5th Grade Updates
|
Make sure you are checking agenda books each night! Students will be writing homework assignments there as well as important communication about upcoming dates for parents to know.
In math, students will be working on whole number multiplication and division as well as the decimal number system. Students are working to understand the inverse properties of multiplication and division to solve real-world problems. Students will also be working to understand decimal place value as an extension of whole number place value, where each place value to the left of another is ten times greater than the one to the right, and each value to the right is 1/10 of the place to its left.
In science, students will be studying the properties of matter. Students will investigate what causes matter to change from one state to another and the similarities and differences between the states.
In reading, students will be reading informational texts and answering questions using textual evidence. Students will be taken on a Journey (Unit 1’s theme) to Angel Island Immigration Station to learn about the immigrant experience of Chinese immigrants in the 1930s as we follow the path of a father and his 13 year-old son’s journey to open a restaurant in Wichita, Kansas. The essential question for this week is, “What motivates someone to move from a place that they call home.” To support your student at home, have a conversation with them about your personal family history or visit the Planet World museum in Washington, DC at 925 13th St NW.
These are this week's words for spelling lists. Students will be assigned a list after the pre-test on Monday. We are continuing with the suffixes -ic, -ive, and -ism.
List 1
historic
federalism
atomic
tourism
secretive
narrative
kinetic
realism
defensive
representative
List 2
interactive
legislative
progressive
competitive
exceptionalism
activism
altruism
organic
acrobatic
antiseptic
In social studies, we will be continuing with our first topic and learning about the first Americans. Our essential question for this unit is, “How does geography influence how people live?” We will also be spending some time in the Social Studies Skills Handbook at the beginning of the curriculum to work on essential skills like reading different types of maps and the fundamentals of social studies.

Second Grade Updates!
|
Hello Second Grade Parents!
Another incredible week down in second grade!
RELA
We are continuing unit one, “You are Here” in our curriculum. Our unit essential question is “How do different places affect us?” Our weekly question will focus on, “How can people improve their neighborhoods?” Students will explore this topic more through a variety of Realistic Fiction Texts. We will also focus on handwriting.
Science
We will continue learning about properties of matter. Students will be able to describe matter and distinguish between solids, liquids, and gases.
Social Studies
Students will continue learning about our community and country and how they fit in. Students are examining what a citizen is, how to be a good citizen, and what it means to be a citizen.
Health
In this month's issue, we are focusing on safety. Students are learning more about how to be safe in both their school community and home community. Students are also learning more about rules and laws, how to handle common emergencies, and about how they can help to keep their friends safe.
Math
We are continuing Topic 1. This topic involves fluently adding and subtracting within 20. Students are refreshing their skills on basic addition and subtraction in order to build their mental math abilities so that they can start solving problems quickly and accurately.
Updates and Reminders:
1. Please be sure to check your scholar's purple folder every night! Sign their calendar nightly in acknowledgement of daily behavior.
2. All second grade classes will have afternoon snack. Snacks should be healthful. Please be mindful of students with allergies and attempt to send allergy friendly snacks.
3. Students should bring a water bottle to school with them daily.
4. Homework is in full effect! Students should be completing 4 spelling assignments weekly in their spelling notebook AND 5 DreamBox lessons weekly. Remember, DreamBox is an application accessed through Clever. Participation in homework will be graded.
5. Many students are still missing their necessary school supplies! Please check to make sure you have sent in all requested school supplies. If anyone is able to donate composition notebooks or colored folders (red, yellow, green, blue, purple), we would be so appreciative!
Thank you for all of your support so far this year! We are thankful for every one of you!

i-Ready Test
|
Dear Parents,
CMIT south Elementary is pleased to inform you that students in Kindergarten through grade 5 will continue using i-Ready for Reading. i-Ready is an online program that will help your student’s teacher determine your student’s needs, personalize their learning, and monitor progress throughout the school year. The i-Ready platform consists of two parts: Diagnostic and Personalized Instruction.
The i-Ready Diagnostic Assessment will be administered between September 16, 2022 and October 3, 2022 to students in grades 1 through grade 5. Students in Kindergarten will take their first Diagnostic Assessment in January 2023.
The i-Ready Diagnostic is an adaptive assessment that adjusts questions based on your child’s responses. It is expected that your child will not be able to answer every question correctly. The i-Ready Diagnostic is untimed, but most students complete the assessment in 45-60 minutes.
The results of the i-Ready Diagnostic Assessment will be used by teachers and staff to implement and improve instructional practices and to set your child’s online learning path for i-Ready Personalized Instruction. The purpose of this assessment is an instructional tool for teachers and no grade will be assigned.
Please send our scholars to the school with fully charged Chromebook.
If you have any questions, please reach out to your child’s Reading Teachers or to the STC Mr. Metin.
Have a Restful Weekend.
Fatih Metin
Program Coordinator &
Testing Coordinator

Schoolwide Bahavior

Parents,
Thank you for teaching scholars the importance of positive behavior away from home.
We appreciate the effort that you take to remind them daily of the following:
-Listen attentively to the teachers
-Wait your turn
-Respect all school rules
-Listen when someone is speaking.
Each homeroom is working to earn tiger paws toward the different end-of-month activities at school. Additionally, they earn individual class dojo points. Remind and encourage the value of hard work, consistency in demonstrating positive behaviors, and commitment to citizenship.
Thank you for all that you do to support the teaching-learning environment.
Your school needs your support.
