Calling all Artist, Creatives, and Entrepreneurs! We Need Your Creativity at CultureFEST!
Hello CLF Creatives & Entrepreneurs Many of you have experienced CultureFEST before, but this year it's going to be a little different. CultureFEST 2019 will highlight our students, parents, and teachers who enjoy creating! That’s right, we want our community to share/sell their arts and crafts at CultureFEST! This is a unique opportunity to showcase our communities’ artistic talents! Please encourage your students to sign up for a FREE vendor booth or showcase your own artworks. Our educators are the foundation of STEAM, they help to create well-rounded students and for that service, we will provide our teachers with FREE vendor booths at CultureFEST 2019! For our CLF Parents, we are offering booth spaces for the low price of $50 and $100 for any local businesses interested in participating! CultureFEST is an excellent opportunity to introduce your art, crafts, products, or business to all six (6) school communities! Your booth rental is treated as a charitable contribution towards CultureFEST 2020. Exhibit and invite your business network to CultureFEST! We have expanded the festival to provide more opportunities for our visual artist, but we haven’t forgotten about our performing artist! The CultureFEST main stage is the perfect place to perform if you are a dancer, rapper, singer, poet, musician, etc. The performing arts have been a staple at CultureFEST since the very beginning. Our community comes to CultureFEST to see our students and teachers perform! Share this with your young performers and peers. Let's shine a bright light on all of our CLF artists! Join us on Saturday, November 2nd! Fill out our CultureFEST Sign-Up sheet! https://forms.gle/pPpSsheNtfhpUnTi9 Share your skills & talents!

Hello parents! We are happy to announce that testing has been completed and scores are now available. Ms. Lambert and I will be conducting the parent-teacher conference together on November 11, 2019. The signup sheet has gone out and it is full. We are doing everything that we can to accommodate our families. We will make ourselves available the week after so that we can meet with all who wish to speak to us. The times available will be from 7:30 am to 8:00 am. As the weather changes, please send the students with a light jacket or a sweater for recess. We are still in short supply of Lysol spray. As the seasons change, we would like to have parent volunteers to help with door decorations and the bulletin board. This shows your support of our school and makes the students take pride in, that their parents are involved. We are still in short supply of Lysol spray and would like to keep the classroom happy and healthy during the upcoming fall season. Please continue to donate to our classrooms so that the students will have abundant supplies.

It is now officially fall and it feels like it. In Science, the students are now learning about the different seasons of the year and what to wear. Please have your child bring the proper outside attire each day. Remember all the CMIT sweaters and jackets look alike so PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE put your child's name on it. We do have a lost and found in the cafeteria if anyone is looking for something that has been misplaced. Please read each and every evening with your scholars. Have them read aloud at times, and listen for how you can help support mastery of reading and reading comprehension. Here are some question stems to formulate questions for deeper understanding. 1. Why do you think........? 2. Explain how..........? 3. If you were .......then .........? This week in Social Studies, we identified leaders at our school, in our homes, and in the community. We decided that the teachers and the principals are the leaders at our school. In the community, there are leaders such police officers and firefighters that help keep us safe. This week in Science, we concluded our exploration of the sun. We have discussed shadows, looked at our own shadows, and how shadows are made by the sun. Students worked on vocabulary related to the sun, including; shadows, sun, hot, cold, temperature, and shadow. We also identified different objects that help protect our bodies from the sun. Permission slips for the field trip on October 25, 2019 to the farm went home today. Please check your scholar's green daily folder. Have a great weekend!

Hello 3rd Grade Parents! Students were given the project “What’s the Weather” this week to create a diorama of a specific place of their choice, during a particular season, and a specific type of weather often seen during that season. Projects are due October 8th and we are so excited to present and share our amazing dioramas! Students worked hard for another week of testing and have shown their real determination in doing their best on these! We are so proud!

P.E. weekly review - SPORTS MIX CLUB ( grades 3-5 only )
Dear Parents and Guardians, This week in across all grades we talked about movement concepts. The vocabulary for the week was "pathways" and different styles of pathways that might be seen or taken. Each class performed a think-pair-share about the definition of what a pathway is and what its purpose is before thinking of different styles. The purpose of pathways is to choose the best or quickest route to get you to where you are going. The different styles include; curve, straight, turn, bumpy/smooth, zig-zag, U-turn, incline/decline. We also discussed the speed of movement as part of movement concepts. Please try to reinforce these vocabulary words as you take drives with your children so they can better understand that everywhere we go is a chosen pathway !! We explored leaving the gym as a pathway back to class and the cafeteria to lunch, along with verbal examples during instruction. SPORTS MIX CLUB: I have about 20 open slots for students to join my Sports mix club for students in grades 3-5 only. A syllabus of each week's sport and club contract will be available to the first 20 students who come and get them from me on Monday, 10/7 and bring them signed back to me. No student will be admitted into the club or invited to stay until the agreement is read and signed by both students and parents. The club will be held every Tuesday from 2:55 - 3:55. The cost is $15 for the entire term ( until Christmas break ) and they may wear any athletic clothes or their P.E. uniform.

Updates From the Art Room!
This week we relaxed a bit and instead of a bunch of lecturing and then creating, we did some drawing and coloring the whole class! We reviewed lines and started a design, started learning about color families, and the fifth grade learned about creating visual texture for their monsters! Third graders: Make sure you have an object that you want to draw for a couple of weeks when I see you again next week, because we will be sketching ready or not! Let's get creative!

Geography Bee
Our school will be participating in the National Geographic National Geography Bee! Students in 4th and 5th grades are eligible, but it's never too early to start learning about geography! If your child is interested in the Geography Bee, please let me know by sending me an email at david.rowland@pgcps.org. It can either be a live bee where we have them answer questions in a similar format to the national spelling bee, or it can be a written test to qualify for the next stage. I am waiting to see how many students are interested (and how many parents are interested in volunteering) before I decide which one we are going to do, so please let me know! I hope to have everything scheduled and everyone signed up by the end of this month, so please let me know as soon as possible! Thank you and have a great weekend!
