5th Grade STEM Update
Hello Fantastic 5th Grade Parents and Supporters! We are heading into Thanksgiving week and hope that you take the time with your families to reflect on what you are thankful for during this holiday season. A few reminders: 1) Next week, we have 2 hour early dismissals on Monday and Tuesday and the rest of the week off. 2) STEM Research Paper is due on the Monday we return from break (November 28th). Students should be completely finished their experiments and working on their presentations and papers at this point. We will be conferencing with students in RELA to check their progress and help them with editing and revising their papers. 3) Please send students with a charged chromebook and a refillable water bottle each day. Thank you! If you have any questions, please reach out for assistance!

Tiger Family, Happy Friday! Welcome to the 2nd Quarter. We just want to remind families to check SchoolMax weekly for updates on scholar performance and qualifiable make-up work deadlines. It may have been a short week, but scholars were very productive. Below you will find content updates by content below containing information about this week and the week ahead. Scholars were given their 1st Quarter Report Card on Thursday November 17, 2022. Next week is a short one. Schools are closed Wednesday - Friday in observance of Thanksgiving and Monday and Tuesday we will dismiss 2-hours early starting at 12:25 pm. Our Dojo Parties will be held on Tuesday as well. Packaged snack donations can be sent with your child starting Monday. Sections 43 & 44 Reading: In reading this week we worked on Writer’s Workshop. Students have compiled the characteristics of a personal narrative throughout past Writer’s Workshops. This week they took those skills and drafted, revised, edited, and published their own personal narrative. Math: This week in Math we completed Topic 2 “Fluently Add and Subtract Multi-Digit Whole numbers”. Students completed the Assessment on Thursday Nov 16, 2022. Although next week is a shortened school week we will be beginning Topic 3 “Using Strategies and Properties to Multiple by 1 Digit Numbers” Standards 4.NBT.B.5, 4.0A.A.3, 4.0A.A.2. Students will also be assigned the “Topic 3” Pick A Project. Science: This week we continued exploring Topic 2 “Human Uses of Energy”, students conducted an investigation where they learned about how energy resources are used in preparation Social Studies: In social studies this week, students started Chapter 2 Lesson 1. They will learn about how the first Americans lived. They will identify early European explorers and colonies, and their implant on the country. We talked about Christopher Columbus and how he was searching for Asia when he stumbled upon the America’s. Students learned that Asia had the riches in this time period for trade.

Packaged snack donations can be sent with your child starting Monday. Sections 41 & 42: Reading: This week we have switched back to the Writer’s Workshop. Students will have a chance to draft, revise, edit, and publish their first story, a personal narrative. Students have been exploring what author’s do in our mentor texts to get ideas. We have closed our story of the week “Barbed Wire Baseball.” In this story students learned the story of Zeni a Japanese American who was sent to an internment camp after the bombing of Pearl Harbor. Students showed their understanding of the text by composing an essay that explored how the author uses illustrations to help the reader understand the text. They also completed a quiz and a spelling quiz. Students showed their creativity by creating an illustration to a portion of text that did not have an image. RI.4.1, RI.4.7, W.4.2. All homework and spelling words continue to be posted weekly on the Reading Canvas class. W.4.3 Math: This week, scholars have reviewed and practiced estimating products and using arrays, as well as, partial products to multiply 1-digit by 2- or 3-digit numbers. We have been introduced to area models and the Distributive Property to multiply larger numbers; use place value and partial products to multiply 3- and 4-digit numbers by 1-digit numbers; and review our previous Topic 3 lessons. Our standards this week were 4.NBT.B.4, 4.NBT.B.5, 4.OA.A.2, 4.OA.A.3. Our key terms for the upcoming lessons are Partial Products, Numerical Expressions, Commutative Property of Multiplication and Distributive Property of Multiplication. Science: This week, we have dedicated extra time to our first lesson in our Topic 2: Humans Uses of Energy. Students have conducted investigations where they learned about the use of renewable and nonrenewable energy sources and have attempted to use a potato as a source of energy as well. The standards are 4-ESS3-1, 4-PS3-4, 4-CCC-2, and 4-CCC-5. Social Studies: This week students have continued to explore the foundations of America. We focused on how the United States grew due to the Louisiana Purchase. We also explored the origins of the Civil War, the participants in it, and how the country was forever changed after it.

Second Grade Updates!
Hello Second Grade Parents! We have been BUSY in second grade! Please read on to see all of the things we are working on! This week in second grade... RELA We are in Unit 2 Week 2-Nature's Wonders. In this unit, students are natural and man-made patterns in the world. They are reading informational text and practicing asking and answering questions to develop comprehension. We are also learning about vowel digraphs (two vowels that make one sound). Our vowel digraphs are /ae/, /ay/, and /ai/. All of these digraphs make the long a sound (i.e. play). We will extend some practice activities into next week as we will have an extremely short week coupled with 2-hour early dismissal days. Science Students are exploring the scientific method in class to support STEM project efforts at home. Please be on the look out for final submission information from your student's homeroom teacher. Social Studies Students are wrapping up Unit 2 on People, Places, and Nature. In this unit, students are learning to use maps to locate places. They are also learning the characteristics of where they live from small scale, Maryland, to a larger scale, North America. Topic 2 assessments are forthcoming, please look out for more information from your scholar's homeroom teacher. Health We are continuing to learn more about the parts of the brain, how it works, and how we can take care of it. Math Students are working through Topic 3- Adding within 100. In this topic, students are practicing various strategies to help them add two numbers with sums within 100. Some strategies that students will be learning are: hundred chart, number line, break apart, and compensation. Please consider practicing these skills at home by having students work on the additional homework pages sent home. Topic 3 assessments will also be forthcoming. Updates and Reminders: 1. Please be sure to check your scholar's purple folder every night! Sign their calendar nightly in acknowledgement of daily behavior. 2. Students should bring a water bottle to school with them daily. 3. Homework is in full effect! Students should be completing 4 spelling assignments weekly in their spelling notebook AND 5 DreamBox lessons weekly. Remember, DreamBox is an application accessed through Clever. Participation in homework will be graded. 4. Remember to adhere to uniform policy. As it gets colder, please be reminded that outerwear needs to be a CMIT South ES jacket or sweater. All other jackets and coats can be worn outdoors, but should not be worn indoors. 5. Please continue to check SchoolMax regularly. Reach out to your child's teacher with any questions regarding grading. Thank you for all of your support so far this year! We are thankful for every one of you!
