NWEA Reading Fluency Test for kindergarteners, 1st Graders and 2nd Graders
Dear Parent/Guardian: Prince George’s County Public Schools (PGCPS) is pleased to inform you that students in grades K-2 will be using NWEA MAP Reading Fluency. This assessment has been chosen in accordance with Maryland Senate Bill 734, which requires a screening of every kindergarten, first, and second grade student to identify if the student is at risk for reading difficulties. NWEA MAP Reading Fluency is an online assessment that will help your student’s teacher determine your student’s phonological awareness, phonics and word recognition, picture vocabulary, and listening comprehension. The NWEA MAP Reading Fluency assessment will be administered between January 19 and February 4, 2022. NWEA MAP Reading Fluency is an adaptive assessment that adjusts questions based on your child’s responses. It is expected that your child will not be able to answer every question correctly. NWEA MAP Reading Fluency is untimed, but most students complete the assessment in 20 minutes. The results of the NWEA MAP Reading Fluency assessment will be used by teachers and staff to identify students who are at risk for reading difficulties and will provide reporting for teachers that will allow for individualized instruction. The purpose of this assessment is as an instructional tool for teachers and no grade will be assigned. Different Sections will have the test on different days between January 19 and February 4. If you have further questions, please reach out to the homeroom teacher.

Updates from the Art Room!
I wanted to show off some wonderful winter work made by our artists in K-2! Kindergarten and 1st graders listened to the book "Ish" by Peter Reynolds, discussed what it means that "beauty is in the eye of the beholder", then made their own snowmen...ish! The Kindergarteners worked with winter colored squares and markers. The 1st graded worked their fine motor skills by having to tear up the paper themselves to create their compositions! Second graders learned about the origins of origami and then, using a tutorial, worked their fine motor skills to create a folded paper penguin in their choice of color!

Stay happy, healthy, and creative! Miss James

Grade Level Greatness
3rd Grade Updates!
Hi everyone! We are finishing up our time of virtual learning and will be returning into the building very soon! If you have been an in-person learner this year, you should be returning to school in person on Tuesday, January 18! There is no school on Monday due to MLK day! This upcoming week, students are returning into the building and we would appreciate any possible donations of cleaning supplies such as wipes or hand sanitizer in order to best keep everyone safe! The second quarter will be ending soon so students should make sure they are all caught up with assignments on Canvas! Also, the STEM Fair project and research projects and papers were due and almost all of them are done being graded at this point. Please check Canvas for the rubrics and any grades and attached comments! Please use our Google Site as it has many helpful resources for you all! There is a weekly assignment breakdown that can help parents keep up with students' assignments, a grade level newsletter, and many other important resources. Here's the link to our google site: https://sites.google.com/pgcps.org/3rdgradeclasssite From your 3rd Grade Team! :)

4th Grader's CogAT Test
Dear Parent/Guardian: All 4th-grade students and selected 5th-grade students in Prince George’s County will be taking the Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT) between January 19 and January 27, 2022. The CogAT is a verbal and non-verbal measure of abstract thinking and reasoning ability. The CogAT can only be administered in person in the school building. Parents of virtual students who wish their students to take this test must have their students come into the school building to test. If you are a parent of a virtual student you wish to have tested, please contact the School Test Coordinator at your school by fmetin@cmitsouthes.org or by apavignano@cmitsouthes.org. Results of this test are only one factor used to identify students for the Talented and Gifted (TAG) Program. Other factors include student achievement, teacher ratings in academics, creativity, task commitment, and other data relevant to individual students. Please avoid appointments that may take your child out of school during this time period. Also, it will help your child perform best if he or she comes to school with a positive attitude, a good night’s rest, and a healthy breakfast. Results will be available in March 2022. Sincerely, Ronald Miller-Principal
