5th Grade Updates
|
Please make sure agenda books are being checked each night. They contain important communications about upcoming events as well as homework assignments. Also, parents should be checking SchoolMAX at least once a week, as this is the official platform for student grades. If there are any questions or discrepancies, please reach out to teachers so that we can resolve any issues.
In Science, students will be finishing up the properties of matter and taking their assessment for the topic. STEM fair topic questions should be submitted to Science teachers by Friday, October 9th this week.
In Math, students are continuing work on decimals and place value. Some students may be moving onto adding, multiplying, and dividing decimals before the end of the week. A way that you can support this at home is by asking students questions involving money (take them to the grocery store and have them tally up the total to compare to the actual total at the register!).
In Social Studies, we are continuing to celebrate hispanic heritage month and moving forward in the unit about the first americans. We are learning about how the climate and geography affected the lifestyles of native american groups and how those groups were similar and different.
In Reading, we are reading an account from a sailor on the Santa Maria on their voyage to North America. We will also be reviewing a historically accurate version of Christopher Columbus’s voyage and arrival in the Americas to provide students with real history.

3rd Grade Updates!
|
Hi everyone! We are finishing up our first month here in third grade and we are moving right along into October!
This week we continued on in our curriculum for each subject as well as celebrated Hispanic Heritage Month! We also had our September pep rally on Thursday where we celebrated our students' birthdays as well as our student of the month winners! Each month a student will be selected as our student of the month in each homeroom. To get chosen, students must come to school and be on time everyday, show responsibility and kindness to all students, and complete all of their work on time!
Congrats to our first month's winners!
Ms. McDonagh's Homeroom: Neh Ngwatancho
Ms. Fleet's Homeroom: Faith Olajide
Ms. Mathews' Homeroom: Makayla Ayena
Ms. Balogun's Homeroom: Christian Griffin
Next week, students will be taking the DIBELS assessment for Reading. There are always a few tests close together in the fall as it is the beginning of the year and they are helpful baselines for teachers and parents to see where students are at. Please see the DIBELS letter on class dojo.
Please make sure to check Canvas and the weekly calendar frequently to help keep students on track!
If anyone needs assistance using Canvas, please let your teacher know so we can assist you! We will be using it frequently this year! Also, please make to be checking Class Dojo frequently as we do post a lot of information there for you all. If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to the 3rd grade teachers and we will be happy to help!
Please use the 3rd grade Google Site for lots of helpful resources and links as well as an assignments page to help keep parents in the loop of everything we are doing!

Second Grade Updates!
|
Hello Second Grade Parents!
This week in second grade...
RELA
We are continuing unit one, “You are Here” in our curriculum. Our unit essential question is “How do different places affect us?” Our weekly question will focus on, “How do different places make us feel?" Students will explore this essential question through poetry. In spelling, students will work to decode words with consonant digraphs. For example, the word lunch has five letters, but it has four sounds because /ch/ is a consonant digraph that makes one sound.
Science
We will continue learning about properties of matter. Students will be able to describe matter and distinguish between solids, liquids, and gases.
Social Studies
Students will be finishing up their unit on families. In this unit, students learned that families are different and unique. They have also compared families in the past to families in the present.
Health
We are closing in on this month's issue on safety. Students have learned more about how to be safe in both their school community and home community. Students have also learned more about rules and laws, how to handle common emergencies, and about how they can help to keep their friends safe.
Math
We are wrapping up topic one and preparing to take our topic test. Students should be working to be fluent in addition and subtraction within 20. Encourage our efforts at home! Write down a few facts and race them to finish. Challenge your students to answer math questions quickly and accurately.
Updates and Reminders:
1. Please be sure to check your scholar's purple folder every night! Sign their calendar nightly in acknowledgement of daily behavior.
2. All second grade classes will have afternoon snack. Snacks should be healthful. Please be mindful of students with allergies and attempt to send allergy friendly snacks.
3. Students should bring a water bottle to school with them daily.
4. Homework is in full effect! Students should be completing 4 spelling assignments weekly in their spelling notebook AND 5 DreamBox lessons weekly. Remember, DreamBox is an application accessed through Clever. Participation in homework will be graded.
5. Please be on the look out for communication regarding parent conferences on October 10th. Your child's teacher will send out a Sign Up Genius SOON!
6. Begin thinking about STEM Fair topic ideas! Reach out to your homeroom teacher if you need support.
Thank you for all of your support so far this year! We are thankful for every one of you!

Reading at Home: Tips for Kindergarten Parents
|
Family time is learning time!
Did you know that kids learn most of their vocabulary outside of school, through conversations with family and friends? Or that drawing pictures during play time lays the foundation for reading and writing, even for the youngest of learners? Consistent adult support at home is a key contributor to a child’s educational success. Reading is one skill in particular where at-home support is vital for healthy progression. Teachers can provide a wealth of materials for students, but parental support is very necessary in order for scholars to develop a positive attitude toward learning. We encourage families to support students in gaining a true love for reading!

DIBELS Test for Kindergarteners through 3rd Graders
|
Dear Parent/Guardian:
Prince George’s County Public Schools (PGCPS) is pleased to inform you that students in grades K-3 will be using Amplify’s mClass with DIBELS 8th Edition. This assessment has been chosen in accordance with Maryland Senate Bill 734, which requires screening of every kindergarten, first, second, and third-grade student to identify if the student is at risk for reading difficulties. Amplify’s mClass with DIBELS 8th Edition is a series of brief assessments that are administered one-on-one. The assessment results will help teachers determine students’ abilities in the areas of phonological awareness, phonics, and reading comprehension. These series of measures will take 5-8 minutes per child. Amplify’s mClass with DIBELS 8th Edition assessment will be administered between September 26 and October 19, 2022.
Teachers and staff will use the results from Amplify’s mClass with DIBELS 8th Edition assessment to identify students who are in need of supplemental instruction and to provide individualized instruction for all students. Since this assessment is an instructional tool for teachers no grade will be assigned. Parents/Guardians will receive a report with their child’s testing results after the administration.
CMIT South Elementary will start DIBELS on Monday, October 3, 2022.
If you have any questions, please reach out to your child’s Homeroom/Reading Teacher.
