Home School Connection
Support learning at home. Learning Space Find a space in your home that can be used every day for distance learning. If the space is shared, create a cardboard or cloth separation to minimize noise and distractions. Offer your child the chance to decorate this space to feel welcoming (draw a sign, bring a favorite pillow, etc.). Make sure the space includes essential learning materials. Ask teachers for help. Daily Schedule Understand what teachers expect from your child. Email, call, or text to clarify. Write a simple list of activities that your child needs to complete each day. Include breaks for snacks, physical activity, wiggles or stretches, and free-choice time. Younger children will need more breaks. Encourage your child to decorate the schedule and post it in their space. Revise to fit your family’s needs. Be flexible. Predictable Routine Start early when your child is rested. Review the daily schedule and make sure your child understands it (e.g., first you will…, then you can…). Help your child build independence (e.g., learn to prepare their own snack, troubleshoot computer problems). Let your child know when and how they can ask for help. Keep regular sleep times. Goals & Progress Together with your child, set behavioral expectations and review them daily. Set goals and timelines that your child can complete. It’s about progress, not perfection. Teach your child to use a timer to stay focused for a period of time. Start small! Mark daily progress (even on not-so-good days) with stickers, pennies, pebbles, etc. Use your child’s favorite activities as rewards for showing effort and progress. Managing Frustrations Use simple calming strategies: counting to 10, taking deep breaths, a short break. Help your child describe the problem and express their feelings (I feel…, when…). Together, come up with a potential solution and connect it to previously set expectations. Explain how the child’s behavior is linked to consequences. Set gentle and firm limits. Assume that everyone is trying their best. Be kind to yourself. Be patient with others. Ask teachers and others for help. Closeness & Connection Start each day with a brief joyful experience: a fun greeting, song, or dance. Create opportunities for your child to be helpful (e.g., household chores, cooking prep, reading to siblings). Each day, try to connect with your child without any distractions. Highlight positive experiences. If you have time, do a fun activity together that the child selects. Create opportunities for your child to share their worries, and provide reassurance. 5th Grade Week of 9/12 Updates
Back to School Night is this week on Wednesday! Be sure to join us virtually on zoom to meet your teachers and get to know the classroom rules, routines, and expectations. This is our weekly update for 5th grade where you can find information about what is going on in our classrooms in the upcoming week! Starting on Monday, students will have weekly spelling words. The word list is differentiated. Students will be assigned their list on Mondays after a pretest. Students who score 80% or higher automatically get list 2. All other students will receive list 1. Weekly spelling homework will be a norm going forward. It will be a choice board where students will have to choose and complete 3 activities by Friday using their spelling list words. This will be a virtual assignment. Students will also be given a weekly reading log assignment that will also be virtual. Student will be asked to fill out information about the book they read and choose/answer a comprehension question. In addition, students will be required to complete a specified amount of i-ready lessons. Any other work sent home is classwork that students were unable to complete during the school day. Spelling List 1 heroic dramatic organism deflective heroism artistic capitalism executive comic perspective Spelling List 2 historic federalism atomic tourism secretive narrative kinetic realism defensive representative Students will be reading informational texts by analyzing main ideas and details, developing knowledge about language to make connections between reading and writing, and using elements of narrative writing to write a personal narrative. In social studies, we will be starting off with our first topic and learning about the first Americans. Our essential question for this unit is, “How does geography influence how people live?” In math, students will continue working on converting decimals into fractions and place value as exponents. The first topic in science is properties of matter. Students will be expanding on their knowledge base built in K-4 by exploring various properties of objects and working on using descriptive words to compare and contrast a variety of objects and materials. We’re looking forward to a great year in 5th grade! Keep up the great work, tigers!!!! In Partnership,

Hi everyone! We hope you all had an amazing long weekend! Last week was wonderful getting to know our students and going over classroom procedures! This week, we will be picking up with our content areas and also beginning homework. Please use the 3rd grade google site to see all assignments for the week from each class. Students will not have homework every single night, but it is important to keep up with assignments throughout the quarter! We will review much of this during back to school night next week, Wednesday, September 14, so please join us then to discuss more! We hope to see you all there and we are so excited to be working with you and your children this year! Please make sure that you have accessed your child's homeroom teacher's Class Dojo page. This is where we will continue to post any important announcements and information. If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to the 3rd grade teachers and we will be happy to help! Also, please make sure students are bringing their charged chromebooks to school everyday as we will be using them in class. Second Grade Updates
Hello Second Grade Parents! Our team is enjoying every moment with your scholars and we have accomplished many things from getting to know each other, learning how to be second grade students, and taking all of our baseline tests! This week, we will begin getting into our curriculum and we have a lot of cool things to learn! RELA We will begin unit one, “You are Here” in our new curriculum. Our unit essential question will be “How do different places affect us?” Our weekly question will focus on, “What can we understand about a place when we look at it closely?” Students will explore this topic more through a variety of Realistic Fiction Texts. We will also focus on handwriting. Science We will begin our first science unit on properties of matter. Students will be able to describe matter and distinguish between solids, liquids, and gases. Social Studies Students will begin chapter one in social studies where they are learning more about our community and country and how they fit in. Students are examining what a citizen is, how to be a good citizen, and what it means to be a citizen. Health This month’s issue will focus on safety. Students will learn more about how to be safe in both their school community and home community. Students will also learn more about rules and laws, how to handle common emergencies, and about how they can help to keep their friends safe. Math We have started Topic 1, and will continue to work through this topic throughout the week. This topic involves fluently adding and subtracting within 20. Students will refresh their skills on basic addition and subtraction in order to build their mental math abilities so that they can start solving problems quickly and accurately. A topic letter came home to families to provide more information on how you can support your student at home. Updates and Reminders: 1. Please be sure to check your scholar's purple folder every night! Sign their calendar nightly in acknowledgement of daily behavior. 2. All second grade classes will have afternoon snack. Snacks should be healthful. Please be mindful of students with allergies and attempt to send allergy friendly snacks. 3. Students should bring a water bottle to school with them daily. 4. Homework will begin this week. Second grade teachers will send more information out on Monday. However, students will have weekly spelling homework AND 5 DreamBox lessons weekly. Participation in homework will be graded. Thank you for all of your support so far this year! We are thankful for every one of you!

Mrs. Jones' Corner
Happy Friday Tiger Family! We have brought week 2 to a close! Though it wa short, scholars worked hard to achieve all of our goals this week! In Math, we began establishing Place Value understanding to help us with expanded form comprehension. We will continue to use these skills next week as we discuss place value relationships and begin rounding multi-digit numbers. In Science, we've discovered energy! Scholars also conducted their first science experiment for the year, as pictured below. They were able to demonstrate their knowledge by measuring the energy of objects of different sizes. Next week in Science, we will look into how the height of an object impacts its' energy, collisions, and how energy is transferred between objects. Thank you again to all who contributed to ensure our experiment was possible. On Wednesday September 14, 2022 and Thursday September 15, 2022 scholars will be taking MAP Reading and Math. Please ensure your Tiger is well rest, has a fueling breakfast, and is equipped with a charged chromebook , not just for testing days, but daily. If you are in need of a replacement chromebook visit the following link to make a payment and receive a replacement. Chromebooks are vital for scholars. Because all students have been provided access to technology, and we are a STEM school, there will be assignments/activities that are only available online. If students are without their devices, be it broken or not charged, they are missing out on learning opportunities which will impact their grade. Do not hesitate to email me at lyoung@cmitsouthes.org if you have any questions or concerns. Please allow 48 business hours of response time for any form of communication. I look forward to having another amazing week.

Kindergarten Readiness Assessment
The State of Maryland the Kindergarten Readiness Assessment (KRA) to learn more about children’s early learning experiences that will provide information to parents and kindergarten teachers that can be used to help children learn and grow. The KRA will be used by kindergarten teachers to measure what children know and can do when entering Kindergarten in the early learning areas of social skills, language and literacy, cognitive development, and physical well-being and motor development. (This assessment will NOT determine whether a child can be enrolled in Kindergarten.) There are three ways for a child to show what he or she knows and is able to do: - Selecting the answer to a question (e.g., “Show me the block that is the largest of three.”) - Performing a requested task (e.g., retelling a short story) - Being observed by the teacher during the school day’s activities or collecting their work samples The Kindergarten teachers will begin assessing kindergarten readiness beginning on the first day of school through mid-October. It will help us to tailor instruction to the needs of each child. When the assessment is complete, teachers will have a report to share with families. The report will help families and teachers work as partners so that our children are successful in school. For more information, please visit R4K: Maryland’s Early Childhood Comprehensive Assessment System at https://pd.kready.org/105953
