April 27th was "Take Your Child to Work Day"
This year's "Take Your Child to Work Day" theme was "Education leads to future career paths."

Our staff member's sons and daughters wrote about how their education was going to lead to their own personal career goals, what education meant to them, and what they thought a career was.

It was a day filled with role reversals. The children had the opportunity to step into their parents shoes in the world of education.

This week in Kindergarten...
English Language Arts
We will read the story "The Little Engine that Could." It is the classic story of a little blue engine who was able to complete a mission that others couldn't or refused! We will be discussing retelling a story in sequence. We will also be reading words having the medial U sound.

Mathematics
We are learning about money! We will identify different coins and their worth. Additionally, we will be counting money and closing out with determining if we have enough money to make purchases!
What you can do at home: take out your change and encourage your scholar to identify the coins and even try counting how much money there is! (Utilize their knowledge of counting by 5's and 10's for nickels and dimes.)

Science
We will be observing the life cycle of a butterfly in real time! Students will watch as our classroom caterpillars go through the metamorphosis stages to become a butterfly.
Towards the end of the week, we will be receiving our special visitors who will be staying with us for a month! Hint: They incubate in an egg! ;) Once our visistors arrive, scholars will spend each day observing and recording their observations. Scholars will also have the opportunity to hold and care for these visitors!

High Frequency Words
Here are our sight words we have learned so far. Remember to practice reading and writing these words regularly! (When reading at home, if you see these words, have your child point it out!) All of the words we will learn this year are available on our grade level website under "Sight Words."

I, am, little, to, a, have, is, the, we, my, like, he, for, me, with, she, see, look, they, you, of, are, that, do, one, two, three, four, five, here, go, from, yellow, blue, green, what, said, was

REMINDERS
- Homework is due on FRIDAY each week. Remember to look for their new homework packet on Fridays. Homework that is not submitted by the due date will be given a ZERO.
- Please read regularly! Remember that just 20 minutes a day can boost your child's reading levels! Reading logs are due at the end of the month and will be given a zero if blank or missing from your child's folder.

Spring is in the Air!
Parents we are in need of your assistance! In the upcoming weeks, it is imperative that your scholar arrives to school on time. PARCC testing will begin promptly at 8:30. Your scholar should arrive to school on time, they should be well rested, and they should eat a healthy breakfast. (The cafeteria will not serve breakfast after 7:55.) We will keep them until third grade has completed PARCC testing.

In Math students are practicing for the PARCC test, as well as reviewing elapsed time, area, and fractions.

Test Taking Tips for Scholars
Dear Parents,
Test Taking Tips for Scholars
-Skim the whole test before you begin to determine how many questions there are on each section. Then budget your time accordingly so that you have enough time on the questions that might require more time to complete.

• Listen closely to the teacher’s instructions.
• Read any written instructions very carefully. Never assume that you know what they say.
• Answer every question. Unless there is a penalty for wrong answers, it can’t hurt to guess.
• Identify key words and highlight or write them down them. This will help you focus on the most important aspects of the question.
• Rephrase difficult questions. It may help you to understand a question if you rewrite it in your own words, but be careful not to change the meaning of the question.
• Use all of the time that you are given. If you finish early, use that time to go over your answers.
• Read each question carefully. Many wrong responses occur because students fail to read the entire question. Often, wrong responses are written with that in mind.
• Try to come up with the answer on your own before reading the possible answers. Then check to see if your response is among the possible answers.
• Eliminate any answers that you know are wrong.
• Read all choices before choosing your final answer.
• Don’t change your initial answer unless you have a very good reason. Studies suggest that most of the time, your first choice is correct.
• Don’t get stuck on one question. Skip the question, mark it with an “X,” and come back to it later. Be sure to leave that line un-bubbled on your answer sheet until you come back to it.
• Adjust the font if your eyes get tired.
• Keep a positive attitude throughout the whole test, and try to stay calm. If you start to feel nervous, take a few deep breaths to relax.

Parents-Please do the following:-

• Make sure your children have eaten well on test days. Studies suggest that good nutrition is related to improved attention and concentration.
• Help your children by encouraging a good night’s rest before exams. Children who are tired will have difficulty focusing on their work.
• Make the morning of test days pleasant. Stress will impair
your children’s ability to perform their best.
• Remind your children to dress comfortably, perhaps in layers, so that they are able to adjust to the temperature in the room.
• Ensure that your children make it to school on-time so that they do not miss any instructions and are allowed ample time to settle in and relax before the test begins.

Phonics works! Is sounding words the best way to teach reading?

There has been intense debates concerning how children should be taught to read. Researchers from Royal Holloway, University of London and the MRC Cognition and Brain Sciences Unit tested whether learning to read by sounding out words is more effective than focusing on whole-word meanings. In order to assess the effectiveness of using phonics the researchers trained adults to read in a new language, printed in unfamiliar symbols, and then measured their learning with reading tests and brain scans.

Professor Kathy Rastle, from the Department of Psychology at Royal Holloway said, "The results were striking; people who had focused on the meanings of the new words were much less accurate in reading aloud and comprehension than those who had used phonics, and our MRI scans revealed that their brains had to work harder to decipher what they were reading."

Keep calm and sound it out scholars!!

Award Winning Artists
Wow! What an amazing night we had on Wednesday the 27th. PGCPS had the awards reception for the juried show. Let me put this in perspective. 208 PGCPS schools were represented at the art show last month each school displayed 10-15 works of art and digital submissions were also accepted. From all of that art (about 2,000-3,000 works of art) about 40 works of art from elementary schools were accepted. CMIT Elementary represented 4 of those. All 4 scholars came to receive their awards. Not only that but one scholar received first place!

It is with great joy that I present to you:
Josephine Davis (1st Grade, front)
Cassidy Salisbury (2nd Grade, far right)
Genesis Edwards (5th Grade, center)
Last but not least,
Laila Kuyateh (4th Grade, far left behind Josephine)

Congratulations scholars!

You can stop by and see the art at The Shops at Iverson at:
3737 Branch Ave #203, Temple Hills, MD 20748
The art exhibit will be up until May 7th. The exhibit is in a store on the upper floor by Roses.

To the parents, thank you so much for helping us represent our school so well! You are all amazing and appreciated!
