Student Attendance Matters @ CMIT
CMIT Fabulous Parents, This is another reminder of the importance of daily attendance. This correlates with high achievement in all areas of school life. Please communicate with homeroom teachers the reasons for absences, so that these can also be properly coded. Your support in this area is of paramount importance. Here at CMIT we know the role regular attendance plays in your child's academic growth and development. Please support us in this area. Respectfully, Ms. Watkis Here are ten facts about school attendance (Taken from AttendanceWorks.org -visit to read more). 1. Absenteeism in the first month of school can predict poor attendance throughout the school year. Half the students who miss 2-4 days in September go on to miss nearly a month of school. 2. Over 8 million U.S. students miss nearly a month of school each year. 3. Absenteeism and its ill effects start early. One in 10 kindergarten and first grade students are chronically absent. 4. Poor attendance can influence whether children read proficiently by the end of third grade or be held back. 5. By 6th grade, chronic absence becomes a leading indicator that a student will drop out of high school. 6. Research shows that missing 10 percent of the school, or about 18 days in most school districts, negatively affects a student’s academic performance. That’s just two days a month and that’s known as chronic absence. 7. Students who live in communities with high levels of poverty are four times more likely to be chronically absent than others often for reasons beyond their control, such as unstable housing, unreliable transportation and a lack of access to health care. .. 8. When students improve their attendance rates, they improve their academic prospects and chances for graduating. 9. Attendance improves when schools engage students and parents in positive ways and when schools provide mentors for chronically absent students. 10. Most school districts and states don’t look at all the right data to improve school attendance. They track how many students show up every day and how many are skipping school without an excuse, but not how many are missing so many days in excused and unexcused absence that they are headed off track academically

Dear parents/guardians and students, We had another great week of dribbling, but with our feet this time ! We learned that we use the outside, inside and even bottom of our foot when dribbling and rolling the ball around. The younger grades tried some handling drills while the older grades compared and contrasted dribbling with hands vs. feet and what were the similarities and differences between them. ********* Parents ************** PLEASE remember to have a ball ready for your child the next few weeks as we are going back to hand dribbling and returning to foot dribbling the following week. It is a month long unit and the students need to be prepared in whatever location they find themselves. A soccer, kickball or basketball is fine for all the lessons on dribbling as they all work fine. Please stay away from miniature blow up bouncy balls and the plastic coated, glossy play ground balls as they are too lite and don't bounce in accordance with the real equipment used. Thanks !

Hello everyone, from the 2nd grade team! We hope you all had a great week this week! Students are continuing to learn a lot in each subject as we get into the second half of the 3rd quarter! In Reading, students are reading about Earth's forces and gravity as well as reading biographies for Women's History Month! We're also learning about verbs and we are working on our long vowels. In Social Studies, students are reading chapter 3 from our social studies books about maps and locations around the world! In Math, students are finishing up learning about subtraction within 100, and in science, students are learning about properties of matter! Make sure to be logging in minutes of reading to the READ-A-THON website this month! If you need any information on READ-A-THON, please send your teacher a message. March is also National Reading Month, so make sure students are reading as much as possible at home! If anyone has any questions about the school reopening plans, make sure to write them on the 2nd grade parents questions sheet! Thank you, and we are looking forward to another great week of school next week!! From your 2nd Grade Team! :)

Happy Friday! We are gaining momentum as we get closer to Spring Break and the starting of Hybrid Learning. Starting March 1, CMIT South Elm has started a read-a-thon. It will continue all month long. Students will be able to read during school but we encourage families to set up reading times at home too. This is a great way to practice reading and earn money for our school. As we get ready to re-enter the building, please practice with your child wearing a mask. In school we will begin to wear masks and encourage all students to practice wearing them. Also, please start the discussion with your children about staying 6 ft part, no touch ways to great friends, and washing hands. Just a reminder if your child is coming back to the school...please have all the supplies. Students will not be able to share supplies. 1 Large backpack 1 Chromebook or ipad fully charged at home 1 headphones with wire 1 Plastic pencil box to keep ALL supplies 5 Sharpened pencils 1 pencil sharpener with covering so shavings stay in container 1 24 pack crayons 1 4 pack of dry erase markers 1 eraser or sock Journals 1 personal hand sanitizer 1 Water bottle 1 Small pack of tissues 2-3 Reading books (switch out weekly) 1 Face mask 1 Change of clothes Thank you so much for all the support this school year!
