Be sure to send students to school with a fully charged device daily. Reading homework calendar for the month of October is available on Google Classroom. Reading: This week we read a biography about Mary Anning called “Rare Treasure” by Don Brown. Students practice the skill of referring to the text for details and monitoring their inner conversations. Next week we will begin to read a new story “Twins in Space.” We will be working on the skills of main idea, text structure, and context clues. Mrs. Jones' 4th Grade Math Corner!
Happy Friday Tigers & Parents! We have successfully made it through another beautiful week. Though it was a short one, students were still able to accomplish a lot. We have closed out Unit 1 where we focused on the structure of whole numbers. We examine place values, various representations of numbers, and multiple ways to solve properties of operations. The standards we've mastered during this unit include: 4.NBT.1, 4.NBT.2, 4.NBT.3, 4.NBT.4, and 4.MD.2 On Tuesday, we will begin Unit 2 where we will focus on whole number multiplication and our standards are: 4.OA.1, 4.OA.2 , 4.OA.3, 4.NBT.5, 4.MD.2, and 4.MD.3 Thank you to all who were able to schedule and attend our Parent-Teacher Conferences. If you missed the opportunity, no worries. I will be opening up time twice a week during my planning to speak with parents. That information will be shared in the week to come. Progress Report Grades have been posted. Please check SchoolMax for updated grades. Have a prosperous weekend! Rest & Recharge!

Second Grade Updates
Happy Long Weekend Second Grade Families! It’s that time of year again! Progress reports are finalized and will be available in SchoolMAX soon. If you haven’t scheduled a conference with the 2nd grade team and still need one, please reach out to teachers individually to review the data and talk about what’s going on in the classroom in regards to your student. Fitting 77 conferences into our schedule has been a challenge, but we are up to the task and we appreciate your patience! Graded work should be coming home fairly regularly, so please check your student’s backpack for their purple take-home folder. Book fair flyers have been sent home. Please review them carefully, as the book fair is cashless this year and the students will use their e-wallet to purchase from the fair. As always, thank you for your partnership and keep up the great work! Reading: This week in reading, our essential question is, “How do we care for animals?” Our phonics focus is the “long a” and the “silent e” sounds. Our listening comprehension story is a nonfiction story about people who work with animals for their job called, “All Kinds of Vets” which will give us a great opportunity to talk about the difference between fiction and nonfiction. Our close reading story is another nonfiction text called, “Lola and Tiva: An Unlikely Friendship” about a girl who cares for her pet rhino! This story will give us a great chance to compare and contrast taking care of a rhino and taking care of more common pets (like dogs and cats). Our grammar focus this week builds off of last week’s focus of sentence subjects (or the who) to cover the predicate (or the action/what) of a sentence. This week’s standards: CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RI.2.1 Ask and answer such questions as who, what, where, when, why, and how to demonstrate understanding of key details in a text. CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RI.2.2 Identify the main topic of a multiparagraph text as well as the focus of specific paragraphs within the text. CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.2.4 Determine or clarify the meaning of unknown and multiple-meaning words and phrases based on grade 2 reading and content, choosing flexibly from an array of strategies. Spelling words: another done water your into show now too move year Vocabulary Words: roams- moving around freely allowed- having permission to do something care- attention to keeping someone or something safe or healthy excited- having lots of energy or emotion needs- something that you must have safe- being free from harm or danger wandered- to walk around slowly and randomly wild- a place in nature where animals live Math: This week in Math we continued skip-counting dimes and pennies on a hundreds chart and on a number line to find out how many cents in all. We also began exploring arrays during Math Talk and discussed rows and columns. We had fun identifying arrays in our classroom and students have been encouraged to look for them in real life! Next week we will work with nickels and pennies to determine how we can use skip-counting by five to find how many in all. We will also learn about coin equivalencies- example: 5 pennies equals 1 dime. **Standards we are working on: 2.NBT.2Count within 1000; skip-count by 2s, 5s, 10s, and 100s. 2.MD.8 Solve word problems involving dollar bills, quarters, dimes, nickels, and pennies using the dollar and cent symbols appropriately. Example: If you have 2 dimes and 3 pennies, how many cents do you have? 2.OA.2 Fluently add and subtract within 20 using mental strategies. By the end of Grade 2 know from memory all sums of two one-digit numbers. ***Math Homework: Students should be working on math recommended skills for 15 minutes nightly. Science: This week in Science we learned about bodies of water and liquid vs solid. Our objective was: Students will recognize that there are patterns to where and what type of water is found on the Earth’s surface. We worked in the textbooks on pages 190 to 193. The assigned homework was IXL Science skills C1.Change-of-state diagrams:solid and liquid O.1 Water on Earth. Next week the objective will be: Students will obtain information to identify patterns about where water is found on Earth’s surface. We will create a project to display the various bodies of water that we live near. Students will need crayon, markers, or colored pencils, scissors, and a pencil. Standard: ESS2.C: The Roles of Water in Earth’sSurface Processes. Water is found in the ocean, rivers, lakes, and ponds. Water exists as solid ice and in liquid form. Social Studies: This week in Social Studies we learned about the Government. Our objective was: Students will define government and describe its purpose, explain the function of government and why it is formed. We worked in the textbook on pages 30 to 33. The assigned homework was IXL C1. Purpose or government, C2. Local Government, C3. State Government, and C4. Federal Government. We will review with an exit ticket on the Three Branches of Government. Next week our focus will be: Students will identify government leaders and their roles in a community, state, and nation. The closing activity for this lesson will be a narrative entitled “If I were President.” This activity will analyze the knowledge that students have about the Executive Office of the President and to see if they understand checks and balances. Standards: D2.Civ.5.K-2. explain what governments are and some of their functions. Health: This week in Health we learned about the functions of the human brain. Our objective was: Students will explore the major parts of the brain, how senses help the brain learn, and respect for different perspectives and patterns of thinking. We discovered how the senses help your brain learn. We practiced learning in different ways. Next week our objective will be: Students will use decision making steps to avoid unhealthy influences. Standard: State:1(a) - Mental & Emotional Health 7.0 - Self - Management
