Updating your student information

This is a very busy time as we come to the close of the school year. It is very important for us to know which students in grades kindergarten through 4th grade are returning to CMIT Elementary next school year. Those students who are relocating or transferring to a different school will be given transfer forms on the last day of school. When registering your child in a new school, you will need to submit a withdraw packet to the new school along with your child’s final report card and your new proof of residence documents. If your child is absent or for some other reason does not bring home the transfer forms on the last day of school, please call the office at 240-573-7240.

If you decide to relocate during the summer, please e-mail Mr. Pavon, our school registrar, at lpavon@cmitelementary.com. Please allow him 24 hours to complete your withdraw packet.

Summer Activity Calendars and Packets
Dear Parents/Guardians:

The Department of Curriculum and Instruction has developed Summer Activity Calendars/Packets for the four core content areas - Science, Reading/English Language Arts, Social Studies, and Mathematics, along with Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate. Summer Activity Calendars/Packets (http://www.pgcps.org/summerpackets/) have been provided for students entering kindergarten through twelfth grade. The calendars/packets have daily activities for students during the months of June, July, and August 2017, not only to maintain skills learned, but also to enhance or learn new skills as students prepare for the new school year.

The Summer Activity Calendars/Packets are optional, but we do ask that you encourage your child or children to download the calendars/packets and complete the daily activities, assist your child or children with the activities, and initial when they have completed the daily activities per content area. Students may receive feedback from their teachers for completion of these activities, and teachers may provide further information regarding credit for the work done. Please check with your child's teacher in September 2017. Answer Keys for Math packets only will be posted the first week of August and will be available by clicking Summer Packets on the main PGCPS webpage.

If you have any questions or comments pertaining to the Summer Activity Calendars/Packets, please email summer. packets@pgcps.org.

Thank you for partnering with us in your child's education!

Kindergarten Promotion
Kindergarten students are being asked to wear all White Dresses (Girls) or White Button down long sleeve shirts with Khaki Pants (boys). The theme will be "Oh, to First Grade We Will Go."

As a reminder, the promotion will be held in the cafeteria on Wednesday, June 7 from 8:30-10:00am. Tickets will be sent home on Monday, June 5. Remember, tickets should include siblings that are in the building. This will act as their pass to leave class.

For those available to volunteer, we will need help with set up on Tuesday, June 6 after school. Please contact Ms. Santiago (jlsantiago@cmitelementary.org) if you will be able to assist! The more hands we have, the faster we'll be able to get everything ready! :D In addition, we will also need at least 3 parents to arrive early on June 7 and collect tickets at the door. Please let Ms. Santiago know if this is something you can assist with!

NO MORE HOMEWORK!

Highlights for this week...

Memory Book
Students will be reflecting on the year, and highlighting their favorite parts of Kindergarten!

Field Day
It will be a fun day filled with all of the skills that we've learned in P.E. this year! Students should wear RED shirts and comfortable bottoms/shoes. It's going to be an ACTIVE day!

Promotion
Promotion ceremony will be held on Wednesday, June 7 from 8:30-10:00am! Tickets will be sent home on Monday. Please be sure to give siblings in the building a ticket as well if you'd like them to attend. This will act as their pass from class, given teacher permission.

This summer, be sure to continue to read regularly! This is one simple way to avoid summer deficits when the school year starts again in September! Other easy ways to maintain learning is through having a writing journal, and having small projects. For ideas, check out Pinterest or this blog: http://amomwithalessonplan.com/20-summer-activities/

Lastly, Happy Early Birthday to Ms. Santiago! (June 10)

Our Time at Camp Schmidt

Camp Schmidt was truly an awesome experience for our 5th-Graders. It was an excellent way to end the school year of hard-work. Students were able to model perseverance and sportsmanship as they learned and participated in various hands-on activities. Well done scholars and for being on your best behaviors. Many thanks to our (4) teachers and (10) parent chaperones for the giving of their time. The fun and safety were possible because of YOU!

Are All Those 'Fidget Spinners' Really Helping Kids?
Straight from the desk of the National Association of Special Education Teachers:
Fidget spinners may be the latest must-have kids' toy, but claims that the gizmos help students pay attention aren't backed by science, experts say. Some retailers market the devices as a way to help kids with anxiety, autism or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) keep themselves calm and focused in the classroom. However, there have been no studies showing that fidget spinners benefit kids struggling to stay still, said Chicago psychiatrist Dr. Louis Kraus.

"To the best of my knowledge, there's no science behind what they're advertising," said Kraus, chief of child and adolescent psychiatry for the Rush University Medical Center. "Without any research to show it's of benefit, I think it's wrong for them to advertise these things as helpful," he said.

The claims likely are based on small-scale studies that show kids with ADHD pay better attention if they are allowed to fidget, said Dr. Matthew Lorber, a child and adolescent psychiatrist at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City. "They actually perform better because it indirectly forces the brain to work harder to focus on the task at hand," Lorber said.

But the lead researcher behind one ADHD/fidgeting study says fidget spinners probably are too interesting and fun to be much help in classrooms. Fidgeting can help kids pay attention, said Julie Schweitzer, a professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at the MIND Institute of the University of California, Davis. However, "school work is probably a lot less interesting than playing with the toy," Schweitzer said. "You're looking at competing activities here. It seems to me that it would be more distractive than helpful."
