National Heritage Month
|
Parents/Guardians,
September 15 to October 15 is National Hispanic American Heritage Month.
Our population is very diverse and we appreciate the richness of our cultures as we teach and learn. At CMIT, we are mindful of the value of our diverse cultures as we work together. Students are being taught to work in collaborative groups, allowing them to listen, learn about, and respect others.
We are excited that as we interconnect with people from different cultures, we can also learn to be tolerant of others.
On Friday, September 23, we celebrated with Hispanic music/dance at school. Students and staff had a great time.
There are various activities scheduled for the National Hispanic Heritage Month.
You may view these at https://www.archives.gov/calendar
Thank you for partnering with CMIT.
Together we can achieve much.
Respectfully,
L. Watkis (Assistant Principal)

5th Grade Updates

Please make sure agenda books are being checked each night. They contain important communications about upcoming events as well as homework assignments. Also, parents should be checking SchoolMAX at least once a week, as this is the official platform for student grades. If there are any questions or discrepancies, please reach out to teachers so that we can resolve any issues.
This week in reading: In Life On Earth - and Beyond by Pamela S. Turner, students will be traveling to the vastly different extreme climates of The Dry Valleys in Antarctica and the Atacama Desert in Chile. Students will read about how researching in these extreme environments assists NASA astronauts in their other-worldly endeavors! Students will study greek root words such as chron, meter, photo, bio, geo, and ology.

In social studies, students will be shifting focus from foundational social studies skills such as reading a map and the 5 themes of geography to the first americans and the journeys that they took to arrive on this continent as well as their continued journey once they arrived. We will learn about the nomadic tribes of the Midwest, the pueblos of the native americans in the south west, and the hunter-gatherer nations of the northeast and southeast.
In math, students will be continuing work on whole number multiplication and division as well as the decimal number system. Students are working to understand the inverse properties of multiplication and division to solve real-world problems. Students will also be working to understand decimal place value as an extension of whole number place value, where each place value to the left of another is ten times greater than the one to the right, and each value to the right is 1/10 of the place to its left.
In science, students will be studying the properties of matter. Students will investigate what causes matter to change from one state to another and the similarities and differences between the states.

Happy Friday Beautiful People!
Week 4 has come to a close and scholars have made great progress. This week, small group instruction began and it has only taken a few days for transitions to be made with ease; scholars have adjusted and added the use of their agenda books to their daily classroom routine; and we have wrapped up and reviewed our first Math unit. Job well done Tigers!
All families should have received a hard copy of the STEM Fair packet as well as deadline form. A special thank you to all families who attended the STEM Fair Parent Night yesterday! Remember that this project is, not only a major part of scholars 2nd Quarter grade but, an opportunity that allows them to put knowledge into action through hands-on experimentation and real life-application of the scientific method. It is highly encouraged that parents allow students to strengthen and demonstrate their knowledge, as well as, enjoy the journey of completing this project with parental guidance and support from a distance.
Home-School Connection letters have been sent home and as always, my Weekly Review will be shared on Monday identifying the objectives, standards, and other important information for our activities and new topics. Here is a quick summary:
Math- Topic 2 focuses on multi-digit whole number addition and subtraction fluency. Scholars will master this with mental math, estimation, and more. It is estimated to carry us into mid- or late October.
Science- We are still in Topic 1, but we are right on schedule. Though our overall focus remains to be Energy and Motion, we will begin focusing on Collision and energy Transfers. As previously mentioned, each lesson has a hands-on experiment. Thanks to you all, we have all the materials we need. Pictures will be shared in next week's newsletter.
Important Upcoming Dates:
Monday September 26, 2022- Topic 1 Math Assessment
Friday September 30, 2022- Professional Development Day (Schools Closed for Students)
Monday October 3, 2022- STEM Fair Topic submission deadline

Second Grade Updates!
|
Hello Second Grade Parents!
We have been busy in second grade!
RELA
We are continuing unit one, “You are Here” in our curriculum. Our unit essential question is “How do different places affect us?” Our weekly question will focus on, “How does living in a community help people?" Students will explore this essential questions through a variety of non-fiction texts. In spelling, students will work to decode words with consonant blends (i.e. pl- like in plant).
Science
We will continue learning about properties of matter. Students will be able to describe matter and distinguish between solids, liquids, and gases.
Social Studies
Students will continue learning about our community and country and how they fit in. Students are taking a closer look at families, their traditions, and what makes them special.
Health
In this month's issue, we are focusing on safety. Students are learning more about how to be safe in both their school community and home community. Students are also learning more about rules and laws, how to handle common emergencies, and about how they can help to keep their friends safe.
Math
We are continuing Topic 1. This topic involves fluently adding and subtracting within 20. This week, students will practice subtraction strategies that support fact fluency. Please look for an update from your teacher for when the topic one unit test will be!
Updates and Reminders:
1. Please be sure to check your scholar's purple folder every night! Sign their calendar nightly in acknowledgement of daily behavior.
2. All second grade classes will have afternoon snack. Snacks should be healthful. Please be mindful of students with allergies and attempt to send allergy friendly snacks.
3. Students should bring a water bottle to school with them daily.
4. Homework is in full effect! Students should be completing 4 spelling assignments weekly in their spelling notebook AND 5 DreamBox lessons weekly. Remember, DreamBox is an application accessed through Clever. Participation in homework will be graded.
5. MAP Test scores were sent home. Please hang onto these as they will be discussed during parent conferences on October 10th!
Thank you for all of your support so far this year! We are thankful for every one of you!

Social Emotional Learning
|
School Community,
This is our first year starting with all our students in the building.
The pandemic took its toll on our social and emotional learning. Many of us were teaching and learning from home. While adults can use sound judgment to make decisions easily, our students often experience initial challenges. Of course, as the adults provide care and support, students are reminded of the best choices that they need to make at home and most importantly at school. Everyone, especially our students will need time and support from home and school to develop and use the skills necessary to respect and appreciate others.
One important theme that emerges from the post-pandemic period is Social Emotional Learning. It is of significance because as students spend time away from home, they need to use words, actions, and thoughts that keep everyone safe in the learning space. With that said, we need the support of everyone to ensure that our children give of their best at all times. We need to be honest and open about the discussions that take place and seek support to get a better understanding when it is necessary to do so.
Readers, there are useful articles and videos available on this site:( https://www.cfchildren.org/what-is-social-emotional-learning/schools/).
More information is also available here: https://www.cfchildren.org/podcasts/
We are already having a fantastic school year. Help us to maintain this momentum.
Thank You for partnering with us.
Respectfully,
L. Watkis (Assistant Principal)

Schoolwide Bahavior

Parents,
Thank you for teaching scholars the importance of positive behavior away from home.
We appreciate the effort that you take to remind them daily of the following:
-Listen attentively to the teachers
-Wait your turn
-Respect all school rules
-Listen when someone is speaking.
Each homeroom is working to earn tiger paws toward the different end-of-month activities at school. Additionally, they earn individual class dojo points. Remind and encourage the value of hard work, consistency in demonstrating positive behaviors, and commitment to citizenship.
Thank you for all that you do to support the teaching-learning environment.
Your school needs your support.
L. Watkis (Assistant Principal)
