Perfect Attendance
|
Parents/Guardians,
This past Wednesday, the counselor and I congratulated students in K-1 for perfect attendance.
They received their awards with pride. It was a priceless moment to see the excitement on everyone's face as they stood up and moved forward to receive their prizes.
Opportunities like this motivate students to want to come to school. Guess what? If nurtured, this habit becomes deeply rooted into who our scholars become. Therefore, please support our scholars to be at school each day and on time. We are preparing them for college and career.
I remember my young days growing up in Jamaica and receiving perfect attendance. I thought it was the end of the world if I did not attend school. The fun in learning and playing with friends during recess are memory builders that help children become better at what they think, do and want to become.
Please support your child to be on the attendance list for this quarter.
Thank you for everything that you do to support student learning

4th Grade Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT)
|
Dear Parent/Guardian:
All 4th-grade students in Prince George’s County will be taking the Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT) between December 8 and 21, 2022. The CogAT is a verbal and non-verbal measure of abstract thinking and reasoning ability.
The students who are already TAG-identified will not take this CogAT test.
CMIT South Elementary 4th Graders will take the tests on the following three days. Students should be present on all three days: December 13, December 14, and December 15.
4th Grade students took the Getting Started (Practice) session last week.
The CogAT test can only be administered in person in the school building.
The results of this test are one factor used to identify students for the Talented and Gifted (TAG) Program. Other factors include student achievement, teacher ratings in academics, creativity, task commitment, and other data relevant to individual students.
Please avoid appointments that may take your child out of school during this time period. Also, it will help your child perform best if he or she comes to school with a positive attitude, a good night’s rest, and a healthy breakfast.
Results will be available in January 2023.

Crusoe & Jones- 4th Grade
|
Happy Friday Tiger Family,
We are walking into week 16 and the Progress Report grading window will be open. We are happy to have Ms. Crusoe back with us. Please allow time for her to catch up on grades and respond to parent communications. We are grateful for your patience and understanding thus far, and we are grateful for your continued support. As always, we ask parents to review and sign agenda books nightly and review updates in SchoolMax weekly. We want you all to stay informed regarding your Tiger’s performance and SchoolMax is the most accurate and efficient way to do so.
Sections 41 & 42:
Reading: This week we have started unit 2 in our curriculum and switched back to Reading Workshop. Unit two focuses on adaptations and the essential question- How do living things adapt to the world around them? This week we read the story Feathers: Not Just for Flying by Melissa Stewart. Students focused on what different purposes that animal adaptations serve. While reading this story we worked closely with the main idea and supporting details, context clues, and monitoring comprehension. Next week we will continue to work with our story and show our mastery by completing an assessment, essay, spelling quiz, and creating a graphic feature for the text.
Math: This week, scholars studied, reviewed, and demonstrated their mastery of Topic 3:Use Strategies & Properties to Multiply By 1-Digit Numbers. Next week we will begin Topic 4: Use Strategies & Properties to Multiply by 2-Digit Numbers. Scholars will utilize the skills and properties developed in the previous topic to multiply by 2-digit numbers. Topic 4 Pick-A-Project will be distributed in the week ahead. As mentioned at the start of the year, all projects and assessments are not qualifiable for late or resubmissions. Please review the deadlines posted in Canvas and recorded in scholars’ agenda books. Topic 4 Standards: 4.NBT.B5, 4.OA.A.3
Science: This week, we have begun Topic 2 Lesson 3: Renewable Energy Sources where they will distinguish between renewable and nonrenewable energy sources. Scholars have built windmills powered by electricity and wind this week. We will dive into our actual lessons in the week ahead. Topic 2 Lesson 3 Standards: 4-ESS3-1, 4-PS3-4, SEP.6. We have one more lesson in this topic, which means our topic assessment is approaching. As it is with both contents, there are lesson notes and resources available in the Modules section of Canvas.
Social Studies: We are excited that we now have access to BrainPop, this is a site available through Clever. In social studies this week, students discovered what the Civil War was, the causes of it, and those that were involved in it. We also looked at some inventions that were created during the Industrial Revolution. Next week we will explore the World Wars and the Civil Rights Movement.
