Martin Luther King Jr. Day is not a day off. Its a day of service.
The Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service is a way to transform Dr. King’s life and teachings into community service that helps empower and strengthen local communities. Research tools and resources for organizations and individuals to become engaged in service activities to honor Martin Luther King Jr. on the federal holiday. Please share with us, CMIT Elementary, what activities and opportunities you can get involved.

WHY IS THE MLK DAY OF SERVICE?

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. once said, "Life's most persistent and urgent question is: 'What are you doing for others?'"

Each year, Americans across the country answer that question by coming together on the King Holiday to serve their neighbors and communities.

THE EARTH DOME
This week, Mobile Ed Productions brought The Earth Dome to CMIT Elementary which is one of the newest in educational technology! The Earth Dome is a gigantic inflatable earth balloon standing 19-feet high and 22-feet in diameter. It's made of 24 huge panels silkscreened with photographs shot from satellites of the surface of the world on cloud free days. It has been used extensively across the United States to educate students about geography as well as environmental issues.

The students had a presentation both outside as well as inside the balloon. They saw and got a better understanding of the scale of concepts such as continents, time zones, latitude, longitude, and more! Even major cities in comparison to the total earth were recognized. These topics were presented to each class at the appropriate grade level. Although, the visit to The Earth Dome was just only a 30-minute assembly, seeing and understanding the Earth as it appears from space, as opposed to painted globes or drawings, was an experience not soon forgotten.

Thank you PTO for providing this experience.

December Students of the Month
The students of the month for December were recognized on Friday, January 13th. They experienced a "Fitness Boot Camp" with Mr. Hatcher. There was rock wall climbing, shooting baskets, flexibility challenges on the mats, fitness games such as fruit basket and sharks and minnows. Granola bars and a sport drink were served to refuel and keep our scholars hydrated.

Way to go scholars. Looks like they had fun!

Public Charter School Lottery Timeline
Opens November 01, 2016 - Closes January 27, 2017 at 5:00 p.m.

The deadline to apply to the PGCPS Charter School Lottery for the 2017-2018 school year is fast approaching. All Prince Georges County families can apply to a public charter school, as there are no attendance boundaries assigned to charter schools. Interested families must complete an online lottery application by the deadline for each child they wish to enroll.

PGCPS gives lottery preference to new students who already have a sibling in the school. Siblings must live in the same household, be assigned to the same household in school max, have the same responsible parent/guardian, and both siblings must be enrolled at the same charter school for the 2017-2018 school year. Families must submit a valid lottery application by the deadline to be eligible for sibling preference. Sibling preference is based on seat availability and is never a guarantee.

To submit a PGCPS Charter Lottery application click here: http://lottery.pgcps.org/.

For more information on the PGCPS Charter Lottery click here: http://www1.pgcps.org/charters/.

MESA/CLUB
Students should bring in their $10 club fee as soon as possible. It is time to start gathering more supplies. Students should bring in a personal snack on club days. So far we have decided on groups for the different competitions. We have started our bridge design for our big competition. We have started creating our scratch game. We are very excited about this opportunity. Students must be on their best behavior. We will have a few new students joining us for third quarter. Students must be on their best behavior or they will be suspended from club. First behavior violation gets a warning. The second gets parent contact and one week suspension from club. The third incident will result in removal from the club. Thank you for your support.

It is a short week! Remember there will be no school on Monday 1/16 and Friday 1/20! (Homework will be due on 1/19, we apologize for the typos on the cover page this week!)

Remember, MAP Testing begins on 1/17. Additionally, students are completing the mid-year Literacy Assessment. Please take time to practice reading sight words! (List information below.) We are certain students have made fantastic growths over the last 4 months, and can't wait to see just how much!

This week in Kindergarten...
Martin Luther King, Jr.
In honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, we will be discussing Dr. King and his ideology of treating everyone with respect and fairness. We will discuss his contributions to the Civil Rights Movement and how he has shaped the world we live in today.

English Language Arts
We will continue to read the story "Farfallina and Marcel." It is a story about two friends and how their friendship evolves over time. We will be discussing plot and working with initial and final /f/.

Mathematics
We are SUBTRACTING to five! Students will be learning how to take away and find what is left. We will be learning the minus sign and reviewing the equal sign as well!

Science
Students will be learning about non-living things! They will identify characteristics of living thing and how to use that to identify non-living things.

High Frequency Words
Here are our sight words we have learned so far. Remember to practice reading and writing these words regularly! (When reading at home, if you see these words, have your child point it out!) All of the words we will learn this year are available on our grade level website under "Sight Words."

I, am, little, to, a, have, is, the, we, my, like, he, for, me, with, she, see, look

REMINDERS
- Homework is due on FRIDAY each week. Remember to look for their new homework packet on Fridays. Homework that is not submitted by the due date will be given a ZERO.
- Please read regularly! Remember that just 20 minutes a day can boost your child's reading levels!
- As the weather gets colder, remember that we still go outside for recess when the weather is above 32 degrees Fahrenheit. Please ensure that your child is dressed appropriately!
- If you would like to chaperone any future field trips, you must have a fingerprint background check. This can be obtained from the Fingerprint office at the county building 14201 School Lane, Upper Marlboro, MD Monday-Friday from 8:00am-3:45pm. For more information or to contact the fingerprinting office, please look at the fingerprint office website: http://www1.pgcps.org/fingerprinting/
- Please remember to send an extra pair of uniform clothes to keep in your child's cubbie at school in the event of accidents or spills.
- Uniform is enforced daily, including uninterrupted black shoes. Please go to http://cmitelementary.org/uniform-policy/ for more information.
