Second Grade Updates
Greetings Second Grade Coin Counters! It’s crazy to think about, but we are already halfway through the first quarter! Our second grade students have been putting in the work Monday through Friday (and even on weekends!). The second grade team wants to applaud parents and caretakers for all of their hard work and excellent communication with us. This is a team effort and we couldn’t do it without you all, so thank you! Second grade scholars have been coming to school (both in person and virtually) with their thinking caps on and ready to go! Keep up the great work and make sure you look at the special announcements that were made on the 2nd grade Class Dojo Stories for our October special event! ***Schedule Alert***. There is no school on Monday 10/11 or Friday 10/15 next week for students. ***Schedule Alert*** Reading: This week in reading, we will be continuing last week’s standards and objectives because of the shortened schedule from last week with testing and the professional development days that students won’t be in the building. We will continue working with “Not Norman; A Goldfish Story” and will take a deeper dive (GET IT?!?! It’s a story about fish and we’re taking a deeper dive!!!!) into some of the text features and writing style of the author to dissect how she uses the pictures as well as the words to tell the whole story. We will also be reading “Finding Cal” in the whole group setting and for our first partnered reading session! Students will also begin meeting with me in small groups for targeted interventions based off of the testing data that we were able to collect over the past few weeks. Some groups will meet with me every day and others will meet with me 2-3 times a week based on identified needs and gaps that need to be bridged. We will not be getting new spelling or vocabulary words this upcoming week, but we will be taking some time on Tuesday to set up our spelling and vocabulary composition books where students will do all spelling homework going forward. The first day of each week, they will paste their words into their journals and copy definitions off of the board for warm up so that they have a copy to reference going forward. Vocabulary words: decide different friendship glance proper relationship stares trade Spelling words: grass trips crack still west mask clap plans milk Bell This week’s standards: RL.2.3- Describe how characters in a story respond to major events and challenges. RL.2.7- Use information gained from the illustrations and words in a print or digital text to demonstrate understanding of its characters, setting, or plot. L.2.4a- Use sentence-level context as a clue to the meaning of a word or phrase. Math Standards: 2.NBT.2Count within 1000; skip-count by 2s, 5s, 10s, and 100s. 2.MD.8 Solve word problems involving dollar bills, quarters, dimes, nickels, and pennies using the dollar and cent symbols appropriately. Example: If you have 2 dimes and 3 pennies, how many cents do you have? 2.OA.2 Fluently add and subtract within 20 using mental strategies. By the end of Grade 2 know from memory all sums of two one-digit numbers. We have practiced counting dimes and pennies. Now we will be moving on to counting nickels. Students will continue counting money using skip counting and counting on with hundred charts and number lines. Students will also reexamine groups of objects in arrays and how to write repeated addition equations. As graded work comes home, please be on the lookout for work that needs to be fixed. Anything with a check or check plus should be reviewed and returned for an improved score. If there is ever a question about make-up work please reach out. As always, please monitor SchoolMax for the most up-to-date information on grades. Social Studies: This week in Social Studies we learned about the Importance of rules in the community. The objective was that Students will identify rules and laws and describe their purpose in school. Scholars were given the task to complete a journal entry about how rules and laws help to keep them safe in school. In the textbook, we read pages 24 to 27, answered the questions about obeying laws and rules while in school. Next week the objective will be “Students will define government and describe its purpose. Explain the function of government and why it is formed.” We will read pages 30 to 33 and answer questions on page 33. Students will receive an exit ticket as well to analyze their knowledge of the Three Branches of Government. Standards: D2.Civ.1.K-2-Describe roles and responsibilities of people in authority. D2.Civ.3.K-2-Explain the need and purposes of rules in various settings inside and outside of school. Science: This week in Science we learned about Bodies of Water on the Earth’s surface. The objective was “Students who demonstrate understanding can: Explain that water can be found as a liquid or a solid on the surface of the Earth. Scholars read pages 186 to 189 and answered the questions on page 189. We watched a video on Oceans, Lakes, and Rivers via Generation Genius. Next week our objective will be “Students who demonstrate understanding can: Recognize that there are patterns to where and what type of water is found on the Earth’s surface. We will read pages 190 and 191 in the textbook. Students will play a Kahoot game to analyze their knowledge of content. Standards: 2-ESS2-3 Obtain information to identify where water is found on Earth and that it can be a solid or liquid. Health: This week in Health, Students learned about the function of the brain. The objective was: “Students will discover how senses help your brain learn. We will practice learning in different ways.” Students also learned about the functions of right and left hemispheres in the brain. This sparked a deep curiosity and class discussion to examine whether they were right brain or left brain learners. Next week will explore the major parts of the brain, how senses help the brain learn, and respect for different perspectives and patterns of thinking. In Partnership,

3rd Grade Updates!
Hello everyone! Happy Fall! We have successfully completed our first month in school and we are ready to move right along into October! We have parent - teacher conferences coming up on Monday, October 11. They will be VIRTUAL! We will post a Zoom link for parents to be able to use on Monday. The sign up sheet is full already for in person classes, so we are working with parents to schedule times for conferences on different dates and times! If you did not get to sign up and you still would like a conference, please message your teachers and we will find a time that works! We had two third grade classes at home quarantining this past week, but we are so excited that we are returning back to in person! We missed you all! There was asynchronous work posted for students while they were at home, so make sure students complete all the work from Canvas! Please make sure use our Google Site as it has many helpful links and resources such as schedules, more newsletters, important links, and a weekly assignment breakdown page! Here's the link to our google site: https://sites.google.com/pgcps.org/3rdgradeclasssite We can't wait to return back to normal learning in person for the classes that were at home, and we hope everyone continues to stay safe and healthy! Please let us know if you have any questions! From your 3rd Grade Team! :)

Technology Class
Dear CMIT Family, Just a friendly reminder! I want to let you know some important things: 1- Next week October 12 is the last day to accept the missing assignments. I will update the grades in School Max for Progress Report on October 12. Please check your child's missing assignment in School Max or Google Classroom. If your child has missing or low-grade assignments, help your child to redo the assignments or complete the missing assignments. 2- If your child did not join the Google Classroom, please help your child join the Google Classroom and complete the assignments. Missing assignments’ grades will be “0”. 3- If you have an account issue, you can contact Mr. Metin: fmetin@cmitsouthes.org If you have a Chromebook issue, you can contact Mr. Demirel: ademirel@clfmd.org 4- If your child knows how to access Google Classroom by using the username and password in Technology Class, they don’t need to bring their chrome book to the technology class, they can use our larger iMAC computers. Please talk to your child and practice how to use their username and password. 5- In Technology Class, after students finish their assignments and display good behavior they are allowed to play educational games to improve technology skills. This is an incentive that students enjoy a lot. Some of the educational games are abcya.com, Starfall, Prodigy, Nitrotype, and Minecraft. Log in is free but some games require an account to access them. I cannot help create an account or how to play the games. I can only help with their assignments. Students can play and practice at home. If students have missing or redo assignments and behavior issues I don’t allow them to play games. They need to complete the assignments and then they can go on the games. Please take the time to discuss the Technology Class procedures with your student and help them set up an account if necessary. If you have any questions, please reach out by Class Dojo messages. Thank you for your support Mrs. Ak
