National Day on Writing
National Day on Writing® The National Council of Teachers of English has established October 20 as the National Day of Writing® During the Pandemic, many students and adults did not get to spend quality time writing. We were instead sitting and reading especially on a Chromebook, and that was a good activity to do. But let's begin to write...express your ideas in writing and tell why. Focus on writing on a topic this day: write a letter to someone, write a short story and read it to your children/students, and encourage your students/children to write and share what they write on this day. Read Write Now!

5th Grade Updates!
Salutations Stupendous Students and Supporters! Just a few schedule reminders. There is no school coming up on Friday, October 21 for Professional Development. Next week is also Anti-Bullying School Spirit Week, so please look at the School Story on Dojo to see what students will be wearing to participate in the daily activities and show their school spirit! PICTURE DAY IS MONDAY, OCTOBER 17!!!! Please send students with refillable water bottles. There are no water fountains in the school still because of COVID concerns and the county is no longer purchasing single use water for students, so they will need to bring a refillable bottle. We have refill stations, but no water fountains! If your student has a D or E in a class, you should have already signed up for conferences already and most are completed. If this is not the case, please check your student’s progress report and reach out to their teachers to schedule a conference. Please check SchoolMAX at least once a week, as this is our official method for communicating grades with parents. In Reading, because of the back to back 4 day weeks, we ended up extending Week 3 last week and didn’t get to the poetry. This week, we will be covering poems about different journeys that the authors went on and learning about the various experiences that are had on different types of journeys. The essential question for the week is, "I can learn more about the theme Journeys by analyzing language in poetry." We will be talking about the text features of poetry such as rhythm, sound effects, text structure, and figurative language. This week's spelling focus is once again words that end with the suffixes -able and -ible. LIST 1 noticeable admissible reducible available justifiable digestible producible considerable irritable combustible LIST 2 conceivable plausible retrievable divisible fathomable sensible renewable flexible hospitable Incredible In Social Studies, we have finished the lesson work in Chapter 1, our first chapter about Native Americans. This week will be all about project-based learning. Students will receive the project assignment on Monday to turn in on Thursday. Each group will be assigned a different Native American cultural group and will have to create an artifact and imitation museum exhibit (complete with placard and labels). Students will be working on this project in class. In Science, students will be reviewing states and properties of matter and preparing for their topic assessment on Thursday. Reviews will happen in class and will be reflected in the homework assignments as well. For the STEM fair, students should have already turned in their topics to either Ms. Thomas or Ms. Jenkins and should have gotten them approved and returned. Students should be working on their background research in order to form their hypothesis. Student’s Hypotheses are due on the 17th, but because of the delay in returning Topics, we will be accepting them for full credit up until Thursday, October 20. In Math, students will use properties of and strategies in addition to solve problems mentally. Mental addition and subtraction involves changing one or more numbers so that calculations are easy to do. Students will be moving into adding and subtracting with decimals as well. You can support this at home by having students grocery shop with you and make estimations of what the grocery totals will be. Then compare their estimation to the final bill at the register to see how close they are!

Second Grade Updates!
Hello Second Grade Parents! We are so grateful to have met with so many of you at Parent Conferences! We look forward to a continued partnership as we progress through a successful year in second grade. This week in second grade... RELA We are continuing unit one, “You are Here” in our curriculum. Our unit essential question is “How can a new place help us grow and change?” We will explore this question through realistic fiction text. We will also examine the elements of realistic fiction and the plot of each story. In phonics we are reviewing inflected endings: -s, -es, -ed, and -ing. Science Students will begin exploring the scientific method in class to support STEM project efforts at home. Please be sure to submit your STEM fair topic, question, and hypothesis to your classroom teacher in the format requested by Monday, October 17th. Social Studies Students will take their Topic 1 test comparing families in the past to families today. Then students will begin exploring people, places, and nature. Health We are beginning our new issue on the brain! Students are learning more about the parts of the brain, how it works, and how we can take care of it. Math Students are working on Topic 2 which involves working with Equal Groups. In this topic, students are distinguishing between even and odd numbers, as well as using and making arrays to find totals through repeated addition and skip counting. Help at home! Look for arrays in real life (i.e. baking cookies, window frames, door panels, etc.) and talk about how many rows (horizontal) and how many columns (vertical). Practice skip counting at home, first by ones and then by tens, fives, and twos. Updates and Reminders: 1. Please be sure to check your scholar's purple folder every night! Sign their calendar nightly in acknowledgement of daily behavior. 2. All second grade classes will have afternoon snack. Snacks should be healthful. Please be mindful of students with allergies and attempt to send allergy friendly snacks. 3. Students should bring a water bottle to school with them daily. 4. Homework is in full effect! Students should be completing 4 spelling assignments weekly in their spelling notebook AND 5 DreamBox lessons weekly. Remember, DreamBox is an application accessed through Clever. Participation in homework will be graded. 5. Remember to adhere to uniform policy. As it gets colder, please be reminded that outerwear needs to be a CMIT South ES jacket or sweater. All other jackets and coats can be worn outdoors, but should not be worn indoors. 6. As we are nearing the end of the quarter, please be sure you are checking SchoolMax regularly. Reach out to your child's teacher with any questions regarding grading. Thank you for all of your support so far this year! We are thankful for every one of you!

Fabulous Fourth Grade
Reading: The last two weeks students have been participating in our Writing Workshop. A Writing Workshop is a chance for students to create an original story or text. Our topic for the first unit is “Personal Narrative.” Students have determined the topic of their personal narratives and have begun drafting their stories. Next week we will go back to the Reading Workshop as we read the text “Twins in Space”. In this magazine article students will learn about the Kelly Brothers who are astronauts and the major space experiment they did with NASA. We will work on the skills of close reading, monitoring inner conversations, main idea, and text structure. Math: We are moving through Topic 2 swiftly. This week, we have covered lessons 3-6. We practiced addition and subtraction using mental math, the Commutative, Associative, and Identity Properties, as well as regrouping. Next week we will wrap up our Topic 2 and move on to Topic 3 which reintroduces multiplication. Topic 2 assessment will be next Thursday and Topic 2 Pick-A-Project is due the same day. Look forward to the Home Connections letter for the upcoming topic. Science- We have wrapped up our Collision and Thermal Energy lessons and experiments. Next week we will begin learning about electric circuits which closes our Topic and will be preparing for our Topic 1 science assessment. The date is forthcoming. Students should also be working on their STEM fair projects. At this point they should have submitted their question and topic. Social Studies: The first chapter is all about the geography of the United States. So far students have identified that there are five regions within the U.S. and all of them are different. Students have also explored the different climates that can be found in those regions. This week students discussed the natural resources that can be found in these different regions. Next week our students will explore how people have adapted to living in the different lands in the United States.

Clubs are going strong into the 2nd week ! Scholars are extremely engaged in various fun and intellectual activities. They are building and coding robots, making slime, preparing for Anti-Bullying skits, learning various songs, drawing anime characters, sketching, learning about different businesses, having math challenges, learning how to play and move chess pieces, strategies and more. Click the following link to view pictures of 10/13/2022 clubs: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1yetG_OT07FbEQd80W6tNn1E-7guNzgQl/view?usp=sharing We are so proud of the AMAZING work our scholars and club leaders are doing thus far. GRRRrrreat Job! Go TIGERS! Parents, due to the fact our scholars eat lunch early we would like to implement snack time during clubs. I am asking for snack and juice donations so our scholars can enjoy a snack and juice every time their club meets. All snacks and juice must be purchased from a store and come sealed to school. Here are suggestions of snacks: Chips Goldfish Rice crispy treats Scooby-Doo treats Pop tarts CheezIts Teddy grahams Nutrigrain bars No peanuts or peanut butter snacks due to allergies. If you do not have time to go to the store, you can use the following link to purchase snacks or juice from the Amazon WishList and have it delivered to the school: https://www.amazon.com/hz/wishlist/ls/D4OOZNE3OY33?ref_=wl_share If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me at t.lewissimmons@pgcps.org Thank you for your continued support and cooperation.
