Jump For Youth
Jump For Youth brought two Fun and Fitness events to CMIT ELEMENTARY. Their professional instructors held BASKETBALL and CHEERLEADING clinics. At the basketball clinic they taught the students, skills and fundamentals, and had them apply them in a controlled game setting. At the cheer clinic students Learned skills, fundamentals and routines. These clinics are always a wonderful experience for the kids involved, filled with so much fun, it certainly didn't feel like ‘working out’.

Please check them out at www.JumpForYouthCamps.com.

We look forward to working with them again.

K-Kids - Honor Flight
As the weather warms up, Honor Flight is starting up again! For those that did not get to participate in the Fall, Honor Flight is a program for Veterans (mostly from WWII) where they have the opportunity to visit our nation's monuments that pay tribute to the services and sacrifices they made to our country. For many Veterans, this provides much needed closure - where they are able to also recognize their fallen friends and family. For more information check out: https://www.honorflight.org/. We spend a small part of the morning at the airport, welcoming them to the DMV and thanking them for their service!

We have TWO opportunities to participate in The Honor Flight at BWI Airport! The Kiwanis Club will be there on April 15 and May 6. We meet as early as 7:00am to receive our Gate Access Passes and go through security. The flight arrives at 8:10am. There is also another flight at 9:55AM if you would like to stay for that as well.

If you would like to participate, please send me the following information for yourself and your child(ren) by April 7 for April 15 and April 28 for May 6 so that I can request your Gate Access Pass (GAP):

-First Name
-Middle Initial
-Last Name
-Date of Birth (mm/dd/yyyy)
-Gender

All ages are welcome! Anyone 18 and over is required to bring a government-issued photo ID. Please park in the hourly garage and bring your parking ticket with you to be validated. You must turn in your parking ticket 45 minutes prior to the flight time (7:25AM), but the earlier you arrive, the better! We meet inside Door 7 on the main level of BWI (this is the level where the ticketing counters are), closer to Security Gate C. You will see a group of volunteers for Honor Flight wearing neon yellow shirts. We will meet there at 7:25AM at the latest, collect our Gate Access Passes, and then go through the employee line of security together. From there we find our flight and wait for the veterans to arrive!

NOTE: The last day for clubs will be May 19. The following is a list of our remaining meeting dates!
April 11 - Bring in posters, markers, etc. to create posters to Earth Day.
April 25 - Bring in an old T-shirt to make into a dog toy to donate to a local animal shelter! (See sample here: http://www.withmycamera.com/2012/03/getting-crafty-with-pinterest.html )
May 9 - FINAL meeting! Bring ideas for projects for next year! :D

Welcome to spring and all that it brings!

To become successful, one must set and maintain high standards
Parents,
Please help our scholars to demonstrate positive work habits in preparation for PARCC and for college. With this in mind they should be doing the following:-
1. Reading at home. Homework alone is not sufficient. Our scholars should be reading each and every night.
2. Studying and practicing those concepts that require more of our time-such as multiplication tables, parts of speech, math formulas, science formulas, and vocabulary words in all content areas.
3. Going to bed on time-getting enough sleep will ensure that students come to school relaxed and ready to learn.
4. Practicing self-control in all that they do-this includes showing respect for self and others.
5. Remind all students to celebrate similarities and value diversity.

Thanks for all you do to support teaching and learning.

Counselors Corner
Safety Guidance Lessons per PGCPS
Dear Parents,

Prince George’s County Public Schools’ strategic plan promotes academic achievement for all students. In order for our students to learn, we recognize that safe and supportive environments must exist. While many strategies are implemented daily to ensure our students’ safety, we acknowledge the value of providing educational opportunities for our students to learn “personal safety”. Through classroom counseling lessons, your professional school counselor can assist your child in learning:
• Differences between appropriate and inappropriate physical contact
• Personal body safety rules and when to use them
• How to identify trusted adults to whom they can report when they feel unsafe

In accordance to the PGCPS Board of Education Policy #0126, all schools are required to present personal safety lessons to our students. Implementing an effective curriculum on personal safety for children can raise our students’ awareness of abuse, increase disclosure when abuse has occurred and serve as a preventative measure in the future.

This letter is to inform you that your child’s school counselor (Mrs. Green) will begin implementing age-appropriate personal safety lessons with students during the second semester of the 2016-2017 school year, starting in April 2017 Parents/Guardians are more than welcome to preview the lessons prior to the curriculum’s implementation by requesting to do so. Your School Counselor will let you know in advance the dates s/he will be with your student in the classroom for these specific lessons/topics.
In doing so, you can re-enforce these tools for personal safety with your child. We will lead the way to stop the cycle of child abuse in Prince George’s County.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact your child’s professional school counselor at 240-573-7240, or email her at writchie@cmitelementary.org.

Sincerely,
-PGCPS
-Office of Professional School Counseling

Graciously,
Your School Counselor

Sound Detective
Hello families!

This week some of our classes talked about the many roles the letter "Y" can have. We focused on "Y" being a vowel and stealing the sounds of "E" and "I" and we became sound detectives to find that sneaky "Y"! To practice with your scholars at home, play a scavenger hunt with a newspaper or magazine article. See if your scholars can find words where "Y" plays the role of a vowel and says "E" like baby or "I" like sky.

Have fun reading scholars!!
