Teacher Appreciation
Thank you to all the parents, community members, and staff that put a lot of effort into making sure that our teachers were appreciated. As we walked the halls and into classes teachers faces were beaming with gratitude and they left daily like it was their birthday with gifts and smiles.

I personally want to say thank you to each and every teacher and teacher at home that works with your scholars and tomorrows world leaders. As a team we are a force to be reckoned with and our scholars know it.

Thank you for all that you do and continue to do. Words can not express the happiness felt this week by all of the staff.

Homework
This week we have kicked off sight word notebooks! Sight word notebooks will be the homework task for the remainder of the school year. Students will be given 10 words each week and be asked to follow the directions in their notebook. This includes writing it, building it by cutting and pasting, and writing sentences. See the picture above for an example. The ten words will be due on Friday! The words for this week as as follows: I, am, little, to, a, have, is, the, we, my. Sight Word Notebooks can stay home until Friday.

Promotion
Thank you to all the parents that completed the promotion survey. Based on the responses, Kindergarten students are being asked to wear all White Dresses (Girls) or White Button down long sleeve shirts with Khaki Pants (boys). The theme will be "Oh, to First Grade We Will Go."

As a reminder, the promotion will be held in the cafeteria on Wednesday, June 7 from 8:30-10:00am. Tickets will be sent home on Monday, June 5 based on the survey responses. Remember, tickets should include siblings that are in the building. This will act as their pass to leave class. If you need to make changes to your ticket count, please contact Ms. Santiago at jlsantiago@cmitelementary.org and we will do our best to accommodate.

This week in Kindergarten...
English Language Arts
We will read the story "On the Move." It is about how to get to different places around the world! This is an informational text where students will be looking at actual transportation in different parts of the world. We will also be reading words having the beginning /v/ and /w/.

Mathematics
We are learning about money! We will identify different coins and their worth. Additionally, we will be counting money and closing out with determining if we have enough money to make purchases!
What you can do at home: take out your change and encourage your scholar to identify the coins and even try counting how much money there is! (Utilize their knowledge of counting by 5's and 10's for nickels and dimes.)

Science
We will continue observing the life cycle of a butterfly in real time! Students will watch as our classroom caterpillars go through the metamorphosis stages to become a butterfly.
Additionally, our visitors have arrived! Surprise! They are baby chicks and eggs! We will be observing the changes of both the egg and the baby chicks over the next month, until the egg hatches.

High Frequency Words
Here are our sight words we have learned so far. Remember to practice reading and writing these words regularly! (When reading at home, if you see these words, have your child point it out!) All of the words we will learn this year are available on our grade level website under "Sight Words."

I, am, little, to, a, have, is, the, we, my, like, he, for, me, with, she, see, look, they, you, of, are, that, do, one, two, three, four, five, here, go, from, yellow, blue, green, what, said, was, where, come

REMINDERS
- Homework is due on FRIDAY each week. Remember to bring sight word journals every Friday. Homework that is not submitted by the due date will be given a ZERO.
- Please read regularly! Remember that just 20 minutes a day can boost your child's reading levels! Reading logs are due at the end of the month and will be given a zero if blank or missing from your child's folder.
- Please remember to send an extra pair of uniform clothes to keep in your child's cubbie at school in the event of accidents or spills.

If you have not done so already, PLEASE SEND IN HEADPHONES WITH YOUR SCHOLAR ON MONDAY. We will keep them until third grade has completed PARCC testing.

How Do Fidget Spinners Help With ADHD?
Hot off the press! What is all the fuss about with the new "fidget spinners"?

Fidget spinners, small gadgets with a moveable middle that allows it to spin, have become the latest craze in the trendy toy market. You play with the spinner by spinning it in your hand, or watching it spin on the floor. According to Time, the purpose of the spinner is to relieve other fidgeting and allow the user to focus better. As Time noted, fidget spinners are intended to stimulate the part of the mind that gets bored, thus, allowing other parts of the brain to focus.

There is a downside to these fidgets, however. They can often be noisy, and contrary to their intended purpose, distracting. Teachers have noted that children often focus on the spinner itself, rather than allowing the spinner to increase their focus elsewhere, according to USA Today. Many schools have decided to ban fidget spinners, Time mentioned, because of the mania they induce due to their current popularity. If your child has ADHD, a fidget spinner may not be the best fidget toy option for school, but, it could help them boost attention and focus in other areas of their lives.
