What Are Our Students Learning?
|
Parents/Guardians,
Students K-5 are engaged in learning and mastering common core skills across content (English Language Arts and Mathematics). These standards may be found on the Maryland Common Core website. https://www.corecommonstandards.com/common-core-state-standards/state-standards/maryland-standards/
The standards are a set of skills and concepts that students must master by the end of each grade level. They are designed to prepare students to be on track for college and careers.
As you have conversations with scholars, find out what skills they are currently learning, and challenge them to seek additional information to support learning. One way to support and extend learning is through IXL, iReady, and any other online platforms you may be currently using.
Last week's IXL data showed that since September our students have been practicing and mastering skills out of school. Kudos to you for supporting this initiative.
Please continue to provide that time and space to make reading and learning possible.
“The future belongs to those who prepare for it today.”

Second Grade Updates!
|
Hello Second Grade Parents!
This last week was a busy one! On Wednesday, students pledged to be drug free! They learned about why we celebrate Red Ribbon Week and how to take care of their bodies! Students participated in a selfie-prop contest to represent drug-free practices. They also participated in a Book Character Parade on Friday. We loved seeing all of their book characters!
This week in second grade...
RELA
We have finished Unit One-You Are Here. Students reflected on the essential question of, "How do different places affect us?" They also completed a unit assessment to assess their ability on skills learned throughout chapter one. Next week, students will begin Unit Two-Nature's Wonders. In this unit, students will read a variety of informational texts to explore the overarching question of "What patterns do we see in nature?"
Science
Students are exploring the scientific method in class to support STEM project efforts at home. Please be sure to submit your STEM fair materials, procedures, and variables on CANVAS by Friday, November 4th. Additional details about these items are available on your scholar's CANVAS classroom.
Social Studies
Students have begun Topic 2- People, Places, and Nature. In this unit, students are learning to use maps to locate places. They are also learning the characteristics of where they live from small scale, Maryland, to a larger scale, North America.
Health
We are continuing to learn more about the parts of the brain, how it works, and how we can take care of it.
Math
Students are working through Topic 3- Adding within 100. In this topic, students are practicing various strategies to help them add two numbers with sums within 100. Some strategies that students will be learning are: hundred chart, number line, break apart, and compensation. Please consider practicing these skills at home!
Updates and Reminders:
1. Please be sure to check your scholar's purple folder every night! Sign their calendar nightly in acknowledgement of daily behavior.
2. Students should bring a water bottle to school with them daily.
3. Homework is in full effect! Students should be completing 4 spelling assignments weekly in their spelling notebook AND 5 DreamBox lessons weekly. Remember, DreamBox is an application accessed through Clever. Participation in homework will be graded.
4. Remember to adhere to uniform policy. As it gets colder, please be reminded that outerwear needs to be a CMIT South ES jacket or sweater. All other jackets and coats can be worn outdoors, but should not be worn indoors.
5. As we are nearing the end of the quarter, please be sure you are checking SchoolMax regularly. Reach out to your child's teacher with any questions regarding grading.
Thank you for all of your support so far this year! We are thankful for every one of you!

5th Grade Updates
|
Greetings Great Grown-Ups of 5th Grade!
Please send students with refillable water bottles. There are no water fountains in the school still because of COVID concerns and the county is no longer purchasing single use water for students, so they will need to bring a refillable bottle. We have refill stations, but no water fountains! If your student has a D or E in a class, you should have already signed up for conferences already and most are completed. If this is not the case, please check your student’s progress report and reach out to their teachers to schedule a conference. Please check SchoolMAX at least once a week, as this is our official method for communicating grades with parents. Monday, October 31 is the LAST DAY that we will be accepting make-up work or retakes for Quarter 1 unless another agreement has been ALREADY made with your child’s teacher.
THE NEXT STEM FAIR CHECKPOINT IS MONDAY, OCTOBER 31. Students will need to turn in their procedures, materials, and variables on Monday.
Our spelling words next week will be focusing on the long vowel sounds.

In Social Studies, we will be having our Native American assessment this week
In Math, we are moving from using mental math to add and subtract decimals to using arithmetic to perform the same skill with more difficult decimals.
In Science, we will be moving onto Earth Systems and focusing on the following standards:
5-ESS2-1.
Develop a model using an example to describe ways the geosphere, biosphere, hydrosphere, and/or atmosphere interact.
5-ESS2-2.
Describe and graph the amounts of saltwater and fresh water in various reservoirs to provide evidence about the distribution of water on Earth.
5-ESS3-1.
Obtain and combine information about ways individual communities use science ideas to protect the Earth’s resources and environment.

Thinking Safety
|
Parents/Guardians,
As the Halloween celebration approaches, it is essential to consider our scholars' safety.
Many years ago, as my younger daughter walked the community with friends, a dad and I drove slowly behind them. We maintained a reasonable distance, but we were on the alert should something happen.
The need to be more cautious has intensified. Therefore, let's enjoy the time with family and friends, but be mindful of safety at all times.
