2nd and 5th graders. We will be discussing safety rules which includes rules about touching. They will learn about safe touches, unsafe touches and unwanted touches. They will also learn how to respond in uncomfortable situations. Each grade level will receive the lesson in the following ways:
K & 2nd- Students will view and discuss the video “Good Touch and Bad Touch by wow preschool kids” on YouTube. Students will create a safe circle, which is where they will identify people who they can trust.
5th grade- Students will receive a lesson about good touch and bad touch. Then they will play Personal Body Safety Jeopardy. Students will create a safe circle.
I will be sending the students home with their safe circle. Please review this with your child. Thank you for being a partner in teaching safety to your child. I recognize that touching safety is a sensitive topic, so please reach out if you have any questions.
Our 1st graders will be completing their Personal Education Plan (PEP). The PEP is an electronic tool that will follow them to high school to help students plan, with the school counselor, for high school graduation and college and career readiness. Students will be meeting with me one on one to complete the form. The form has a section for parents input, so I will be sending a copy of the form home with your child’s responses and you are more than welcome to add your input, return it to the school and I will update it in the system. This will be on going with the 1st graders until they are all complete.
Best,
Deidra Chandler
